  1. nice plants ferret!

that last one could be Trichocereus knuthianus...? the only other place i've something like this is at the tazzie botanic gardens, and thats what their label said!

tho, i wouldn't take this ID too seriously, as they had a beautiful big bridgesii clearly labeled as Cereus peruvianus????!!!

  2. i had some similar damage to a few of my own plants over last winter. i came to the, as yet unproven conclussion that it was due to frost damage, most likely from moisture pooling around the tip and freezing over night. could be the same in your case maybe...?

all affected plants have continued to grow happliy, just left with a few ugly scars...

  3. my apologies again vfx, damn computers

seriously, no need to appologise! you were kind enough to offer in the first place...

if anyone is willing to oblidge...i've got plenty of ethno and non-ethno related docos I can pass on in return.

  4. your right, it'll be the "-" in combination with another character creating some kind of switch or escape case... i'll dick around with it and see what the fatal combination(s) was and report back here...

having said that, it has to be the "-"... it was the only thing i changed before it worked...

  5. Hey Torsten,

I deleted all the cookies and fired off a couple of test Pm's with success (as you well know)...but the original message i was having problems with is still refusing to send??? :ana: Maybe the message is too long or i used illegal characters or something...i really don't get it. Is there a maximum size for Pm's? This one that I'm wrestling with was only 100-200 words!?

sorry for the time waster....and cheers for your help!

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Apache/1.3.33 Server at www.shaman-australis.com Port 80

I keep getting this error when I try to send PMs... I've tried it on my machine at work and at home...same results. Is this a problem at my end or not? anyone have any idea what might be causing this?

Appologies if this has been discussed before or if its an obvious fix...

  7. wow, some really cool pics there! i dont think i'll be able to top those, but i'll contribute non the less!

Astrophytum asterias, this is a pic of one of my babies. Not as psychedelic looking as some of the above mentioned plants, but very striking in its own way...

    Anyway, enough cacti...

I've also find the way some types of ferns develope quite trippy, reminds me a bit of those swirling fractal images

  8. For any of you queenslanders interested in fungi...this may be of some interest.

My GF sent me this today, thought I'd just pass it on!!

    Dear all,

Fungi enthusiasts and experts plan to 'lift the gills' on the intriguing but neglected world of macrofungi:

    FUNGI CONFERENCE

    Saturday, 5 November 2005

    Undumbi Room/Parliament House

Parliamentary Annexe, Cnr George/Alice Streets, Brisbane

The conference is organised by the Cubberla-Witton Catchments Network (CWCN). According to participating mycologists an event on higher fungi of this quality and scope is a first for Queensland. Its importance cannot be stressed enough, especially as a repeat is not likely to happen soon.

The conference will give an exceptional opportunity to learn about the important contribution of fungi to biodiversity and their essential role in bushland ecology. Few of us know that our gum trees and other plants cannot survive without the beneficial fungal partnerships via their roots; that fungi are a critical(!) food source for many small mammals, invertebrates and reptiles; that life on earth would come to a standstill within 60 to 80 years without fungi; that Australia has many more macrofungi than plants, that of the estimated 20,000 to 25,000 species barely a quarter has been described, that....

The speakers are specialists in their field, their professional recognition extends internationally. They come from Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and will highlight topics of interest to researchers, educators, bush regenerators, and naturalists.

The $50 fee (Early Bird $45 extended until 15 Oct) includes morning and afternoon tea as well as lunch, and is quite without comparison considering the quality of the event. Booking is essential. And don't forget the BBQ reception after the conference.

More information including a selection of abstracts can be obtained from http://www.cubberlawitton.org/conference ( please click on this link). Please ring Jutta Godwin (3378 1929 or 0407 583 441) or Lois Eden (0407 769 569) or email at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> if you have any questions re conference.

Parking is limited at the venue, but there is a carpark close-by at Cnr Margaret/Albert Streets (entry Margaret Street) for $7.00 all day including evening. Otherwise, use the Citycat to GardensPoint or walk from Roma Street Train Station or the Bus Terminal in Queen Street Mall.

Don't miss this unique opportunity. Register for the conference.

  10. eewwww....sick lookin`

you could possibly salvage this by grafting the top section, as long as the core has not rotted.

also, that elongated, almost columnar growth probably means it wasn't getting enough light where it was.

the rot looks like it was caused by poor drainage. i would increase the sand content by quite a bit.

some one here may have a better idea but i would leave it bare rooted long enough for the mid section to dry out. When repotting, only have the roots (bottom 3rd of the plant) covered by the soil. top the rest of the pot up with a free draining pebble mix (0.5-1 cm pebble size). the pebbles at the top will allow the water to drain down to the roots and keep the rest of the plant mostly dry, avoiding further rot. remember not to water for at least a week (maybe more) after repotting.

    hope he pulls through...

  11. Just another quick endorsement for these guys...

Very generous, very cool people! Plants were extremely healthy and delivered to my door personally, only because i happen to live a few minutes away...!

But yeah, would not hesitate to order from these guys again. Thanks again guys.

  12. music and dance are as much a psychedelic as anything else you might have been effected by that night...atleast by my definition of psychedelics. I have never been more transformed than when i am weaving my body around, through and into the beats and rhythms pumping forward. one of my most vivid memories is of seemingly, harnessing, holding parts of the music and using them to construct around me this organic machine or vehicle that would ultimately propel me to some other level of existance. hmmm...that was nice!

sound like you had a blast. :D

  13. electro,

I can see what your getting at, alcohol definitely doesnt 'force' anyone to do anything. Its essentially the underlying violent tendencies that causes violence.

But, as you've said yourself, alcohol inhibits inhibitions. It disintergrating impulse control, therefore making it much easier for violence/abusive behaviour to come to surface.

This, in my mind, qualifies as indirect cause!

  14. i got a mini greenhouse (2m tall, 1m wide, 1m deep) for my plants earlier this year. I got it from kmart in chatswood (NSW), I think it was about $70. Its great...got shelves and is big enough so you can get inside to check things out. I had considered getting another for growing my favourite fungi. so yeah, if your interested, check out the gardening sections of your local kmarts, bigWs or anywhere else that is likely to carry such items.

    best of luck!
