reason behind alkaloid content of plants

and what do you think would be stronger, a animals desire to eat or a humans desire to get high???

reason behind alkaloid content of plants

i went searching through some biochemistry books on secondary plant products today at uni and it seems many plants utilise the tryptophan, tryptamine pathway to store IAA. also the book had the pathway for mescaline production in the plant, will write it down and post it :D the higher production of chems in older plants would depend on whether they used them for storage or disposal. photosynthisis, transperation, production of secondary chems and plant growth would all increase as the plant got older. when i finish the books im reading now i might jump on this one and see how much i can digest before i fall asleep. currently got 2 weeks to read plants of the gods, soma the divine mushroom of immotality, wonderous mushroom, psilocybe mushrooms of the world, ethnobotany the study of a disapline, flesh of the gods and one on kava cultivars. anyway im pretty sure the research has been done and definetly doesnt point to alkaloids as defence mechanisms. another example to disproove this, back when kratom was legal i found the easyest way to get catipillars off it and they loved it was to shake the plant cos they were all so stoned they would just fall off and lay on the grass lol.

    Infinite Peyote?

apothecary, thats it how do you know the age limit when they never reach their full potential. some cacti grow for over 500 years. smogs, the idea behind the constant propergating of plants from cuttings of cuttings of cuttings etc doesnt seem to harm the plant and infact the more generations are grown from cuttings of cuttings etc the more readily they strike. there is that tree that budda sat under (bodi tree??) anyway they have been replacing it with cuttings taken from it when it dies. not sure how long this has been going on for. the main problem that im aware off with taking cuttings generation after generation is that it cuts down genetic diversity which means should disease come there all plants have same risistance be it high or low and no adaptation to the environment can occur through sexual propergation.

    want kratom rooted cuts

there is a reason you couldnt find any, there doesnt appear to be any around at the moment, well not in mainstream ethnogroups yet.

    Infinite Peyote?

i think they usually die due to carer before their age limit runs out.

reason behind alkaloid content of plants

quote: Then I reaslied DMT was on the IAA pathway. IAA is a naturally occurring auxin that stimulates- you guessed it- leaf size, root growth and internode length. i was thinking that last night aswell. which would be one reason they would store such complex structures, every step down would allow a different chemical to be used and then once broken down again it can again be used and so on. quite nifty really.

    rooting large/thick cuttings

i know your asking torsten but my belief is that moisture of any kind around the area where roots are wanted stimulates root growth(i swear i also said this, must be in another topic). so planting them in sand and watering stimulates the root growth, so does leaving them in a damp place to callus. IMHO there is no point to grow roots if there is no moisture to absorb. oh and moisture means moist not soaking wet.

reason behind alkaloid content of plants

thats a interesting theory about the piggy back genes. is mescaline considered a trait evolved by cacti or a trait cacti evolved from. a good example is lophophora, which one came first??? my bet would be on diffusa which has then evolved by its self and evolved a very different chemical structure, williamsii i believe would remain very similar to its previous from as the populations can readily interbreed. but im sure ms smith can fill us in more about that. the fact that not all plants contain alkaloids and that it would be expected that if they were used in storing products more would have them isnt nessesarily true, more new world plants contain them then old world plants yeah, this would point to them as a evolved feature. along way back if one line of plants developed this trait these days this could be evident in many families these days. evolution away from them could also occur. i like mssmiths theory which i will call the piggy back theory and i think this can be incorperated into the storage thoery. things other then alkaloids could be used to store nutrients aswell and im sure that they could be found in almost every plant. obviously mesc isnt made in the root but in the cells as a metabolite of photosynthisis. it could even be involved in photosynthisis which could be prooved by examining the percentage in the green layer under the skin, supposedly where all the mesc is anyway. mesc is obviously quite a stable molecule. unlike khats alkaloids (cathodine????) which are said to be destroyed by heat and light. in this case the plant could store minerals or even O2 or carbon which would be releases during the heat of the day which for both cacti and khat is extreme. i believe stoma close during the hottest parts of the day to conserve moisture. this also means CO2 and 02 induction is stopped so having molecules that are destroyed by heat would allow for stored CO2 and O2 that could be utilised during the day. a study done on pachanoi cuttings from the same parent grown in the same conditions but with different soil pH's would give details on which groups of minerals are required for mescaline production. also long growing seasons where the plant doesnt go dormant could test the theory that mesc builds up untill winter and then the plant utilises the nutrients. if the plant used mesc as a storage facility then i suspect that once mescaline reached a certian level the plant would stop producing it or use it whilst producing it, could produce differnt growth. where as if its a waste product then it would keep being made and would reach toxic levels at which the plant would haveto exibit some symptoms. now im sure many things here are incorrect and ive over looked somethings so someone please correct me.

    Ethnobotanical Office Plant

lol throw about 20 heimia seeds in a pot and then keep pruned and u will have a nice bush

    Ethnobotanical Office Plant

kratom wouldnt like it in there. have u got aircon??? i think psychotria viridis would be grand in there, providing it doesnt freeze. also areca catechu, betel nut palm would do well. morning glory would prolly do ok. heimia would prolly do ok. all will need a few hours outside every week. i will come up with some more later

    rooting large/thick cuttings

ive got a cutting rooting at the moment, thing is its just the smallest tip that i shaved off to do some grafts. its about 1cm high and 2cm wide and it was left on the ground for weeks and looked dried. so out of curiosity i put it in some sand and watered it, root has come out of the side :D i will take a pic its truly bizzare.

can our bufo marinus be used??? both contain glycocydes.

    Online Ethnobotanical Education Centre

quote: I'm sure you're right and growing conditions are quite different in the tropics to here in Sydney, but don't you think the best place to have different methods of growing is under a collaborative effort, rather than scattered randomly through forums in tidbits, etc? yeah i think it would be good but if everyone posts their growing teks it would be confusing for a beginner. im happy to write up about the plants i grow here and propergation of them.

    Online Ethnobotanical Education Centre

is it a website where people can post how they grow their plants of where research documents can be posted and stored. everyone grows their plants differently, im in the tropics so i grow different to people down south. i like the idea but i think it does need to be selected material only, eg someone posts a document and then peers review it and then they make required changes and its done. i love forums, great places to get info, only problem is its quite time consuming to search out info in them as the topics can be pages and pages long with many posts not saying anything. a summary of great topics would be good. i also think this is a chance if done right for australian ethnobotanists to show their skills and share information, books could be made. i can think of many many people here that are very knowledgable in many areas surrounding ethnobotany.

    LSA Extraction

hmm i shouldnt have said ergot. there was a post awhile ago by fractal saying that the lsa in seeds could be from a fungus. this will not nesserially mean unviable, symbiosis. but then it could also beproduced by the plant, im not backing either.

    kratom confusion

ok now im confused. now i could be wrong because as i said im confused. i thought that the strain sab was selling was the rifat strain, seed material was taken from tree with known psychoactivity and the only seedling was then cloned using tissue culture. but i read that locals only said less then 50% contain alkaloids. so does the sab strain contain these alkaloids??? should leaves be dried before using in a tea or can fresh ones be used. i would assume boiling with some added lemon juice is the way to go???? these are just questions and will not be practised as its illegal to do so......... silly tga

    TLC

can TLC be used to test purity of a chemical?? wouldnt a TLC that revealed 3 dots be less pure then one that contained one dot???
  21. teonanacatl

    TLC

my guess is it would come up as a series of dots close together where as other alkaloids would show up further away

    Whats up with Herbalistics?

its up again. sounds like a sign devils cactus, not open to get seeds from them = your not ready yet. go ahead and get the seeds, i will send u a bag full of datura seeds but i advise u plant them and grow them then once u know the plants and you feel ready you can try them, but always ask first.
  23. teonanacatl

    TLC

cool i was just thinking that alot of extraction questions could be solved by doing a few differnt ones then testing for purity or finding which one is more pure, eg lsa extraction. i remember doing chromatogrophy with smarties at school :D will read into it :D
