    now official

Its listed as non active to weakly active in Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World. However Panaeolina foeinscii is right next to it which is also non active to weakly active. The photo of fimicola in the book seems to show a little bit of blue on the base of the stem, so at least some specimens must be active. Only one way to be sure though If i lived in Perth I would contact the PUBF field book authors to find out exactly where they were found. hey bm what do u think of this http://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/dbpages/fungi/ca...ls.php3?id=2402 http://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/dbpages/fungi/ca...ls.php3?id=2405 it suggests that Psilocybe tasmaniana is synonymous with P. subaeruginosa along with P. australiana and P. eucalypta. I assume that you dont agree with it?

wow those shrooms are large and extremely cespitose! you would never see that here in Adelaide. its photos like that which make me hate melbourne !!

    have a good one mate!

I would recommend a better book, one that at least has a description of subs. Bruce Fuhrer's field guide has one small fairly useless paragraph and a photo of subs (thousands of which can be found on the netanyway). btw the mushroom you thought might be subs, i have to agree that that cap texture is very wrong - should be smooth.

    Spotty Subs

i agree with Phleb i think it is caused by insect damage in young specimens which looks like that when the caps go hygorphanous. I often see that sort of damage on subaes but nowhere near that much

    Agar questions.

Im not resident expert but I did pass a course in Aseptic Technique (bacteria culturing on agar not at all disimilair to fungi culturing) as part of a TAFE certificate. It is very easy and simple. I have even done a few mushroom (cubes) plates at home always without a glovebox and without any contamination. Agar can lasts ages before becoming unusable. After about 6 months of fairly poor storage the agar in my cube cultures looked a bit ragged and probably unusable. It will not contaminate if left in the light, contamination can only get to the plate by physical means. And yes it is better to store the plates upside down, as you said the condensation that builds up on the top wont drip down on ur culture and possibly contaminate it if they are upside down. In the lab they seal plates with parrafilm to prevent contamination while still allowing gas exchange. I have used saran wrap with similar results.

    Any finds in aussie yet?

the first photo all look like subs to me and i can see bluing in about 3. check all of them for bluing though before eating. the second pic looks more like a gymnopilus than a sub to me and it seems to be showing blue as well but of course Im not certain do not eat it. what habitat did you find the second photo ones in? oh and congrats on your first sub find!

    Any finds in aussie yet?

Ill definately have to check that place out if Im ever in the area. That is a good call on the gills, it looks like the immature specimens have light colour gills at first which darken with maturity. My field guide does not describe this feature but it may not of been noticed at the time of recording the specimens. If the mushrooms you found had that little purple stained ring that you can see in the mature specimens in the your photo then that means they have a purple sporeprint. If that was the case then I would say that would pretty much confirm the identity because the only mushrooms with purple sporeprints that look like that are Psilocybe and Stropharia. Of course it could also be Psilocybe coprophila but these are usually pretty small and no other type of mushroom grows on horse manure around the Adelaide area (i havent seen any on horse dung only cow but apparently those Stropharia are really common on horse dung).

very cool! those are electron microscope shots yeah? what are your magnifications?

here is the bigger version but its still too blurry to tell. a bit of a description and sporeprint would help. If you didnt say that they had white gills I would say Stropharia semiglobata as a wild guess. btw if you dont mind saying, where exactly did you find them? unfortunately there arent too many places we get dunglovers here

    A little sub story

congrats! having subs in your own backyard is every australian shroomer's dream

Brown capped pan with darkbrown/black margins?

someone correct me if im wrong but I think all mushrooms of the Panaeolus genus have a black sporeprint. if that is true then you must have a Panaeolina foeinscii

    Found a bluing Gymnopilus

nice! definately not a spectabilis, they don't bruise blue.
  15. Shroom-Aura

    Little Brown Mushies

yeah i'd agree with that. It looks a lot like antillarium, whats the diameter of the cap? 3-4cm?

    Coprinus comatus/shaggymane psychoactivity

did you have any alcohol after you ate the manes? Ive heard that mushrooms can concentrate toxins in their environment so the only other thing I can think of is that maybe you picked them from a polluted area? this guy I know found subs growing near fox baits and when he ate them got 'tunnel vision', lol!

    P. subaeruginosa in Adelaide suburbs

thanks for the tip foolsbreath! I definately have to check that one out. Id rather live in a subtropical climate myself, to have the opportunity to hunt Copelandias and Cubes. You just have to remember our long and very hot, dry summers and you won't want to come back.

    P. subaeruginosa in Adelaide suburbs

a little fyi for Adelaide hunters - check surburban woodchip beds, you do not need to drive to the hills to find subs. A small cluster of about 11 subs was found today in the Payneham area. I pretty much ignored surburban woodchip beds in my first two years of hunting because the conditions did not seem right in the city. This suburban patch has come up before most of our hill patches somehow. So yeah its worth a look.

hey MOSES, that is a pretty good guess actually. They looked kinda like foes to me but the spore print was black. so im gonna agree with that. i probably should of posted it in a new thread though it looks like i hijacked part of bluemeanie's thread off topic, sorry.

    Pans in broome?

^cool photo I wouldnt be surprised if there are subbalts in WA, another site reported fimicola which is a very similair mushroom in appeareance to subbalts, but I think they are lower in potency.

    Any finds in aussie yet?

some typical run of the mill subs there ballzac. yeah i was surprised to seem them this early too. and they are not just fruiting from the place that retains the most moisture. we found these today south-east at a high elevation where water isnt retained very well and there is a lot of exposure to the sun and elements.

nice finds everyone. The south australian season has started too, today I found my first sub of the season, my brother found a couple pins and three matures. heres a photo also checked out a nearby forest and found some kind of Panaeolus growing from cow dung anyone care to take a stab at it's identity?

    locations of active mushroom species

location of a copelandia found off the mainland Copelandia the location of bluemeanies in north Northern Territory Copelandia cyanescens this Gymnopilus is aka G. spectabilis Gymnopilus pampeanus heres the location of an active pan that no australian shroomer actively seeks out, found in vic Panaeolus fimicola if newbie hunters, or anyone else is having trouble finding subs in victoria, this page shows 4 locations. Psilocybe subaeruginosa

Grow your own Mario 1up mushrooms

that is really cool - I want one! I love the pipe pot too. I wonder how come the green colour from the dye doesnt show up in the white circles on the cap. those two black lines on the stem must be drawn on or something. you could add red dye instead of green and have the mushroom that makes mario get bigger.

    locations of active mushroom species

Panaeolus fimicola is synonymous with Panaeolus ater. Is my geography really that bad? It looked like the north border of vic to me. I posted a link to a site a while back which was called the perth urban bushland fungi website, which had P. fimicola listed as being found in Perth, so I don't think that it's impossible for it to grow in temperate climates like vic. Do you have a reference for P. fimicola/ater growing in NSW or QLD? I don't think the map is meant to indicate the full geographical distribution, I think it just indicates locations of reported finds. Yes we do have many Gymnopilus species, this database lists 11 other species, but I'm pretty sure we get spectabilis as well (which I beleive is inactive in some collections). Tony Youngs latest field guide has Gymnopilus junonious (synonymous with G. spectabilis) listed as growing in SA, NSW, QLD and VIC. It also says that in early literature G. junonious was reffered to as G. pampeanus. And yes I know we get G. purpuratus but these were the only active mushrooms listed in the database, if it was there I would of included it.
