  1. In regards to those amphetamine comments and students, there's a mass market for that at universities. Even people who are anti drug would take it because they thought it was all good because it was made by a pharmaceutical company in a clean lab. I pumped out many assignments at the last minute with the help of dex but felt fucking terrible afterwards and got horrid headaches/migraines.

Even militaries around the world still use it. If I remember correctly then American pilots are given the option of using it for missions longer than 10 hours and the Brits use it too. I ripped this from Wikipedia:

"The U.S. Air Force uses dextroamphetamine as one of its "go pills", given to pilots on long missions to help them remain focused and alert.[38][39][40][41] The Tarnak Farm incident was linked by media reports to the use of this drug on long term fatigued pilots. A military tribunal did not accept this explanation, citing the lack of similar incidents. Newer stimulant medications or awakeness promoting agents with fewer side effects, such as modafinil are being investigated and sometimes issued for this reason.[38] During the Vietnam War, Special Units of the US Military, such as MACV-SOG, were issued dextroamphetamine tablets. Due to the threat of misuse, these tablets were given to the Commanding Officer of the unit, and given out when needed.[42]"

  2. Get yourself a pair of these. I have had a pair for years and I bought my friends some as gifts as hearing damage is permanent. http://www.hearos.com/products/high-fidelity

They are re-useable noise attenuating earplugs. You still hear the same quality of music when you go to gigs, however, it will just not be as loud. Normal earplugs will just muffle the sound so don't use them. If you live in Perth then you can get them at Kosmic Sound in Osborne Park plus it seems that you can get them from Kosmic Sound online so they should ship interstate. http://www.kosmic.com.au/Guitars/HEAROS/1889?Hearos+High+Fidelity+Ear+Plugs+

$30 and they'll totally last you for years. Alternatively, you can go to http://www.westernhearing.com.au/ and get yourself a custom pair made but the'll set you back at least $300 so it might only be worth it if you are constantly at gigs or if you're a sound engineer or something.

  3. If you can't watch it then just download it. Go use isohunt or The Pirate Bay. If you type in 'National Geographic' then you'll find HEAPS of results for documentaries. If you are paranoid about being caught downloading stuff then use Peer Guardian and don't download the latest release movies unless you are using a private torrent.

If it's on SBS or ABC then you will be able to watch it online.

  4. If you want ready made good quality agar then go to http://www.mycosupply.com and buy yourself some potato dextrose agar or malt extract agar. It's good quality and it saves you the hassle of boiling potatoes and making your own mix etc.

They also have some other cool stuff for your agar work like metal inoculation loops and a mushroom cloning kit.

  5. www.amazon.com has the best price for All American products, however, the company will only ship up to a certain weight/dimension to Australia. I think the biggest pressure cooker you can buy and have sent here is an All American 921. However, you could get it delivered to a freight forwarder for free in the USA and then have it sent to AUS from there. I am not sure how much the freight forwarder will cost but there is a number of them that will do it for you.

You don't really need a steriliser, man. An All American 921 holds a decent amount and does the job fine. I have had no contamination with jars yet.

You can fit 19 pint jars and 7 quart jars in it according to Amazon, however, you can fit in two more quart jars at the top if you lay them down on their sides.

  6. I have not used the water bath method but you can get a Presto pressure cooker from Amazon.com delivered to your door cheaply. As of late last year you could get a 23 quart Presto delivered to your door for just under $110 AUS. If you get a 21 quart All American from Amazon.com then it will last you a life time. A pressure cooker will make life a lot easier. You can also use it for making liquid cultures, sterilising your utensils, sterilising soil and making your own pasta sauces or canning your own fish.

  7. I understand what you are saying, however, it is a useful tool for communication. I can still maintain my privacy though. I use a made up name but my friends know it's me, I have no qualms about not adding people I don't like, nobody but me sees my photos, my display picture is of an animal, nobody can post on my wall, my DOB is incorrect and the email address I use for business purposes is different to the one I use for Facebook so workplaces etc can not try to find me.

It is a handy tool if you want to keep up to date with certain events, artists, invitations etc but some people are too reckless with their information. A friend of mine uses it to track down people for debt collection and it's a good way to get yourself fired.

  8. That's a good point. However, if you are not breaking the law then there should not be a problem. The sucky thing about being a new member is that you want to get involved in the scene but it's hard starting off if you have no contacts or plants or prints to trade = /

  9. That's a good idea and I have thought about that before but I don't have access to a whole lot at the moment. Which plants are you thinking of?

There's some patches of bush remaining in Beechboro that I heard have some rare native orchids. However, some people want the land developed. This made me think that I should go grab some if development goes ahead and then I can propagate them and put them in other locations nearby.

  10. They are rooted. I put them in some well drained soil mix that I had used for cacti and catha edulis. I dipped them in some rooting hormone first, however, I realise this might not be necessary as they already have roots but someone told me to do it. Then I watered them and put a little bit of seaweed fertiliser in too. They are now in a 4 tier greenhouse which I misted and I also put some trays of perlite on the bottom to increase the relative humidity. I put a hygrometer in there and the humidity has increased to about 80-85%.

    Any thoughts?

  11. What Tripsis said. Go buy yourself a bag of rye grain (aka rye berries) or wheat grain.

Soak your grain for a day in a pot and then bring it to a simmer/boil for 10 minutes then strain it.

Put it into jars or mycobags and then sterilise it in your pressure cooker.

Once the bags have cooled then inoculate the grain with your liquid culture or agar wedges or what ever it is that you choose to use.

Set aside in a dark place and once colonised then you can use.

  12. Okay, so I went out and looked through the soil again. I found two of my three green babies and I put them back into the seedling tray that has a dome for humidity. I sprayed the soil with some water and some weak seaweed solution. One of them had a tiny brown spot but hopefully they will recover. I think I found another one that had germinated in the soil but I could not see any green on it yet. I think it was just sending out roots.

I think I will have lost a lot of seeds in the dirt and leafs but I will scrape up the rest later and put the dirt in a thin layer in a tub and spray it with seaweed solution and water. Hopefully I can get something back from this.
