    How long can we survive?

Hmm... I've worked in eletrical or related fields for most of my working life. Just my point of view. I've got to say that a lot more research gets done into renewable power then people realise. I can say at least from what I've seen and heard, the government has wasted large sums of money on pointless solar power and other projects. I swear once at a western power workshop I saw a $1500 engine use a $150 fuel cell to power a small fan. Oh and wind power is a nightmare, it requires back up diesel generators running at idle in the background which is so ineffiecent that goes a long way to reducing any environmental benefit derived. Also wind power is loud as hell and is bad airline radar. I would really like to see renewable energy as the predominant source of energy, but doing things without the technology to back them up becomes a false economy. I hope someone proves me wrong but I think we are at least 10 years from seeing any actually sucessful power generation from renewable energy. Alot of people think there is no research being done on renewable energy because they see so little success come from it but unfortunatly the failure not from lack of trying. Torsten: I don't mean to be rude here. But I really can't see how you can say there's no need for any house to be on the grid. I'm just honestly interested in where this statement comes from. I can't see how power would be stored in the individual house. Would we have large flywheels in peoples basements or capacitor/invertor banks. Or do you mean people should go without things like electric lighting at night. Personally I wouldn't trust the government with atoaster or anything more complicated. But coal kills people in mining, it generates large amounts of radiation and creates a waste product. Really the coal power station is a big old dinosaur that spews forth a constant stream of noxious clouds. Nuclear power doesn't seem nearly as bad to me.

    ethnos for hard labor

As was mentioned earlier I think khat is pretty good for physical labor. When I was shovelling a huge pile of sand, chewing khat helped SWIM quite a bit. I'd say dexamphetamine, ephedrine or pseudoephedrine would be pretty good for a short term needs. Betel nuts used to help me a bit at one point but since I didn't keep using it, it musn't have helped too much. On the side note previously discussed in this topic, I've heard some islanders don't bother with the betle leafs or lime, traditionally. I found white tea or yerba mate helpful in the mornings. To me though it was always better to do something to calm the muscles in the evenings. Otherwise I just felt my muscles getting tighter and tighter and everything got more difficult. I used to work in a factory doing physical labor and drug taking seemed to be the norm. I remember there was this guy, who took meth and always did everything faster and better then anyone else. Except he overdid things a bit and I used to watch him come into work, jittery and paranoid. Then he would start popping valiums to, "calm himself down" in his own words. [ 19. coca seeds/plant wanted study only

Wow liveby Sending something that illegal to an abandoned house is pointless. If they catch the package of something that illegal they will just survey the house. You think your throwing them off track but your just setting up a Mens Rea. My advice would be to wait until you reach the age of twelve and then seeing how you feel about it.

    How long can we survive?

Wow, I think I'm only one who feels this impending doom stuff is pretty much bullshit. I mean I'm not saying there is no chance that we all won't die tomorrow but its a small chance. I mean nuclear war was far more likely fifty years ago then it is now. So was widespread biological warfare. I mean humans have had the ability to quickly and eliminate most of an enemy populace since world war 1(poison gas). So frankly I think the chance of any true apolyptic world war is smaller then its been for a long time. Also while pollution is a problem, its a problem that in my opinion is greatly exaggerated. I think pollution will slowly lower the quality of life for people around the world but a cataclysmic destruction happening in the blink of an eye in such a "human" idea that it makes me laugh. If anything major happens it'll be slow enough to stop or at least get ready for. I think governments around the world encourage this "world is going to end" syndrome. What better way to stop people trying to better their current circumstance then to tell them the world is going to end tommorrow. People might grumble a bit but who truly thinks they can save the world? So they will give in and just exist from moment to moment in what is really a comforting beleif that the world is going to end anyway. [ 18. June 2005, 09:11: Message edited by: Benzedrine ]

    Awkward Moments at Work

Hmm it could be when a female coworker who spoke bad english, asked me the meaning of the word "pussywhipped". She didn't understand my carefully thought out and toned down reply, so she asked me to draw a picture. But it was far worse when I quit a job and after one hell of an argument with my bosses. I walked downstairs to the labratory I worked in and shook hands with my various co-workers. After a little while one of the women I'd worked with started to cry. It was insanely awkward, I hadn't expected it and had no idea what to do. And with each second that I did nothing the lab seemed to only to get quieter and my situation more awkward. In the end I did nothing, I sat and looked away and so did everyone else. This made it much worse, you really can't do any work while someone next to you is crying. I couldn't really go back either as the window of comforting her was sort of closed the minute I sat down. God that was awful...

    xtreme herbs..anyone dealt with them?

Notice how they list the manufacterer of nearly all their products as MedGar. Medecine Garden ... methinks. Also on their homepage in shows rows of packets with what looks like the familiar orange medicine garden logo. Don't know about how reputable a reseller they are though.

    Paraphenalia, planes, and paranoia

I don't think its a problem if its metal, I'd just heat it under a spirit lamp and wash it thoroughly with alcohol. I always used to put paraphenalia with pipe tobacco, to give it a legitimate excuse. Saying your trying to quit smoking by switching to a pipe makes a good cover story.

    Australian Commercial Tobacco

I know British American Tobacco Australia use tobacco grown from farming cooperatives in victoria. I think domesticly grown tobacco makes up a fairly large portion of domestic cigarettes. Tobacco grows in poor soil so its a pretty attractive crop for some farmers. Personally though I doubt tobacco grown here holds a candle to the stuff overseas so its probably a price issue to how much is imported to grown locally.

    The illegal plants of australia

Is it really illegal to grow tobacco? I mean in a community garden nearby me, there is large tobacco plant facing out onto a walkway. Its clearly labelled as virginian tobacco and I've seen police officers walk by it. If its illegal to grow then I don't know what you would have to do to get busted.

    Nutmeg rocks my world

The muscle activity relation's to effects really interest me. Now for something truly embarassing. When I was young there was a recipe that I still partially remember. It involved huge amounts of sugar, coffee and nutmeg mixed with water into a thick stew. Afterwards bread was dipped into it and then cooked in a microwave. This would in slabs of a foul smelling brown sponge. The taste and texture made it very difficult to get down. This incredibly dodgy stuff was often a surprisingly enjoyable intoxicant. Much better then nutmeg on its own, I wonder now if the large amount of sugar and coffee were just to boost body activity.

    Aptenia Kana?

I've done sceletium ferments a few times. I never use roots, it always seems wasteful to me. I take cuttings from around the entire plant and leave behind just a central shrub. The plant grows back pretty quickly this way, even with a brutal harvest. I used to bother with bruisin but the last ferment was done without it and I have noticed no discernable difference. Literally I just cut of branchs, give them a quick wash and throw them in a sealed plastic bag. I stir daily and have never failed to make a good product. So I can vouch for a worse prep getting the goods, if it'll work for aptenia is another matter. Shouldn't the product be the same just much weaker? [ 04. Execution styles ?

Gee firing squad would suck. In america they used to get a doctor to find someone heart and put a red target there. So the bullet would rupture the heart and cause almost instant death. If they don't do this though, chances are good your actually gonna die from slowly bleeding to death from countless bullet wounds. Drowning like they did to witches seems like the best way to me. Death from drowning is dreamlike and it would be great to go out like a sorceror.

    cooked or raw opium ?

Nabraxas: First off I never said that opium smokers would be "fooled" into smoking black tar heroin. Its just that its widely available and opium no longer is. Also its easier to ship and it has a better rush. By modern way I just meant a morphine or codeine extraction, I should of explained that better. Well I have to disagree with you about the opium smell thing. Any worthwhile amount of opium is gonna stink in my experience. I don't know where this smoking uncooked thing is coming from. Yeah screw purification why drink vodka when you can drink the dirty mash of potatoes that comes before. Hell why drink cider when you can just wait for apples to rot and ferment on the tree and eat them. I mean why buy that expensive petrol when a car can probably thump along on crude, at least for a little while. Stolen from http://opioids.com/jh/ "Before opium is smoked, it is usually 'cooked'. Uncooked opium contains moisture, as well as soil, leaves, twigs, and other impurities which diminish the quality of the final product. The raw opium collected from the opium poppy pods is placed in an open cooking pot of boiling water where the sticky globs of opium alkaloids quickly dissolve. Soil, twigs, plant scrapings, etc., remain undissolved. The solution is then strained through cheesecloth to remove these impurities. The clear brown liquid that remains is opium in solution, sometimes called 'liquid opium'. This liquid is then re-heated over a low flame until the water is driven off into the air as steam leaving a thick dark brown paste. This paste is called 'prepared', 'cooked', or 'smoking' opium. It is dried in the sun until it has a putty-like consistency. The net weight of the cooked opium is generally only eighty percent that of the original raw opium. Thus, cooked opium is more pure than its original, raw form, and has a higher monetary value." Thats one way of doing it. 2B: Ahhh but the removal of the water content and dirt , allows a far more efficient smoke. Its like trying to smoke soggy waterlogged weed. [ 29. cooked or raw opium ?

Of course no one here does anything illegal, But in countries were this sort of thing is done. First of when dealing with mass quatities its generally purified with ammonium nitrate(I think) before anything is done with it. That gets about 20% waste off straight away. After that it would be sold to the local populace in that form or manufactured into heroin for ease of shipping. If they needed to sell it to opium houses (Chandries and such) they would sell it as impure black tar heroin. If however some "criminals" had just a few bulbs, they would definately not bother cooking it and would just settle with opium tea. Personally I'd theorise that cooked opium would be much better then raw as this was definately preferred in the 19th century. It kept an asian population in england at the time busy, they cooked raw opium into pure balls that could be put into traditional opium pipes. Anyone at the time could buy opium from an apothecary but few westerners knew how to cook it. The uncooked stuff is probably the reason some modern experimenters snort at the stuff, it would be difficult to smoke effiecntly unprepared. Also if a "criminal" was going cook, I'd definately advise against the modern way is dangerous for the unskilled and the traditional way will leave said "criminal" stinking of opium. I'm talking time over a frying pan here, I'd theorise that this scent is gonna stay in the hair for a while. Keep in mind this highly illegal.

    Vego kids unethical ?

Gee ... I'm beginning to dislike this modern popular science. These days they seem to research anything popular and manufacture a hypothesis that sells. The turning of research into an industry is reducing Science to a cheap assortment of soapboxs and advertisements. Every scientist these days seems to have shout out non-existant contraversies just make enough to fund the next tacky endeavor they undertake. I totally agree with the above mentioned "scientists don't decide ethics" opinion. Why not look at the full story though since red meat causes cancer there are a lot more downsides indeed to feeding children meat then are really presented. Also when we talk of slight negatives there talking about a far more exhaustive study indeed is really required to such a definitive judgement, whose to say that there aren't other benifits that such an exclusive study simply misses altogether. Also who is to what is a natural diet for humans, since historical eskimos survived almost wholy off of meat while some cultures would have had very little access to some types of meat especially island dwellers. Parts of the digestive system are thought to have evolved even in the last thousand years, especially the liver. So I think our natural diet is far closer to what we eat today then what was eaten ten thousand years ago.

    Ethnobotanical Office Plant

Probably not what your looking for but I grew a couple of valerian plants of an office desk, they never seemed unhappy about it. Actually a pretty good plant for improving the look of an office desk to boot ... if you going for a jungle look.

    Bhutan Bans Smoking

Wow if we were to change premiums and tax law around the social responsibilty of goods, things would get pretty strange. I mean surely a big mac would get hit with excise but does this also mean that vegetarians should get tax breaks. Also this seems to be a strange interpretation of the reasons for tax. I mean I don't have a mental illness so why should i pay for mental health (/sarcasm). It makes just about as much sense as whats been said. This would lead to some interesting situations, should gun owners have to pay as much tax for army and police since they are in less need of such forces. Maybe I don't have any children why do I pay for education, I haven't made the decision to have children. Also since there some show that some pipe smokers and cigar smokers live longer then the general population so should give them tax breaks while giving huge excise to cigarettes.
  18. It's a funny paradox to me that if cut it up and get rid of it or even uproot it now. You'll be in possession of an illegal substance so really the way I see it the only way to stop yourself from commiting a crime in the future is to commit a crime in the present.

    nsw+drug testing

To me the introduction of these tests just shows how accepting of a police state we have become. I mean why should the police have the right to test free citizens for drugs or alcohol without probable cause. To me this a search without a warrant. If the police are allowed to take up someones time with random tests because we may or may not be guilty of something. To me this is the sort of thing that designates us prisoners since birth just because we were unlucky enough to be citizens of this land of seizures without convictions and jail without a judge. Oh and the rich will get away with it, the police aren't gonna pull over many mercedes or limos and do "random" drug tests.

    Gnomes and Buzz powder

I really think that your using way too little at a time if you can't snort the amount required. You see your probably lowering the amount your trying to line or pinch up your nose to try and reduce pain. And lowering the amount is a big mistake when snorting as it actually makes it hurt more and requires more snorts to get the same effect. That being said about the mechanics of snorting don't do too much scell. Things got nasty when I accidentally smoked too much homemade sceletium.

    Kratom?

quote: I think that hysteria is a bit over dramatic Why mindlessly quibble over a definition? quote: So you're asking that I try sending up a series of red flags in a conversation and not get a response? No, but if you were to say "I'm going to watch more T.V." or "I'm gonna gamble at the casino every weekend". Then you would not get the same reaction and yet these are also addictions. I personally knew people who have killed themselves over gambling and I know a woman who got fat watching TV, her self esteem lowered and eventually she commited self mutilation and ended up hanging herself in a psych ward. All addictions are fairly similar. Yet I know someone who smoked crack cocaine every weekend for a long time but they kept a good job and never felt any truly ill effects from it. I personally used opiates for a long time, long ago and while not all the places they took me were "glamorous". Sometimes I miss the lifestyle and mindset they allowed. If I look back opiate addiction was probably a good thing for the time I took them. I wonder how many other people have used seriously taboo narcotics some time in their life and had very little problems quitting and leaving them behind. None of us can ever admit it or share any of it because its embarassing and the reactions would be hysterical. quote: Asian Invasion? I almost shudder to think where that phrase came from... First off I'm not talking about genetic changes in population I think we can all agree that has nothing to do with this. I meant cultural changes in the population are causing views on average to swing against legalisation.
  23. Benzedrine

    Kratom?

I think it can cause hysteria quite easily, look at TV reports. It would have to cause mass hysteria for it be almost totally accepted that someone can go to jail for twenty years just for being in possession of narcotics. Try telling some straight surburbanite you know "hey I've decided to start using heroin" and watch the hysteria begin. I think its actually getting worse in Australia because of the asian invasion since 90% of them seem to believe in singapore style death penalties. Miseducation is a powerful tool in my opinion so that no group can ever really make big steps towards legalisation. All modern people generally have a set of preprogrammed answers from TV that make it almost impossible for many people to ever be convinced because no argument is well crafted enough to beat hours of televised brainwashing. I mean many of the people I work with believe in the death penalty for drug possession, discussion is pointless with such people.
  24. Benzedrine

    Kratom?

I think the drug wars more about a mass hysteria about one subject that tends to grip a society and stay a taboo subject for around 50+ years. Like sex was to victorian society, now it is narcotics that have become an absolute phobia. I think saddest thing is the undereducation that government sponsered narcophobia is causing.
