The previous caretaker was a little vague about it, but from what I understand it is 11 or more years old. I think.
It certainly grows quickly once it starts going. Its thrown out a new pup quicker than my grafted loph.

If you don't mind me asking, what's the purpose of grafting?
well, there can be many reasons for grafting.. with slow growing cacti like lophophora it can speed up the maturing process allowing them to flower and produce seed more quickly. In this particular case, something had eaten a big chunk out of the root system and I thought it might be finished, so I grafted to the top of it to keep it going.

Wow, never seen that before! How did this come about?
It looked like this when it arrived in the mail .. I get air roots on cuts that I leave lying around for ages...
EDIT --
but this is a particularly rooty specimen

Zing!
Reminds me of the weekend.
I really like the color pallette for this one.
To me she seems slightly amused to be in five places at once.
(Is there more than five?)

you know, if lophs starve for light, it's bad, but if you, use a lot of heat at the same time, it even makes it worse.
an issue like yours, can never wait, one has to take action right away, otherwise the problem worsens, and often that means, you will not be able to fix it later.
Yeah, seed germination area has been migrated to a higher light area. Had to do some gaffer taping to stop cords from being disasterous. I think theyll be much happier where they are now.

haha not much light at the moment i have to move them.

Teehee. I hope the cacti get that big at EGA!

is this boobies cactus? M .Geosomething?
It came as part of an ebay order - Trichocereus Bridgesii 'Achuma'
there are a bunch of ordinary looking tips and logs as well.
I can pop some photos of them up too if you like.

funky bend going on.
Yeah I didnt think it would survive, I had to sacrifice half the log to save as much as I did. The bend is the result of the remaining burn, about 25% of the original damage remains.

I thought it looked like a mantis head

i'm very surprised that the beer trick didn't work.
i use a failed homebrew beer batch, and each morning it is CHOCKAS full of beer-battered escargot.
The beer trick worked a little bit, but the sheer number of snails made it ineffective, it worked well for slugs though. Stomping with gumboots in the wet seems to be my most effective method so far.

Ha, 1 down 10,000 to go
I did actually do the other 10,000 also... turns out they had reserve forces that hold a grudge and eat all my favorite plants (mainly the cactus tips and meristems)
Cheeky things. We actually hand picked about 12 buckets of snails out of our backyard to no useful effect.
Beer traps didnt work, yeast didnt work, hair didnt work, spraying caffeine didnt work...
I stomp all over the garden in gumboots when it is wet now. Still waiting for diatemacious earth to arrive and see if that is the solution i need.

all the bare rooted lophs i have seen (which isnt a lot) have had two fat roots like a tooth, these ones only have one.. i wonder if it is var. related or chance..
