I think this is an excellent idea for rare and highly prized species. I wish I'd thought of it first. [ 14. February 2005, 05:28: Message edited by: Puck ]

    Extraction Chems...

Vodka costs at least $90/litre of pure ethanol (sold as 40% ethanol by volume). Keep this in mind. As for bad side effects of post-extraction dilution in 3 to 2 proportions of water to pure ethanol, it is the same as vodka with the added kick of thujone. Warning: thujone can cause CNS damage. This being said, absinthe is still being sold. If you wish to counter the bitter taste you should expect, add lemon and salt, or lemon and sugar. [ 08. February 2005, 20:03: Message edited by: Puck ]

    Ethnobotanic Cultural Survey

I will be posting a more detailed survey this week. The first survey was basically a 'state of the nation' style survey. This week we get down to the brass tacks. Hope you will all participate.

I like the 'universal noise' idea - you've just given me an idea for another project I've been considering.

Did this experiment myself. Be warned. Digital life can exist. I proved it. Anyone that wants the code, PM me. [ 07. February 2005, 19:33: Message edited by: Puck ]

    Extraction Chems...

I have a copper still head of exceptional design. 98% ethanol is very easy to achieve if you have the right equipment and use the right method. Anyone interested in this PM me. It costs about about $24 to make 5 litres. Methylated Spirits contains methanol. If you don't intent to drink the stuff I suppose that is fine. Or you could distil the methanol out of the spirits but I would be worried that not all the methanol would come out of solution. There are undoubtedly other undesirable additives so you would then have to follow this up by then distilling out the ethanol. Note, before you start, you should dilute the spirits in 2 parts of water to 1 part spirits. The boiling point of methanol of 65C and ethanol is 78C (with water at 100C of course). It might be cheaper to use methylated spirits than to ferment sugar to make an ethanol wash. But, I will repeat, it is very easy to achieve 98% ethanol if you have the right equipment, legalities aside.
