Subs fruit during the first few cold snaps around mid to late autumn, temps need to plummet to around -6 at night for the fruiting stage to begin
You don't mean minus 6 at night ,surely a typo.( ya duffa) Where i am the coldest it gets is around 1 deg Celsius and subs' grow here quite happily.

I think it has character. On the tag it says indoors or outdoors ? At the moment i have it on the window sill here by the computer. I will find a better spot for it over the next few days.

The issue is that Ebay does not allow Lophs to be sold on the site. That's why it was listed as 'button cactus' and he was pleading ignorance.
I understand.(I wasn't hanging shit on him/her) I was going to buy one but didn't want to blow my money on something that was not the genuine item. It is hard to fathom that they take so long to grow. As stated earlier,it would be criminal to watch one grow for 20 odd years and then chow down on it.

Well ,i went to the said shop. This is what i brought. I hadn't even got out of the shop and i got nailed ...ouch!. Dunno if this is a good idea?! ( i know this is the mycology section but it just follows on with what has been discussed.) I paid $15 for a 3" pot . Please don't tell me i did no good . No tell me .

I too was watching these EBAY items. I emailed the seller and asked could he tell me the botanical name ? His reply was ", grower just knows it as button cactus". ( maybe he was playing it down a bit (pleading ignorance)). As i am so new to cactus ,i didnt want to buy something that was , well ,not what i was after. So going by everyones reaction, they are the ones i am after.They dont appear to be spikey so they would suit me down to the ground. Are there other cactus types people are calling 'button cactus ' when they are not really THE button cactus. ( i feel like a kinda garten child compared to you guys with the terminology and abbreviations. I will get the hang of it )

Since I will probably be growing only 1 maybe 2 varieties of cactus, I dont think I will worry about asking the owner of this plant for a cutting since it turns out that it is not the one that I was after ...bummer. Thanks for the ID.

So if I fill the tubs with tap water and just leave them they will self purify and be okay for frogs...?
then put rocks and ledges or old school besa blocks..(the ones with 2 holes in them ) around the outside edges of the tubs and plant stuff and back fill around the edges with soil and stone, old bricks etc..
Are rats predators of frogs...have seen a few around these parts..big bastids too..
Keep in mind that Some metals are toxic to frogs or tadpoles and so can be some uv treated containers. Frogs have a funky secretion on their skin which can repel some predators. The frogs shown earlier (Perons tree frog ) smells peppery and if you rub your eyes after picking one up,it can sting.
Chiral, are you going to dig the bath in at ground level? Ground dwelling speceis may have trouble getting to the water if it is too high up. Also Some frogs can drown if they can not get out of a body of water. Many pool owners find drowned frogs as a result of the water level being too low for the non tree frog varieties to get out of.

Wild caught food rarely needs dusting with vitamins and calcium as they have been exposed to the natural elements. House flies are easy to breed and are pretty small. Vinegar flies ( compost bin flies) are smaller still and can be farmed on banana skins. Or make a fine mesh net and scoop it through long grass to collect meadow plankton. Place a solar light near a pond to attract moths for frogs to eat.

It sound like you live near a heap of factories with masses of chimneys bellowing smoke 24/7 ? Frogs are pretty tough little buggers. Make your enviroment habitable and they will survive.

Some species of frogs only breed in Autumn and winter. You still might be suprised at what might end up in your pond. Build it now ,get it established for future visitors. I used to get old bath tubs from the tip or when the council does hard rubbish . ( every one puts their crap that they dont want any more on their nature strip and the counsil takes it to the tip.( great finds on those days)).

A local garden has these cacti in their front yard. Should I ask for a cutting ? What I am saying is this any thing excieting?

frogs and tadpoles enemies are introduced fish. Also ,you dont want to have a pond under a tree. When it rains, all the residue drops into the pond .Leaves and bark also pollute the water when they drop in. You can encourage native frogs to visit your pond by making it frog freindly. Have hollow logs and that around the pond to allow the frogs to hide during the day. Discard some fruit scraps near there to encourage insects for the frogs to feed on. There is a motto... "build it , and they will come!"

Its when the cops (wildlife department) come to bust you for a few illeagal frogs and find other 'STUFF' . Then you gotta worry.

Has anyone here had any experience with raising and keeping frogs in a controlled environment.
What species were you hoping to keep? What size is the tank that you have ? Green tree frogs (Litoria caerulea ) are very hardy frogs to maintain in captivity.Once adult ,provided you have kept them under the right conditions,are easy to get to spawn.Frogs are huge in the pet trade now and any pet shop that sells herps' and frogs usually carry the food source required for that animal. Crickets and woodies (cock roaches) are sold for food but get quite expensive. I suggest you breed your own 'roaches as green tree frogs are very greedy .As for heating , a heat mat will work ok however,if there is a large water area in the vivarium ,you will get a lot of condensation and then bacteria. Make sure that the lid of the enclosure has a full mesh lid to reduce the amount of condensation and to allow uv through which you will be providing .Palm peat is a good substrate . Never use potting mix. Monsteria is a good sturdy plant for vivariums. Peace lilies grow well too. The plants depend on the lighting that you provide. A good enclosure has a 25mm hole drilled into the bottom to allow drainage.I don't use any filtration in my enclosures but if you want it for aesthetic purposes then that will be fine. The frogs frequently defecate in the water and you will find that you will need to do water changes frequently. A temperature range for green tree frogs is from around 18 deg' Celsius to like 32 deg' Celsius. I don't find the temperatures crucial but it depends on your night time lows. Frogs can suffer from calcium deficiencies if calcium is not added to their diet occasionally and they are not given uv to convert this calcium. This is just a quick ,rough run down on a few of the aspects of keeping frogs. There are stacks of web sites with ideas etc... on keeping frogs so you wont have any trouble finding information. Just a warning, when the frogs mature, the males can be SO noisy and call all night. At first it is great, what a thrill but after about 4 nights of this, you will have to get some ear plugs. There is a web site www.herpshop.com.au that sell a lot of the paraphernalia relating to keeping herps' and frogs. There is a section there called the HERP TRADER, you might be able to buy some frogs from that site. Green tree frogs do require a wildlife license. If there was any thing in particular that you wanted to know, I might be able to help.

At least you are euthanizing them humanely. When I have had to euthanize small critters, I put them in the fridge first which makes them unconscious and then they go into the freezer. As for caterpillars, I breed several species of butterfly and see every caterpillar as a vehicle for something more to come. Caterpillars are ravenous feeders and can defoliate a plant in a very short period of time. I also get annoyed when stray caterpillars have chewed and ring barked a plant that I have been hovering over for months. I don't have any ideas to share to keep the grubs (potential butterfly/moth) away from all those plants but you could probably experiment with natural sprays like garlic or something. Cacti and garlic, sounds palatable, doesn't it ?

Well, I have done some research on cactus. I previously thought that there was only 1 'active' cactus and that was not available in Australia. Until my recent mushroom interest was rekindled I also thought that there was only 1 hallucinogenic mushroom. Naive , I know but hey, 25ish years ago ,not every one had a computer with vast amounts of knowledge at their fingertips. We picked those mushrooms and were more than happy with that. We had no-one to consult regarding dosage or identity,we just worked it out ourselves( the hard way!) Each time the season ended it was probably a good thing. Having said that, I am wondering which cactus is the easiest to obtain and then maintain ? No , not bitten by the cacti-bug YET ,but I am genuinely interested.I want to know more and will be reading the cacti section of this forum from another perspective.

I will have to do some research on cacti. I know nothing about them. There is a plant nursery locally and it has what they call 'collectors corner' and it has some bizzare cacti there. The next time i go there i will be thinking of all you cacti freaks out there:) Has anyone heard of the musician Loudon Wainwright, yes,no ,maybe? He does this song called "The Acid Song", it is worth a listen. I like it.

So this thing you have all got for cacti, is it actually for asthetic purposes, or medicinal or other. I am not really into pricks and am not keen on roses for the same reason.BUT...if there is a use for cacti, I am sure I could become interested. Some of the non spikey ones are pretty fascinating. I do have Aloe Vera that I use for medicinal purposes. My plant types are Bromeliads and carnivorous plants among other native stuff, Oh , and mushrooms. What is the difference between mushrooms and toadstools anyway?

I grew up in Altona (West subs) and travelled to the high country, Mt macedon, the Otways, or Donneybrook to pick. Never noticed one closer to Melbourne.
I'll feel bloody silly if I was doing all that travelling, whilst they were growing at home.

I have found them (P.sub') all along the peninsula. Mostly coastal. Lets say from Shoram to Cheltenham. As for the Otway Ranges, sounds great,i love camping . I dont know if i could go on a Trip with strangers though .(if you know what i mean).I shall check the "chill space" forum and see if it is up my alley!.

Kiddies pool ,are you talking about like one of those clam shell pools. Most of the kids pools will break down over time and may leach toxins into the water. A bath is your best /cheapest option. Look on EBAY under ponds and you might get a bargain.
