Pukatea (Laurelia novae-zealandiae) & Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum)
solomon replied to solomon's topic in Ethnobotany
big trees in the botanical garden here so I don't think you should worry too much but I would still bring them in if there was a bad frost. Their natural range is the North Island and the top of the South Island if i recall correctly. The nursery they are from is in Northland. -
Hmm, might as well make that $20 on #1

Crest Id please, not a trich.
solomon replied to J Smith's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
yeah (austrocylindr)opuntia subulata crest for sure. you can see the new "leaves" poking out the middle -
ah! so those little green pods are ripe fruit! i've always waited for them expecting to turn to a brown husk or something I guess I have a bit of seed of this to spread round if anyone is interested.

Mmm, I felt strong disassociative effects from this one smoking leaves and also flowers. Got mixed with Lobelia tupa flowers and leaves sometimes Wasn't too keen to try a brew, I think Torsten has a post on it somewhere saying it made his tummy hurt. I would have thought Desfontainia would be well suited to your climate mindperformer. It's somewhat common here and i often mistake the big pruned bushes for holly if they are not in flower. Any idea of what the seed pods look like? dont think I have ever seen em gotta try taking some cuttings of this one soon

Great thread, all the dried pepper looks nice. Have you tasted the Macropiper excelsum fruit, mindperformer? I will snap some pictures when they are in season. Help me with some landscaping...need crawler/groundcover suggestions
solomon replied to gtarman's topic in Ethnobotany
Cuttings are usually the go with Delosperma so don't worry bout all the effort with seeds. Many a granny has them in their garden. Trying to use Sceletium in the greenhouse at the moment as groundcover, it's taking off but is far from a mat. -

solomon replied to bℓσωηG's topic in Seed & Plant Swaps
Don't have those but there is some viable A. confusa here that I can put in the post for you tomorrow if you like with some other seeds to get you on your way. Good to see you round, hope things are bright. -
Wow, funny how recognizable some are, like the Iboga seed. Top notch! ;-)

Inspired me to go tadpole hunting last night bogfrog Sitting silently by the bathtub in the backyard i realized there were about four frogs all watching me on the rim of the tub.. Set up a wee tub with a few pools and some ferns and rocks etc. I would feel guilty about taking their babies but I plan on releasing the frogs into the backyard when they mature. Pinched about 6 tadpoles, there are all L. ewingii I assume as those were the frogs around. There are L. raniformis sometimes too.

I thought I might document the life of my Tabernanthe seedlings. These are just over a week old, I didn't write down the date that I sowed them but it was around 3 months ago.. I had given up hope but kept the soil moist anyway. At the moment they are on a heat pad in a humidity chamber with 48w of cool white CFL any comments/suggestions are appreciated Seed sourced from SAB, cheers

Wow you have some really great plants, mindperformer! How many watts are the CFLs and do they get any supplementary light?

A. vulgaris has been more potent in my experience than A. absinthium for it's oneirogenic effects, and the mindstate it puts me in when trying to get to sleep Could be that I recognize Mugwort's effects better because I have been using it for longer. I haven't experimented with either in a while, I started getting these horrid awakenings when I was half asleep. Felt like I was drifting further and further back into my head and away from reality accompanied by a sense of letting go and I really had to struggle to break out of it. I wonder if I was just catching my self drifting into the dream world and stopping myself. Care to share how you went about striking cuttings?

Just potted up the cutting in the last photo, two roots about 10cm long! will take photos when i have a camera Going to attempt to harden it off now.
