regular patrolling and manual removal of pests from your garden is the best
A 3/4 enclosed shade house with spiders set up over the top and geckos living inside is the best natural eco-habitat ive ever created for protecting my plants EVER!
only thing left in there is these little lady bug like flying insects, that don't seem to be doing any damage to my garden whatsoever as it is booming, and im reluctant to remove them anyway just in case they are the staple for the geckos and / or spiders
If all else fails
Dipel
or Sucess
or Neem
All available from Bunnings

I had the 'unexpected' pleasure of sampling this wonderful plant while I was cruising home from NZ South Island 2 years ago. We stopped in at 'Mystery' island, the most southern island in Vanuatu, where apparently their 'kava' is amongst the strongest in the world. Me being the skeptic i am was cynical about whether i should pay $5 for a bowl of muddy water...best $5 i ever spent..It came on as the sign said...a cross between marijuana and alcohol....what they failed to tell me is that my lips and face would fuzz like cocaine upon ingestion. If you ask me...its like 3 drugs in one...
which if you ask me...is good bang for your buck...I had a pretty crook gut for a couple of days after, but i account that to the fact i ended up "befriending" a bunch of the locals and drinking several bowls of their "paste" rather than the diluted 'liquid' they serve tourists(they also tried and offered to give me a live plant that they wanted me to "grow in my country" however i'm sure P&O cruises would not have appreciated me bringing a scheduled plant back on their vessel or into my country.). (Ingognito...are you talking about Mr T by any chance?)
If anyone is growing this bad boy im on the Gold Coast Sth East QLD and have an assortment of goodies i would be willing to trade for a rooted cutting of this!

purchased leaves are often refridgerated, or more generally upon transportation to or from 3rd world nations, occasionally doused with water and wrapped in bannana leaves to prevent moisture evaporation.
Not sure how many days it stays good for....
I have also discovered that the fresh 'tips' seem to be a lot more potent. Maybe due to the softness, not as much mastication is necessary for the release of the cathinoine and this is why i see increased results with tips (narrow leaf is best too guys for taste and potency i have found...red almost as potent...but very soapy taste
Narrow leaf after a few goes is like NOM NOM NOM
Salvia salvation needed!

100% success rate on plain ol'tap-water striking..
once little roots appear plant in rich organic soil / perlite 50/50 mix pretty much
until nicely rooted then transplant into rich mulched organic soil
grow quicker if exposed to sun, but be prepared to keep moist through dry hot summers to stop excessive wilting and sunburn which they are notorious for
otherwise best location is a misted shade house, with covers/humi-cribs over them in winter to prevent frost damage
this is all the Wasson/Hoffman syn Bunnell strain i am referring too, not that i assume the other main strain 'Blosser' is any different in its growing conditions. Just meant to taste better. Thus why it is also named the Palatable strain.
(Luna strain however is much rounder and stubbier in leaf growth than the other 2 commercial strains). Luna is a cultivar strain from the Wasson-Hoffman, unlike most of the other 'proposed' strains, most of which were collected from the same geographical location as the first 2 strains all those years ago, indicating strongly, due to the lack of chemical and growth differences amongst strains that it is highly probable that many of these are the exact same plant.
