    And underneath your toe nails (seal them in, it easily passes off as dirt)..

    The cactus, that is...

    If anyone would be willing to part with a cutting i would be very thankful,

    it looks like a fine, typical peru pachanoi specimen,

    and i hear it grows very fast.

    Would prefer to give money,

    but can trade if need be - have a 50cm blue psycho0 x scop,

    and a macrogonus or two...

    That was heaps used instead of hops at one stage...

    I can report that catnip tea is definately relaxing. it has... Nepala-something... some kind of flavanoid...

    its basically like mescaline to 50% of cats, apparently... high, horny and sometimes CATatonic... :P

    Oh man.

    Big question.

    So from my own perspective, I would theorise that at one stage there was simply a small genetic variance of a single columnar cactus... then from that variance, perhaps cereus, tricho, blue myrtle etc all branched via certain isolated geographic pockets.

    If I were then to pick the genotype of the trichocereus branch, i would surmise it to be either a rough tescheckii or a many ribbed peruvianus form. But basically, something with spines, as many of the old-world creatures that used to exist in South America would otherwise have demolished the population via nutritional source - i.e., i could see a smooth San Pedro being a tasty snack for one of those colossal vegetarian bears, etc.. :)

    But otherwise, there is honestly no way we can really tell, unless someone were to do an extensive demographic and DNA study to figure out the recession of particular genes - or unless there was a fossil specimen found, and we could match the genetic structure strand by strand... but yeah can't see that happening any time soon, really..

    In any event, in a recent cacti thread, Ms Smith seemed to be agreeing with the assumed consensus that anything after the original genotype was likely a clusterfuck of an Homo Sapiens influenced demographic.

    ...It sure is fun to theorise though!!! :)

    guys, try salvia guaranitica - it has a marked benzo effect due to its content of cirsiliol, which is a flavanoid.

    Cirsiliol is clinically more effective than ambien, which is a commonly prescribed benzo in the states.

    i don't recommend a tea, it tastes like ass - smoking has a MARKED effect,

    or just chew up a few leaves.

    i promise you'll have a minor "holy shit...i feel something" moment...

    also, the plant is used among the natives in some south america localities as - a sedative :)

    widely available commercially - should be some at bunnings in a few weeks.

    Wait, so we can assume that much of the Trichocereus variation is man-made?

    That is an epic feat.

    I always thought that populations of Echinopsis evolved naturally - and that 'dead zone' occured simply because some kind of environmental influence over time seperated the two 'patches'.

    I wish i knew what the motives of Andean cultures were to do this (besides the obvious...). Perhaps they didn't need any other motive?

    All history says is that it was an esteemed plant and revered by the locals - but how the heck did it travel and morph to such an extent, if it was truly just 'carried'? Surely there must be alot more environmental influence involved??

    Or perhaps the revered status of these plants is alot older than we thought, and the distribution happened many more thousands of years ago.. enough time for reasonable variation of the genus to occur...

    I would probably be keen to get some seed. I really want to source seed from those really smooth glaucus pachanoi with short spines. Does anyone know what region they come from?

    I'll echo this question. As per MS Smiths' Trich map, it would be in the Northern area - Between Peru and Ecuador.

    However, there are also short spined populations around Matucana.

    So the only trick is getting a reliable source for these seed types.

    We may have a checkmate... unless anyone has a contact?

    That link is invaluable, thanks so much - answers some of my questions totally - i thought i had read all the pinned, but i guess that was a year and a bit back.

    Cactuscarl, i too have seen pachanoi - 'akin' plants... but it is exactly how you say, we don't have the diversity range of what i have observed to be the truer 'old world' plants.

    I agree, i believe that it's all still theory - no-one has the time, or the resources, to do a serious document of the west coast of America. And i also agree that theoretically, one can then look at any PC Pach or Pachanoi 'akin' and claim,

    "that is Pachanoi".

    But for those of us who have seen the pictures of the medicine stalls in peru, and the wild cultivars that have such pleasant growth habits, I am reminded that i have never seen a 'spineless' Pachanoi phenotype per Britton and Rose,

    nor what was originally identified as the KK242,

    Nor the a-typical Matucana Pachanoi.

    I will take it upon myself to do a bit more research here, and study that link provided by Zelly - in the meantime,

    If i were to order seed, would anyone else be interested? I just need to make sure that everything is all completely legal and that i won't get a fine or criminal record, etc. (:P)

    Could anyone else who has sucessfully, or unsuccessfully purchased Echinopsis seed perhaps chime in and tell us the result? ie,

    Who you ordered from, subsequent growth rates, true to expected phenotype etc...

    Many have theorised, for at least a decade now, that our much revered 'PC-PACH' Is actually an Huanucoensis X.

    Or a Scopulicolus x Bridgesii.

    Or a Bridgesii x Cordobensis.

    Or... ...

    So the only species of Echinopsis/Trichocereus 'Pachanoi' that i know of amongst the waters of our community is the KK339. This is a plant that in my opinion WOULD fit the classic Pachanoi description - At least from most of the grow-outs I've seen from Karel Knize (one grow admittedly looked very Macrogonus). This cactus is a beautiful plant, and at least in my eyes, worthy of collection.

    However - looking at all the Pachanoi varieties from our American members, I can't help but feel a little left out.

    I'm sure i can't be the only one.

    Therefore, I'm trying to solve my dilemma by doing a bit of research here..

    As a casual cactus hobbiest I've heard rumours that we can actually import Echinopsis seeds without too much hassle - no doubt this is why we have Karol Knize, IcarosDNA and SS material, correct?

    So, as a community, do we have any members that have friends, or sources in Peru/Ecuador, that could provide seed of different Pachanoi varieties? I hear that Karel Knize is no longer active(?), and unreliable. IcarosDNA, whilst contributing vastly to our collections of Macro/Peruvianoids, does not live anywhere near the Pachanoi territory (observing from MS Smiths' Map :))

    Sacred Succulents have plants that i hear to be Pachanoi - the variety Kimnach, and another called Torres & Torres(spelling). Has anyone tried/and/or successfuly imported seed of these types?

    The ethnobotanical interest of plants, but especially cacti, is growing, and growing in Australia.

    Many of us are now making our own crosses, and i'm not talking about the serious collectors amongst us - i'm talking folks who have a trich or two, which tend to flower now and again. I have personally been contacted for pollen by friends who i would not even consider having an interest in species variation.

    This is all not to say the varieties offered by our local ethnobotanical shops aren't absolutely great :) (a-HEM..)

    Nor do i discredit all those fantastic people that make all these crazy crosses.. (My jaw literally dropped a few years back when i read the words 'Terscheckii x Psycho0'...)

    But i feel we could be doing more as a community to increase our variety of SOURCE MATERIAL - from South America - and not just by relying on our local vendors to provide.

    Note that this doesn't just go for Echinopsis spp. - there are distinct other variants of cacti (or normal plants for that matter!),

    scattered throughout the Americas, that would hold Ethnobotanical purpose/heritage/interest towards our Australian collections.

    Anyone please feel free to add discussion, info/documenting regarding importing, possible contacts, leads, etc...

    I'd also like to say,

    this post was not an attack, or a gripe at all,

    just a theoretical observation by a casual hobbiest.. give me an argument if i'm wrong, i'm listening..

    So, just a question(s) here....

    Why is there such a massive gap between the Chan Chan KK339-ers and the rest of the trichos? Is that just the way they evolved? (or, ie, someone migrated to chan chan a couple of millenia back from bolivia/peru and brought a typical phenotype with them?)

    Are there trichos that inhabit that space in between? Or is it just a 'dead zone'?

    If there are trichos in between, what kind and type are they?

    Are there reports of sacramental use in that gap? Or are they simply respected as local flora :) ?

    I definately feel the curious badger on this one..

    Hey guys,

    have not visited this forum in a long while, and although my ethnobotany hobby is still strong i'm sad to admit i'm moving on, and in moving to a new place soon i'll have to get rid of my collection, which i originally massed for a source of income via ebay ornamental selling.

    pictures below of collection.

    I must apologise for the picture quality, but all in all there are AT LEAST 13-14 metres PLUS of cacti,

    which includes varieties such as:

    -Psycho0 (roughly half of stock(grow very fast!!)),

    -various non-kk242 peruvianus

    -a small number of various bridgesii, ie. a few eileens, and what i think is some old SAB stock (some jess and con i think, memory is hazy)

    -many different crosses, ie juuls giant x bridge, terschekii x psycho0, some of those J1,2 and 3 crosses that were flying about a few years ago.as well as various scops and other unrecognizables.

    So this is for the Canberra area only guys, i'm sorry,

    and i believe a fair asking price would be $650?

    if this is an unfair price could a more senior member pm me and suggest a more modern one suitable for todays rate? thanks :)

    from memory it was a dollar a cm as going rate so thats at least half price for 13-14 metres of quality stock,

    PLUS i will throw in a metre or two of free Backeberg clone

    PLUS i will deliver to anywhere in/around the ACT area free of charge :)

    if anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to pm,

    i only have access to internet once every 12 hours so be patient if i haven't responded immediately.
