my wild guess for the small orange shrooms - flammulina velutipes......

grab a long piece of string and thread through the center of the stems of your mushroom haul, then hang near a sunny window till dry. or use a food dehyrator or if you have a gas oven dry the shrooms on the oven racks with only the pilot light on

nice! do you have any trouble with plastic lids in the PC? I love the idea of using what you have. I use the pp takeaway style round 40ml sauce containers as petri dishes (food packaging suppliers) they're PC proof. Although not as good as spice jars, baby food jars aren't too bad either.

I think it's terribly tempting to cut corners. If you are going to try steam sterilization you need to think like a mushroom but also like the arch enemy mold. Mold moves faster so you have to get your myceliem troops down in numbers and spread all over the battle field. Just remember though the PC is the nuke that bombs your growing medium and almost obliterates the mold. If you use steam sterilization you're giving mold that chance of sucess. I've cut a few corners and what happens is.. you get really excited and your jars are coming along nicely. Then one day you wake up to a green mine field... you swear at your jars and start all over again. I say get a presto PC. It's the cheapest and it's big! cheers themushroombloke

I've growns some p.pulmonarius indoors and outdoors and i found there to be a remarkable difference between the 2 fruiting bodies. Although the mushroom grown indoors was fantastic the semi-wild outdoor fruiting body had more flavour, colour and texture. I believe that in the wild there are minute traces of minerals and compounds that a mushroom can draw on to get that extra colour, texture, flavour and perhaps even medicinal qualities. There are microscopic things going on that we just dont see. However i think you can get pretty close if you farm something like reishi out doors and in the correct enviroment. Is there a place in australia that fits the bill? I'm not sure, probably.

Mine's on the stove now. whilst it's not an All American she's still a beauty! will do me fine until I finish my beer keg steriliser then I can think about getting myself setup for a commercial operation I dont want to be a chef all my life. Anyways I fit 4 2 litre jars and a slender 900ml jar in my cooker probably could have laid a flat whisky bottle or 2 down as well if I wanted to push it. cheers the mushroom bloke

I havn't dabbled in cloning a puffball before. Has anyone given it a go? is it possible? I'm into edibles and I havn't seen anyone claiming they have any puff ball cultures. I think it'd be awesome to have giant puff balls. I dont know if anyone knows of the television show "the river cottage" but in one episode "hugh" goes mushrooming and finds a giant puff ball, takes out the center and stuffs and bakes it. Anyways any comments would be appreciated.

Whilst I dont think punkin has Hypholoma capnoides I do remember him mentioning he had "Brick cap (Hypholoma sublateritium)" which is a sub species to what you are talking about... possibly tastes almost the same, but remember you are what you eat, the same applies for mushrooms. Their substrate will effect their flavour! So in short hit Punkin up for the brick cap's!!!

I'm going to say that I first hand have learnt the answer to this question as i was given one petri dish of p.pulmonorious and I put it into three grain jars. That I then turned into 10 from each jar (30) when I tried expanding on the second generation the spawn seemed to slow down. I had too much spawn to put into substrates so I made some outdoor patches. But still I had spawn, So once that slow to colonise spawn was fully colonised I made up some bags those have only just fruited and the yield was woeful and it was slow to colonise the sugar cane bagess. Then I have cloned a fruiting body from this slow to colonise bags and it took a whil to spring to life on the agar but it worked, so I transfered to grain and the lazy bastard has only jumped onto one or two grains in like 5 days. I have also left some grain spawn purposely to die in a jar to see what it does... well mine went fluffy (apparently this happens when spawn gets old). When I took the old/dead spawn out of the jar it had a horrible smell it had a yellow tinge and when I broke up the grain it was chalky, not that super white fluffy, you get when you bash your grains. So I can conclusively say: Look after your culture library otherwise it's like having sex with your cousin!! lots of retarded mushrooms. cheers themushroombloke
