Australia's Naughty Plants & The official gardening tips thread
Shroom-Aura replied to Happy Cadaver's topic in Ethnobotany
by legal loophole I meant that while its illegal to have the actual mushroom the spore prints are legal because they do not have scheduled substances. unlike say cannabis in which the seeds are also illegal. the difference between cultivating mescaline containing cacti and psilocybin containing mushrooms is that growing cacti is completely legal if you do not intend to consume. whilst i heard that people have been charged just for importing spore syringes because of 'intent to cultivate'. i see your point though in actual fact there is no difference -

by legal loophole I meant it is legal. if you are caught with cultivating psilocybin containing mushrooms I dont think it would matter whether it was for ornamental purposes or not you would most likely still be charged. -
yeah Jack is right. post in about March or April and many people here will be able to help you out. otherwise there is www.earthpod.org , not sure if they have any Amanita prints in stock but i think it would probably be quicker to wait for season.

Not just cubensis but all species of the Psilocybe, Panaeolus, Copelandia, Gymnopilus, etc genus's that contain Psilocin, Psilocybin or Baeocystin are illegal to cultivate or have fresh or dried specimens in possesion. spores are a "legal loophole" as they do not contain any of illegal compounds. Amanita pantheria and A. muscaria are illegal to posses and cultivate. btw i didnt research this just picked it up from the forums -
I would like some poppy seeds of either the Tasmanian or Gigantium(??) strains. pm me to organise a trade

the beauty of agar though, is if youre plate has some contamination on it you can just transfer it aseptically to a new sterile plate. if contamination shows up again just continue to re-isolate the mycelium to new plates and the contaminations will disappear (if youre technique was aseptic.) and you will have a pure culture. I havent yet had any contamination problems when using agar in my uncarpeted study (no glovebox) at home

thanks people I reckon Im alright now though, no more offers please

came across this site not long ago http://www.fungiperth.org.au/fieldbook/Catalogue1.html have a look at picture number 11 the dusky helmuts. Identified as Panaeolus fimicola (also known as P. ater) which is weak when active, but IMO these look more like P. subbalteatus which is more potent and always active. Eitherway these might be worth hunting in WA especially since the sub patches are policed well and probably no longer fruiting.
-
Panaeolus campanulatus is synonymous with P. papilionaeceus. IMO its probably just another Paneolus only suspected of being psychoactive like P. antilarium and foenisecii. Although it is possible that one mushroom species in different areas may differ in edibility e.g something that is poisonous here may be perfectly safe to eat when grown and picked overseas. Stamets reported eating 30 fresh specimens with no effects. IMO If this species was active it would of been confirmed by now because of how common it is. Also just more speculation but maybe reports of it being active could have been false because dried Panaeoli look very similair and this species cap fissures with age like P. cyanescens. Obviously there is no harm in finding out for yourself (because its not poisonous) as long as you are 100% certain of the identity.

Was the garden fertelised? What is cotoneaster and kikuyu some kinds of plants i presume? Would it be possible to give a more specific location (suburb or something) so that the Perth locals would be able to benefit from youre discovery? Wow you are quite the pan hunter rev! Did you find Panaeolus fimicola, subbalteatus and cyanescens all in Perth?
-
Not pines or bushland. It grows on dung so check cow/horse pastures or horse stables, horse riding trails, etc. Paul Stamets book says "Growing scattered in soil or dung from late spring and in the fall. Sometimes found in well fertelised lawns and/or grassy places in the woods." definately, the bluing of those giant G. cyanescens is spectacular. Wrong place to post that this forum is for mushroom related discussion. The seed and plant exchange forum is for buying and trading.

dont you mean sheep pastures?

hey bm antillarium is the hysteria fungus, does that have something to do with the serotonin? i dont like to eat large amounts of any kind of mushrooms let alone unpalatable ants and i could only find less then ten in my "field". heres some pics today of almost fresh specimens (cracked caps) found metres away from the previous ones. these look a lot more antillariumlike to me.

Found my first Panaeolus (i assume) species last week. The black spores around the stem where the veil was means they have to be Panaeolus. However these specimens were fairly dry and difficult (for me) to identify. According to Paul Statmets book P. papilionaceus, P. campanulatus, P. sphinctrinus and P. retirugis are synonymous. However these lack the toothlike remenants of veil that are disctinctive of this species. So anyone know what species i found? And if its a good indicator of psilocybin producing species being in the area

Unfortunately there were no younger specimens the only ones I found were these. Yeah I think you are right EG they are probably antillarium. Maybe the gills go darker as it ages/gets weather beaten, like the blotches on the cap. I didn't take any home to spore print (too dry??) but the print would no doubt be black, you can see a black spore deposit around the top of the stem in the second photo. Next time I'll hopefully find some fresher specimens to make id-ing easier.

hey Blue if you have access to a camera you should take some in-situ shots. would be great to finally see some australian semilanceata pics.

most if not all labs use a solution of 70% ethanol and 30% water for general sterlisation of bench tops, etc. the 30% water is needed to allow the alcohol to most effectively pass through the cell membranes. watered down methylated spirits will work (generally has a >95% ethanol content), but if you want isopropanol diggers sell it 100% concentration. sodium carbonate (NaCO3??) can be used as a base instead of NaOH. sold in hardware store in pool supply section as soda ash to up the pH of your pool.
