All great advice. Karo tek seems the way to go for culture, and plenty of sterilization. Silicon sealant is a great idea that I wouldn't have thought of. I presume you use it to plug some small holes in the lid, then when you withdraw the needle it self-seals itself by way of the silicon compressing against itself? So use something like Selleys all clear or am I reading that all wrong? Thanks again for helping with the simple stuff!

Thanks for the replies guys! Yeah the Shaman Australis shop is a great place to send my finances! Feel more than a little stupid I didn't think of that... Be nice to find something local though, so I might also have to hit up a few more chemists as you suggest Hunab (perhaps my dear lady friend would be more convincing than me). While on topic, how do you go about sterilizing Hunab? Boiling in water for set amount of time or some sort of steam sterilization? I thought the plastic might not appreciate it and had in mind to use an old (antique looking) glass syringe I have, but on opening the case I found the glass had perished and shattered; must have been older than I thought!

After a bit of searching elsewhere, homebrew or inkjet refill places seem to have them. Any advice as to whether to use sharp or blunt? Would have thought blunt but not sure.

Best use of a turkey bag I've ever seen! Don't think you could get more fruit growing out of that thing regardless of method used!

Really nice info Hunab, thanks. I love that it all gets nice and cozy in a sleeping bag! Great idea.

Well it's certainly cooler outdoors this evening! Damn I adore this sort of weather like tonight; cool crisp air that you feel inside a little when you first breath it in. And to think it's only just beginning - makes me happy I hate summer!

Do a bit of reading/searching of the forum. All you have asked has been answered here a few times ;) In short, yes, the mountains are said to be a great Sydney area to look. You're looking for subs, often on woodchips. They can be found around Sydney too, but aren't quite as prevalent. Wait for cooler weather after rain (like the rain we've had the last few days).

So... cooler weather on approach... thought this thread was worth a bump

I've posted a few questions to the site already. In case it isn't obvious, the more people who post questions to the site for the program, the more likely it is they will be a feature of the show - the whole point of the show is to put the communities' concerns to the people who need to answer them! Please take 2 minutes to get involved - the issue is far more important that the majority of the country realise. Amongst other things, it sets precedents, and will continue to do so for years to come, not simply in relation to the internet. Our government have already passed laws that allow police to enter and search your home without your knowledge (google it), now you're being told what information is OK to access; worse yet, you'll never know what information you can't access... because for you, it won't exist anymore.

Well Senator Conroy will be on Q&A this week... so get your questions posted here, or better yet, get yourself in attendance at the studio to put your point forward: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/qanda/

That has also been my (admittedly limited) experience of the Blue Mountains area looking for subs. I've also never found actives in bark chips, only woodchips.

^ Exactly right. Generally fruit left to grow to this sort of size is referred to as a marrow, though I'm pretty sure the term 'marrow' is a general term to describe members of the squash family. With age and size generally comes bitterness or at least blandness. Much nicer to eat when smaller!

This is a really interesting thread - always wondered about this, thanks for the explanation guys!

I'm sure you would have enjoyed it man... but the who knows, maybe you did... I remember you mentioning you might linger in the shadows or wander past unsure of whether to approach. Hope to see you there next time - everyone was really chilled an approachable

You can fight my wife for it...

I can drive and have a car so I guess I'm your guy Happy to take a few travellers along, would likely have 3 seats spare if my wife comes along.

Yes indeed!

^ Not much point suggesting venues you won't be at dreamz... The gallery sounds great, bit like a library in there but we could chill outside for a while then head in for a change of scenery.

Sounds like an excellent idea - great way to learn and pass on information! I'll be there.

^ I know a friend who has done a similar thing. In his case he put the log under his house and watered every day or two - in this case the log was within the same general area as where it was moved to so climate and conditions were much the same, which as mentioned is a crucial factor. Still produced some stunning fruit!

Really awesome day. Great to meet everyone and learn loads! The knowledge some of you have is inspirational and somehow comforting... nice to know it's all out there rather than lost. Spending time in the gardens was great too - been a few years since I was there and I found it pretty relaxing/interesting. I'm really very grateful for the generosity of the group yesterday. I'm looking forward to returning the favor in time. Regular meet is an awesome idea, and seems to have support so lets make it happen. I've never been so content to be called a cunt ;) Forgot to add... apologies for wimping out on the casserole.

Sounds great! Good suggestion on the shady spot neoshaman - I'm in no way a fan of the heat, and it looks to be a hot day on Saturday!

Great to see this is going ahead. Hopefully the rain won't feature too prominently!!! Anyone suggest a time?
