What is the best way to store seeds and keep them viable?
I understand you can freeze most vegetable seeds but I'm lost when it comes to entho seeds like B. Caapi and P. Viridis.
-
For sale are some Banisteriopsis Caapi seeds sourced from Brazil. These were harvested in October so they are fresh and viable.
$10 for 10 seeds including postage within Australia.
EDIT: $1 per seed. Minimum order is $10. So if you would like 15 seeds then that's $15.

Does anyone know of any cheap areas?

Herbalistics has Wasabi Japonica so I think I'll get some from there. Most of the wasabi in packets is nice but I want the authentic wasabi paste made from the plant. I think next time I go to a Japanese restaurant I'll see if they have some real wasabi and try it. If I don't like it there might not be much point to growing it.

Thanks for all the ideas Santiago. The worst part about our society is that people think it's bad to fail or be wrong. If society was more accepting to failure people might actually learn from it. I'm minimizing my chance of failure by asking for help and sharing information with others. I might not be able to eliminate failure but I can definitely minimize the chances of it happening.
This is a good TED speech
Kathryn Schulz: On being wrong
I don't really want to make this a full time job to start with. For now I think slow growing plants that don't need much attention will be good. So agaves, cactus and grass trees will definitely be on my list. I want to grow the plants from seed so the plants have better genetics and are more appealing than cuttings. I can use the plants grown from seed as stock plants and take cuttings from them once I get the nursery started.
At the end of the day no matter what happens I can't lose anything but my time. I enjoy looking after plants and learning about them so to me my time is well spent.

Oi buttsack hehe... I dont how you would go relocating them as their size/age, buts worth a shot if they HAVE to go.
This site might be helpful for ID http://www.worldwidewattle.com/
I have a book on qld/nnsw plants http://www.mangrovestomountains.com/ which is partially helpful too. It has most the above mentioned Acacia in it.
Be awesome if they could stay where they are
Oh a ruler or something for size comparison can help heaps when trying to ID Acacias
I'ver seen Mangroves and Mountains on ebay for $70. Do you think it would be worth getting to help me ID plants?
Whoever buys the block will be building a house on it. Most of the blocks where these trees are get cleared to build the house and then they plant new trees lol. Such a waste.
Make botanical glossaries your friend, you are going to need it, constant refering. Here's a couple to look at.
http://florabase.dec...u/help/glossary
http://www.anbg.gov....sary/croft.html
obtusifolia
http://www.worldwide...obtusifolia.php
longifolia
http://www.worldwide.../longifolia.php
start small, if the phyllode tips confuse you between the species, simply focus on that until you understand, then move on.
I was going to expand, but refer to previous statements. What I will try to do is get you some photos from my plants which are beaning up nicely at the moment, just give me a bit of time, will try for days but could be much longer.
Thanks for the advice mate. Your not wrong about use it or lose it. I found a obtusifolia last year but I didn't get any photos of it so I forgot what it looks like. I found the same tree again so I think I have a bit of a better idea of what to look out for now. I didn't have my camera on me so I couldn't take any pics. I could be wrong again though so I'll look at some more botanical info before I just to conclusions.
Thanks for the info about field guide to the native plants of sydney Ethos.
Does anyone have this PDF "Acacias of Australia"?

Thanks everyone for all your ideas. So many plants to look into. I would love to grow truffles, if only I was in the right climate.
I like DarkSpark's idea about salvaging natives from future developments. Agaves and Xanthorrhoea seem like good plants to grow considering the price they fetch plus they are natives. Is the commercial harvesting of protected plants certification a one off this or do you have to get one each time you remove natives?

jeez ! straight for the throat... phwoooh.
Sorry I don't get it? Did I do something wrong?

Does anyone know which plants are most profitable after the shortest amount of time growing that are legal? I was thinking of starting a small nursery in a few years time so I'd like to grow some plants from seedling now to give myself the best start.
I'd like to grow some rare and interesting plants but I don't know where to start. I have a greenhouse and some spare property I could turn into a small tree farm. Something like a Japanese maple would work well in a small tree farm if it grows in my climate well. Ideally I'd like to help revive a rare species and make some money from my investment. The more money I make the more I can put back into the plants.

You've got at least 3 different spp. labeled as obtusifolia that are clearly different from one another.
The "weird pods" in no. 6 are galls.

Yeah I was a bit hopeful that most of them were Obtusifolia. It looked a bit silly all of them being the same plant so I changed the post.
Sorry about the crappy pics. I had to borrow a camera spare of the moment.
Can anyone recommend either of these books for identifying Acacias;
Native Plants of the Sydney Region
Field Guide to the Native Plants of Sydney
Does Obtusifolia flower in December?
What should I be looking for to tell the Obtusifolia from the others. I thought Obtusifolia had a rounded leaf compared to longifolia with its pointed leaves. Next time I take some pics I'll make sure I get some clear close ups.

There's a good doco called "Other Worlds"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347718/
The shaman retreat they show on that seems pretty legit. I think this is it
How long are you planning on going for?

Thanks everyone who has helped me out with seeds so far. I'm still really interested in getting seeds for these plants;
Catha Edulis Red
Ephedra
Wasabia Japonica
Mimosa hostilis
Kava - Piper methysticum
and some Pereskiopsis plants

Hey mate I'd love a pack.

Thanks for the links mate. I had all of the seeds in my shopping cart ready to buy but I thought I'd see what the community had to offer first. I like the idea of trading seeds and plants with a good community of like minded people. Whatever seeds I can't get from other members I'll purchase.
Sorry but I don't have a lot to trade other than money. I'm trying to get a good collection of plants so I can then share some seeds and cuttings around. As soon as I have something decent I'll be happy to share with the people who have helped me.

I have that book but I haven't got around to reading it yet.
I would like some seeds too please :D

Does anyone have seeds for these plants?
Tabernanthe Iboga
Banisteriopsis Caapi
Psychotria viridis
Psychotria carthaginensis
Catha Edulis Red
Ephedra
Wasabia Japonica
Mimosa hostilis
Myrtillocactus
Silene Capensis
Milk Thistle - Silybum marianum
Kava - Piper methysticum
Nicotiana tabacum
Cactus seeds bridgesii, pachanoi, peruvianus etc.
Golden barrel cactus - Echinocactus grusonii
Ariocarpus
Cactus for grafting
Myrtillocactus
Pereskiopsis
How long do these cacti take to grow from seed? Could I grow either of these from seed at the same time as a trich or loph and still use it for grafting?
Can anyone recommend any other cacti, entheogenic or rare plants?

Does anyone use the "alkaStream" water filter?
http://www.alkaway.com.au/information-fluoride-removal.html
It seems to be the best product I've read about that removes fluoride. You can get one for $275 on ebay.

I'm looking to buy a decent size block larger than 5000m2 somewhere in Australia that has good all year round climate. I was thinking somewhere between Yamba, NSW and Mackay, QLD. Does anyone know of any cheap areas?

Risk vs Benefit.........The risks far outway the benefit. I don't see why we would invest in another fossil fuel when there are renewable alternatives.
Nuclear power plants might be safe, if run properly, but that isn't possible if profits are put before people. Power companies and mines abide by their own rules and their number one goal is to make as much profit as possible, with as little maitenance as possible. Once they're built they will be very hard to shut down.
We have the most polluting power station in the industrailized world and we cannot shut it down.
PDF - 100 Good Reasons Against Nuclear Power
Al Jazeera - People & Power - Danger Zone: Ageing Nuclear Reactors
Anyone who says mines don't leave a large footprint on the environment must not have worked in one. I know a lot of people who have worked both open cut and underground. None of them think it's clean and they all agree the environment is worse off since the mine was opened. It doesn't worry them though because if they don't do it someone else will. Why would you want $50,000 per year when you can earn $120,000 for 6 months of working. A lot of mines are kept open and run at a loss because if they close they will have to honor their environment lease and repair the land they damaged.
Here's an example of an Australian mining company not giving a fuck.

I've asked the vendor and he told me the seeds are from "Tucunaca" strain (sometimes written Tukunaca, or Tukunaka), but he also grows Caupuri (knotted caapi), and i grow them pretty close one of each other. The caupuri rarely set seeds, or when it does set seeds the quantity produced is very limited. So I have a mix but there should be a few Caupuri seeds or even hybrids of both, but most of the seeds will show Tucunaca characteristics.
