    Online agar sales

It sounds like the agar dried out and the culture died, possibly it was too hot. There's really no need to incubate agar cultures in summer, a closet in a cooler part of the house would be better, if it gets too hot the cultures will contaminate. In winter you may need incubation but I found the cooler temps keeps them growing slowly so you don't get a snowball effect and end up with too many cultures to maintain. Make your agar up in a saucepan first and pour it into jars before it cools, it can be kept in the fridge for a few months like that until you're ready to sterilise in the microwave if you don't have a Pressure Cooker. Agar can be microwaved in a taco sauce jar with the lid on(strangely it doesn't spark or cause problems). Leave the lids slightly loose and tighten them as soon as the microwave stops, but use a glove or a tea towel as they will be very hot. just boil it and keep it hot for a few minutes, no need for thermometers just keep it hot for at least 2,preferably 3 minutes, you may have to start and stop the microwave so it doesn't overheat or turn the power down once it has boiled to keep it close to boiling point. If it boils too hard it will dehydrate so keep it at the point where it only just boils Here's an old post with some excellent agar recipes, take your pick Agar recipes

I've never used that brand, but you should get some growth on agar even if your sterile technique is not up scratch. You'd be more likely to grow contaminants than mycelium though, either that or contaminated mycelium. I've used straight agar before and it worked OK but you really need some nutrient source to get good growth. In GGMM when they speak of the spawn run they are already a few steps past the stage where petri dish cultures are being discussed. The spawn run is usually when colonised grain spawn is mixed with a bulk substrate and the spawn "runs" through the substrate. The incubation temps are similar for the spawn run and for agar culture but a few species require slightly different temps. Chapter 12 covers petri dish culture, but for species specific incubation temps just google it.

    trades in free print thread

Maybe you could take a scraping or a small sector from the print you are sending out if the member that's going to receive it is cool with the idea. It doesn't take much to be able to study a print so if it's done in a clean environment it shouldn't make much difference. I say still send your print out and let karma sort it out, someone here will take up the slack and make sure you don't miss out. We can't let a few slackers ruin it for everyone.

Good points Botanika my post was mostly speculation, I hope I didn't come off like I was disagreeing with you. @ nut - it's been ages since I read John Allens' works, didn't he suggest something about livestock from Argentina being a likely candidate ?

    Banisteriopsis caapi Propagation 101

Is it normal for them to drop their leaves before the new growth emerges , or is that just a symptom of low RH and a dry environment ?

Very nice,I could do a lot with place like that. Here's another link to a site with green manure mixes Green Harvest Good luck with your project, I'd be interested to see a pics when you've made some progress with it.

    Land rehabilitation

Have you thought about green manure crops in the short term ? They will give fast results and hold the soil together. They can be slashed to help build a litter layer that will improve your chances of success when you plant intermediate species such as small nitrogen fixing trees. If there is livestock in the area you may have to check what is in the mix as some clovers can cause problems. When an area is desolate things grow back in phases, the first being weeds and grasses, then small trees and then larger longer lived species. The commercial green manure mixes emulate the first phase while you decide what will best suit your area for phase 2. Another important factor in rebuilding "dead" soil can be soils food web or microbiology, Actively Aerated Compost Teas can inoculate the soil with vital microbes and fungii and speed up the initial phases and get the project off to a good start. AACT's are easy to make and can turn dead barren clay into healthy soil very fast. Teaming with Microbes is a great book on all aspects of the soils food web and AACT, but there is plenty of stuff about it on the Web.
  8. I got hold of a few Psychotria leaves (viridis & charcruna) last month and I decided to try striking a few of them in jars of filtered water with micropore tape over holes in the lids. There was no additives in the water it was just plain filtered water. They have all grown roots and some are ready to plant. Some of the leaves had some damage before I propagated them but they look like they might be OK I never changed the water but did give the jars a bit of a swirl every couple of days. One even turned upside down and the petiole poked out of the water, it produced roots just as well as the others that were in the water. This must be one of the easiest plants to propagate - I had a few other cuttings from other species going at the same time using traditional media based propagation and over Christmas the heat got to them and killed a few off, but all the leaf cuttings in jars have pulled through. 100% success rate I'm stoked, now all I have to do is keep them alive while they shoot, I'm guessing that will be harder than getting them to root.

    Sinister sites

I don't go much for conspiracy theories these days but when I see something with so many curious anomalies I can't help but wonder why. This place is chock full of occult symbolism and some bizarre macabre murals. There is speculation that it will be the HQ for the NWO or an alien base, I don't place much credence in wild speculation but I don't know what to make of it all. Denver International Airport

    myco natives

I'm not sure fungus has much need to evolve, not on our timescale anyway, it responds to environmental conditions more by mass sporilation and probability of some spores finding a suitable niche. It's a bit different in the plant kingdom where hybridisation takes place naturally and is quite common, but fungus is notoriously hard to hybridise and exchange genes because of chemicals produced by the mycelium that prevent clamping and stops genes being transferred. It is an intriguing point about the genetic similarity of NZ Australian species though, there must be some common link. Birds are also world travellers and some species forage on the forest floor and could be another suspect. I had an idea of using birds to spread inoculated grain and/or spores in an evil plot to infest my district with a particular species of interest, low probability of success but high a volume effort could equal success if the timing and conditions were right. I've often wondered if the Aboriginals and Maoris knew about them but the knowledge was an inner circle type of thing, with the possibility of confusing them with galerinas it may have been considered safer to tell the kids all mushrooms like that are poison. I really cant see the Aboriginal elders telling white settlers about hallucinogenic substances either, I'd tend to think things like that would have been guarded knowledge for those that have earned their stripes so to speak.

    KELPIE X ROTTY FOR SALE

Did a Rotty slip one into a Kelpie bitch or did a Kelpie take a flying leap at Rotty bitch ? Seriously though that sucks having to get rid of it, I've seen a Kelpie Rotty cross and it was one of the smartest dogs I've ever seen. Just out of curiosity does the landlord own any dogs ? I know a dog has the potential to do some damage to a property but it's not the sort of problem that can't be negotiated. They could do another inspection and maybe adjust the rent to take into account any damage the dog may cause. Really though most dogs only do superficial damage and most of the damage is to the tenants property away ie shoes, buckets, pot plants etc I know they can chew doors and walls at times but that's where the inspection comes in and if you agree to repair any damage that is caused by the dog, what's the drama ? It's not like a house that's had a dog has lower rental value than one that hasn't, real estate agents don't give a fuck about that. If anything a house that is pet friendly is likely to command a higher rent than one that isn't (I know people who are forced to pay higher rents to be able to have dogs) so it just doesn't make much sense to not allow pets. I say have polite argument with the landlord, you know the kind - where you have a smile on your face the whole time and just really pester them until they say yes, the kind of argument/negotiation where you presume you will win. Put a spin on it like it's going to be a good thing and the house will have higher rent as a result in the future and use a bit emotional blackmail ie what's going to happen to the poor little dog, we've become really attached to him etc. It's worth a shot edit - I wouldn't put my phone no on the forum anyone could get it, I'd correspond by PM first.
  13. I cut the rooted sections off and planted them, my thinking was if I planted a small piece of leaf it would have a smaller transpiration area and not dry out as fast as the full leaf. I then put the offcuts back in the water and they all rooted too, some pieces of leaf have given me 3 cuts. I probably should have cut the leaves into smaller sections the first time, but they all have roots, I'm stoked. They really are a remarkable plant. @ Dundee - I just used filtered water, I don't know if you need nutrients at that stage, it could promote growth of algae, but it should still work.

Who wants Casuarius to come back

Let's try to stay objective, it could have just been an innocuous comment taken out of context. There could also be some other issue we haven't considered. If he's deleted his account I presume his PM's will be gone too, so there may be no way to know for sure what happened. I just hope he comes back, he was posting some awesome eye candy and he really knew his stuff.

    MDMA drought?

That does seem strange that someone approached you asking those sorts of questions. I've never had anyone approach me to ask questions about illegal drugs and I'd be very suspicious if someone did. I make a habit of not answering questions from "random goons" on the street. You never know who they really are or what their motivations are and when we talk to anyone we're likely to unintentionally give away free information in the course of the conversation. The fact that there is an E drought of does seem to indicate that the big syndicates have shifted their focus to something that is not so high on the police hit list. I've seen many times when there is a shortage of pot, people who wouldn't normally do so go for readily available things like amphetamines or acid so there is some truth to what he said. Some people will go to the pub and piss up, others will look for whatever they can get.
  16. When is this due to appear Sly ? I tried the link in the article but I keep getting a message that the page doesn't exist. I went outside last night and saw an unusually large bright light that I've never noticed before, it was by nowhere near the intensity of the sun but it was much brighter than Venus.

    pronouncing subaeruginosa

I suppose it depends who has them, if someone has a bag full and is willing to share them and they calling them Sub ar ig an oosa I'd call them that too. You see this discussion about how to pronounce things classified in Latin a lot. I read an article that stated since there are no surviving speakers of ancient Latin to verify the pronunciation there is no correct answer, so call them what you want and don't stress it. If you are with someone that pronounces something different it's just common courtesy to use the same pronunciation as them in their presence or in their greenhouse etc.

Yeah but if you pronounce that with a NZ accent all the vowels come out different Sib ear oh gan uh su Sorry I couldn't resist that
  21. That's possible The same tactics were used when enterprise bargaining came in and still are We're going to take A B C D E off you When they could only get away with taking A&C (which was all they really wanted) workers were left screwed with the pretence that they actually won something. Typical fascist tactics @ Shortly - Sally is already considered "evil" by our corporate controlled government (puppets)
  22. Do we get compensation for our loss if we are forced to destroy plants that have have been obtained legally ? I don't know if I could bring myself to destroy a healthy plant anyway, to me it would be like being asked to kill one of my kids and only keep the ones chosen by someone else. They'll have to bring their own henchmen to do the killing. And what of people with large established trees ? Removing a tree is a time consuming and costly exercise, removing several would be very expensive not to mention emotionally scarring, who is expected to pay for that ? In the case of Acacias they would be destroying the habitats of countless native species as well, how does that stand from a legal perspective ? Will removing trees contravene any council or land and environment regulations and if so will we liable for prosecution under any of those acts/regulations if we remove trees - could be a technical issue with the implementation of the bill. end of rant.

    magick

In the beginning was the word and the word was with god Is a curious anomaly from the bible in John 1:1 The book of John is full anomalies and that particular one is thought by some to be a reference to the power of incantions or the spoken word.Theres been a lot of debate about that over the years and it gets regurgitated from time to time. Some say it's a reference to how the universe was magickally spoken into existence in a similar way to how Australian aboriginals believe the world was sung into existence . Words have great power - how much ?

    Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreams are common when you go to a different place to where you'd normally sleep, I think it's tied in with the energy flow in the area where you sleep, even re arranging your furniture can be enough to stimulate lucid dreams. I can do it sometimes but it can be like C.T. said and be an indicator that some area of your life is out of balance. Traditional Chinese Medicine has a different take on dreams than westerners, sometimes it can give insights into the meaning of dreams. TCM dreams
