    Aussie Myco Supplies

Hey guys I just posted this on Mushroom Bloke's forum. Here is a list of things that are commonly used in mycology (especially for the hobbyist mycophile) and where they can be bought in Australia. Perlite and vermiculite can be bought in large quantities cheaply from hydroponics shops. Bunnings also has them but in small bags and you will save lots if you buy a big bag from a hydroponics shop. Coir can be bought cheaply from hydroponics shops, Bunnings and other garden shops. Mini greenhouses can be bought from Bunnings. Rubbing alcohol (you can get this from Woolworths in the section where you get personal cleaning products). Don't buy it from a chemist as they are usually rip offs http://www.isocol.com.au/hhold.htm 100% isopropyl alcohol can be bought from Bunnings too. It's expensive as hell but it's good to use in your alcohol lamp whilst doing agar work. It comes in a spray bottle. Rubber/latex gloves can be bought from the supermarket like Coles and Woolies. Mason Jars http://www.redbacktrading.com.au/ (synthetic filter discs fit in these jars perfectly) Coles also sells mason jars cheaply and you will not have to pay for shipping but synthetic filter discs don't fit. Tyvek should not be a problem for these jars. Plasdene also sells jars http://www.plasdene.com.au/ Karo corn syrup (for liquid cultures) can be bought from David Jones. If you are in Perth then Kakulis Sisters in Fremantle sells it also. Sawdust, wood chips and chopped straw for those in Perth can be bought from http://wajking.com.au/ If you are in Perth and you want bulk syringes and needles then go to a feed store. There is a feed store in Belmont called Bio John but there would be others around too. You can buy boxes of them cheaply and you don't get dirty looks like you're a junkie. This is what the pharmacist gave me when I asked if he had some. Wanker! http://www.bio-john.com.au/ If you want organic grain then check out http://www.looseproduce.com/ in Como (Western Australia). Other health food shops around Australia should have it too. www.crownscientific.com.au sells agar and other scientific stuff in Australia but you have to register so they can make sure you are not a terrorist. This place sells petri dishes and other great gear for your myco lab http://www.wiltronics.com.au/ This place also sells lab equipment etc www.labtek.com.au This is another place for your lab needs http://www.livingstone.com.au/ This link isn't Australian but I find it helpful. www.mycosupply.com has all your myco needs. This is where I get my ready made agar (among other things). It saves me time, money and effort. If you want an analogue hygrometer then you can get a Western Instruments analog hygrometer for $5 USD on Ebay. Amazon.com also sells them. Some places might have them for a few dollars more. It's a lot cheaper buying them from overseas. Don't use a digital hygrometer because they aren't so good for our needs and they stuff up if the humidity is too high = / That's about all I can think of right now. A lot of what you need can be bought from Coles/Woolies and Bunnings such as bleach, paper towels, aluminium foil and spray bottles etc. Please feel free to add to my list. Regards Migraineur

    australia the proxy state ?

I didn't say China was going to take over Australia. However, China is trying to claim what looks like a very unfair share of the South China Sea and has the potential to disrupt trade and passage through the South China Sea. Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines etc are very worried as a result and it can affect many more nations. There have already been multiple incidences of China bullying other nations in the area because of this issue. There are also a few hundred million Indonesians to our north too. I agree that China does rely on us for resources at the moment but the Chinese are also investing heavily in many developing countries . If they find a place where they can find the same product that Australia provides but at a cheaper price then we start to lose our bargaining power. Also, the fact that we only have said navy base in Perth, the air force base in north Western Australia and the other bases in the Northern Territory is why we need an ally like the United States. Having access to a carrier strike group is a pretty good way to signal to other nations that they should leave us alone. Also, it's better to have the bases up north than on the south eastern coast. An attack on Australia is hardly going to come from the south. Also, I fail to see how seeing China as a threat means that one must hate Asian immigration.

    australia the proxy state ?

I was going to post the map of China's claim to the South China Sea that Dale Cooper posted. As much as people would hate to admit it we need the yanks. The United Kingdom bailed on us a long time ago and without the Americans we would be in a bad position. We only have a population of about 22/23 million people which also means that the Australian Armed Forces are relatively small. The Americans provide us with an ally and modern weapons such as Super Hornet Fighter Jets, Black Hawks, PC3 Orions, Abrams tanks and a multitude of other hi tech weaponry that we might not have otherwise.

    Interstate Cactus & Quarantine.

I had a package opened from overseas and they left a note in my package stating that it had been opened by customs etc. I was only ordering iPhone accessories from Honk Kong. AQIS and Customs tend to let you know if they have inspected something. I don't think people at Perth Airport would be forgiven easily though since AQIS clearly states in multiple places what one can and can not bring and there are bins to put things into.

Read this book. It is very interesting and it's not that big a book either: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Queen-Evolution-Human-Nature/dp/0060556579/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322305409&sr=8-2 This is also related: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_capital I think you'll find that sex has always been a commodity and we all pay for it some way or another.

    grain moisture content?

I've had not problems with shaking my grain. Do you use gypsum? This helps prevent the grain sticking together. If your grain is too moist then it would be harder to shake too as it would become gluggy and stick together. I used rye grain originally but when I couldn't get it I turned to wheat which is awesome because it's cheaper and easier to get. I'm guessing the bigger grain size of wheat would make it a little easier to shake too. I've never used wild bird seed. I prefer to have a consistent grain size so the grain cooks evenly. I also wonder if wild bird seed would be a bit harder to break apart in the jars once colonised because of the smaller grain size.
  14. I stand my cuttings up with bamboo that I cut from my garden and then I tie some string around the bamboo for support. If you find someone who has bamboo then ask to cut a bunch off. It's good for use as stakes.

    grain moisture content?

Do you cover your jars with foil when you put them in the pressure cooker? This stops water from entering the jars during sterilisation. If you have filled your pressure cooker up quite high then the water enter your jars too, especially if you've moving it around whilst walking up/down stairs etc. Also, if you simmer your grain for 10 mins or so after soaking it then once you strain it you will notice that the grain 'steam dries' to some extent which speeds up the process. I add gypsum when soaking grain because it stops the grain from sticking together. Don't rinse your grain after soaking it in gypsum otherwise it defeats the purpose of doing it in the first place. Using it can also give you a bigger harvest but you'll have to mix it in your substrate too. Putting a little in your pot of soaking grain is different to adding it to your bulk substrate.

    Growing cacti under lights

I've got a light and shade like this: http://www.growroom.com.au/p446/fluro-kit-with-shade I use it in Winter when I have to bring some plants inside and it's also good for cacti seedlings. It uses bugger all electricity too.

    shiitake mushrooms for sale...

You'd have to check here: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis We import a lot from China, however, they might have to be irradiated before/when they are sent. Australia has really strict quarantine rules because of the lack of diseases and pests that other countries have.

    Busted for porn

I remember I was at a girl's house once with some others and I opened the cupboard under the tv and a bunch of porn DVDs fell out. One of the girls suggested that we watch some porn.

I got my girlfriend into porn. I don't think I could handle a girl who got so angry about a guy who looked at porn. It makes me think that they're really controlling and insecure.

I've seen mycelium eat through aluminium trays (multiple times). I'm not sure how many types of fungi do this.
  22. Hi guys, My san pedro seedlings could probably do with some fertiliser. I have miracle grow but I am not sure if I should use full strength fertiliser or if I should dilute it. I don't want to hurt my babies. Any information would be appreciated.

  24. Hi guys, Could anyone tell me which worms are better for a worm farm? I know there is a number to choose from but I am unsure if some are better than others. I bought a Worm Cafe recently from Bunnings but I need to get some worms for it.
