nice plants ferret! that last one could be Trichocereus knuthianus...? the only other place i've something like this is at the tazzie botanic gardens, and thats what their label said! tho, i wouldn't take this ID too seriously, as they had a beautiful big bridgesii clearly labeled as Cereus peruvianus????!!!

i had some similar damage to a few of my own plants over last winter. i came to the, as yet unproven conclussion that it was due to frost damage, most likely from moisture pooling around the tip and freezing over night. could be the same in your case maybe...? all affected plants have continued to grow happliy, just left with a few ugly scars...

your right, it'll be the "-" in combination with another character creating some kind of switch or escape case... i'll dick around with it and see what the fatal combination(s) was and report back here... having said that, it has to be the "-"... it was the only thing i changed before it worked...

I keep getting this error when I try to send PMs... I've tried it on my machine at work and at home...same results. Is this a problem at my end or not? anyone have any idea what might be causing this? Appologies if this has been discussed before or if its an obvious fix...

Hey Torsten, I deleted all the cookies and fired off a couple of test Pm's with success (as you well know)...but the original message i was having problems with is still refusing to send??? Maybe the message is too long or i used illegal characters or something...i really don't get it. Is there a maximum size for Pm's? This one that I'm wrestling with was only 100-200 words!? sorry for the time waster....and cheers for your help!

wow, some really cool pics there! i dont think i'll be able to top those, but i'll contribute non the less! here is a top down photo of my Azureocereus hertlingianus, mentioned previously by rev...this ones for you mate... (btw, that matucana looks familiar) personally, I've always liked the look of these guys... Astrophytum asterias, this is a pic of one of my babies. Not as psychedelic looking as some of the above mentioned plants, but very striking in its own way... Anyway, enough cacti... I've also find the way some types of ferns develope quite trippy, reminds me a bit of those swirling fractal images

I never knew Aaron, but my condolences to those who did. This entire thread is a testament to his good character. He sounds like a wonderful and open person, I'm sure he will be missed by those who were close to him...

eewwww....sick lookin` you could possibly salvage this by grafting the top section, as long as the core has not rotted. also, that elongated, almost columnar growth probably means it wasn't getting enough light where it was. the rot looks like it was caused by poor drainage. i would increase the sand content by quite a bit. some one here may have a better idea but i would leave it bare rooted long enough for the mid section to dry out. When repotting, only have the roots (bottom 3rd of the plant) covered by the soil. top the rest of the pot up with a free draining pebble mix (0.5-1 cm pebble size). the pebbles at the top will allow the water to drain down to the roots and keep the rest of the plant mostly dry, avoiding further rot. remember not to water for at least a week (maybe more) after repotting. hope he pulls through... -
