Any idea why species of Archidendron, which are native to subtropical rainforests on the east coast, have sap which smells like onions and cat piss?? i was repotting some a few weeks ago and the disturbed roots smelt pretty strongly. any idea what the substances would be??

I was reading in an environmental chemistry book that the breakdown of steroids in the body gives shit its characteristic smell. not being a good chemist, does this include tryptophan, etc??
so this plant could contain some nasty steroids i spose???

sounds like Phalaris. causes the staggers in sheep when they eat a fair bit of it. due to the alkaoids present (DMT, etc).

Milkbush is a rare plant, in the Apocynaceae, which occurs north in subtropical rainforest from alstonville, NSW. has fruit that looks similar to the australian tabernaemontana. Must have some interesting stuff in it i think.

Matey, we've got it all
There's also a native strychnine tree. Presumably contains strychnine. Strychnos axillaris.
The Quinine Bush (Alstonia constricta), don't know if that has a brother or sister in south america.
Do you know the Milkbush (Neiosperma poweri) Ed?

Maybe you could answer this Ed. are the native psychotria species, such as hairy psychotria (loniceroides), similar in chemistry to the south american ones? did aboriginals have a use for them? i found some today in a nearby forest and was wondering if they can be useful for anything (besides producing oxygen and the like) ethnobotanically.

I think it's Ipomoea pes-caprae ssp. brasiliensis, the Goats Foot Convolvulus. Actually, pretty sure it is.
