  1. i've noticed jars colonising much slower now that it's getting colder so that could be the reason for the slow colonisation.

Loads of warmer spots around the house... assuming some have indoor setups. Most appliances generate a fair bit of heat - fridge, plasma/lcd/amplifiers, computers etc.

  2. I have no experience in this type of plant at all other than knowing that similar looking varieties like Brugmansia and Datura have some crazyness to offer... Not that I'm about to make a brew or anything, just thought I'd post a pretty plant I saw today and see if it might have the magic...

Excuse shitty camera phone and all that...

  3. ^ No I genuinely think you have single handedly destroyed all growth of mushrooms in the mountains by taking them all for yourself.

Of course I might have just been fuckin with you...

  4. Yeah I'm sure there's still some around, it's not like they've vanished or anything (although taking Hunabs haul into account you could define that as vanishing I suppose...)

Worth a look on Saturday if you've planned to, I'm sure you'll find a few. If you do head out, can you gimme a shout if Lactarius are still popping up please?

  5. Yeah man like Hunab said, use the time to research. If you find something (anything) this season, consider yourself very lucky! Don't let that put you off looking, I've learnt that all mushroom finds help to educate and add to your experince, help you know what to look for, what to avoid etc. This forum has all the answers to your questions, especially those you haven't asked yet. Read and it will all get obvious pretty quickly... and for fucks sake make sure you know how to ID properly. People here are really helpful, but personally I like to trust what I know and have learned over time.

  6. I'm no expert, but I think it is a combination of factors. First, I honestly think this season has been a little different to others in the past few years; certainly different to last year in the areas being discussed. The main difference I noticed is the frosts; they were (a few weeks ago) really pretty significant. You could hear the grass cracking and snapping under foot early in the morning, meaning that there was a lot of frozen moisture on the surface. These frosts came about without rain, the ground was often reasonably dry, especially anywhere the sun touched. But in slightly more shaded areas, as the moisture the frost locked away was released by the warmth of the day, that moisture was released into very specific areas at a nice slow, constant rate. Those shaded areas were still damp and moist at the end of the day, and that's exactly where the subs popped up in my experience. First flush.

The last couple weeks have brought decent rains, but IMO, the timing of that rain was not so good for mushies. Too early for a second flush; you can tell by all the older rotting subs still hanging around, their demise quickend by over saturation. Those hangers on were really the last of the first flush popping up where they could, now the mycelium needs to recover a little. As Hunab mentioned, you can feel the humidity in the air those nights/mornings it has rained heavily of late, no cool crisp air going on at all...

Last year the subs pretty much came with the first downpour, which happened (from memory) less than a week after the temperature dropped (remember it just kinda came from nowhere?) and before the frosts really started. Subsequent flushes more or less followed decent rainfall a few weeks later, not just for subs, but most species from what I saw. Going out a day or two after rain last year you were hard pressed not to see some mushroom you hadn't spotted before... this year it's not the same story.

Subs second flush will be interesting... could go either way I think.

  7. hmm...just trying to think..would offer my house but i have a bunch of housemates and don't know if they'd be keen. maybe i should just tell them to get stuffed. i've been meaning to do that for a while. maybe there is a venue or a pub or something with a courtyard and places for everyone to sit? pub not much good for anyone under 18 or those driving though... i do know some pubs with courtyards in newtown that we could bags...they are under cover as well. though it kind of changes the nature of the whole meet doesn't it. hmmm..hopefully it just won't rain.

Pretty sure there'll be rain. Pub is an alright idea - don't think we had any under 18s last time anyway...

  8. Finished the last of my Lactarius this weekend. They keep so well in a container in the fridge between two damp bits of paper towel!

Damn wish I knew that - scoffed em all down early in the piece!

Having said that I found some more in the southern highlands area last weekend... but they didn't last long either!

  9. I found the following interesting:

"Do not consume any carbonated beverage, (beer, soda, etc.) before or after consuming the dried Amanita Muscaria. It appears that Muscimol can be reconverted into Ibotenic Acid in the presence of carbonated water. This reverses the effects of drying where Ibotenic Acid loses CO2 and becomes Muscimol. The resulting effect being similar to fresh Amanita Muscaria ingestion nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, stupor, coma like sleep, excess salivation and no hallucinogenic effect!"

  10. Hey kids!

Like all of you, I had an amazing time. Everyone was awesome, considerate, selfless and really very thoughtful - it was a wicked little mountain community while it lasted; I look forward to its' return!

I learnt so damn much from each of you, on many levels. My 'surprise run in with another dimension' was beyond anything that even approached an expectation. Nothing I have ever experienced compares. Without mentioning names, I owe one person in particular my warmest gratitudes for that, as I do the rest of you for being the centre of an environment that I felt comfortable to experience it all with. I don't think I've experienced such generosity from a group of people, most of whom I met for the first time. I really appreciate the time you all took to chat and answer (often basic) questions that I had.

I could blabber on here for hours about what an incredible time it was, but I'm off to cook a Lactarius boscaiola with my wife - Lactarius, bacon, cream - fucking perfect!

    My most sincere thanks.

Forgot to add: For those who gobbled nangs (and didn't we!) make sure you get some vitamin B12 supplements into you over the next week or so to avoid anemia (no not the fucking Tool album) and nerve degeneration. DNA synthesis is also affected. As a side note, if you're pregnant, it's all bad. The gas crosses the placenta, and can result in a brainless and/or spineless baby. Most of you should be OK in that department...
