Hi Woof, I like the idea of storing your own hydrogen.. something I want to play with one day. There are two things I know of which can be a problem... I'm pretty sure that storing hydrogen and oxygen under pressure is quite dangerous, so the two really need to be seperated. I dont know the exact pressure at which it becomes liable to ignite? There is also hydrogen embrittlement of some types of steel but you just need to make sure the type of material your equipment is made of is not susceptable. As for compressing the gas, any standard piston compressor or screw compressor will work, as long as it's not going to ignite the gas.. eg if you used a compressor powered by a standard dc motor with brushes it will provide an ignition source to leaking gas. A project I would definately play with outside with plenty of ventilation! But anyway, to answer your question I was thinking of using an old air compressor (tradesman type with air tank) and feeding the hydrogen direct in the air intake. You would also need a pressure switch on the intake side to turn off the compressor when it starts to pull a vacuum. The same on the pressure side to switch off when tank is full. You'd also need some type of high pressure release on the intake and outlet side as a safety precaution. I realise this is highly dangerous so please anyone dont attempt this at home!!!! unless you're prepared for a few explosions!!

g'day spacemonk, I was in your exact situation once. I found it really hard to get in direct with a mining company, instead I ended up with an electrical contractor who specialised in industrial electrical / automation. I'd highly recommend this step instead as you'll get a heap more experience over a huge range of equipment - I ended up working in mining, power generation, water treatment, manufacturing, robotics, oil/gas all during my apprenticeship. two big tips I can give you: -do your electrical pre-apprenticeship at TAFE (basically 1st year of your electrical apprenticeship) -go to centrelink and sign up for jobnetwork - they will then assign you to an employment agency of your choice. for example I signed up with CHR, attended all their jobsearch courses and showed I was keen. In return they paid for all my interview clothes and shoes, advertised me in the paper, actively searched for jobs for me, even offered to buy all my tools so I was more attractive to an employer! try to avoid doing a domestic apprenticeship if you want to get into mining as making the step is a lot harder - even though the TAFE course is the same there is so much more to know with industrial electrical and I'm still learning every day

I'd highly recommend either a landcruiser or hilux if you are after reliability and parts availability! Cruiser is the toughest and will last longest off road... but pretty thirsty compared to the hilux. The non turbo diesel hiluxes are pretty gutless on the highway so if you can save the money buy a turbo model! My last hilux was a '97 3.0 diesel did 345000km before I sold it - during that time didn't burn any oil or blow smoke, no engine work, only had to replace timing belts at normal interval and replaced radiator and an idler arm.... was still going strong!! As for ex mining vehicles it can be a gamble but you may get a bargain! from experience half the vehicles on site get driven by office workers!! but if it is ex-underground definately forget it!

rahli is right, you need pollen from a different plant.. but also there are definately self pollinating varietes around, hopefully you are lucky!!!

i have these sticky weeds in my lawn, almost like clover but the seedpods have a sticky coating which will stick to anything... bare feet, car tyres, pets... man they are annoying!!! they only just appeared this year and have completely taken over the backyard

yeah, plants are cranking with the rain!! i'm away for a few weeks in the NT will be good to get back and see the difference... if you're in a hurry to get a plant, shiphards have them in nambour (seeds and plants)

I have seed pods on my trees at the moment, still green will let you know when they're ripe if interested. Anyone got any good recipes for using the leaves? they have a very strong taste, a bit much to eat raw.

Yes! I grew up in the south west, an awesome place... best beaches in australia i reckon... and the big timber country is great too around walpole / denmark. Gets a bit cold and wet for extended periods in winter but a good excuse to stay inside next to the fire... Then I discovered QLD and I'll think I'll be staying here for a bit... property is much cheaper and the countryside is great... even though the population is huge compared to WA there is still plenty of quiet places if you go inland a bit... Another place I like is the pilbara region of WA... its pretty much desert but there's loads of work and the climate is great (if you like hot/dry) surprisingly theres heaps of good camping spots / water holes to go out to on the weekends. Only downside is the remoteness between towns.

I've heard stories of people getting busted and being charged for only a small quantity, when in fact they actually had bulk amounts that went "missing" after the raid. I also remember a story up at gympie, was in the newspaper about 5-6 years ago cant remember the exact numbers but was some rediculous amount of plants (like 20,000?) a farmer was growing in his paddock "for his cows" and got of with a small fine!!!

those square stems can be tricky to grow! powering on one day, eaten by bugs or dying of root rot the next.... some of the best examples i've seen have been "neglected" plants and lots of the time they are just killed with kindness only water once the soil is starting to dry free draining premium quality potting mix shaded position (have seen growing exposed to couple hours morning full sun and all good) quarter stength ferto when needed let them adapt to their position and dont move them around so much check daily for bugs!!

auto retic is the best! its a necessity for me since I spend most my time away from home, but the biggest advantage is in the health of the plants which know they are getting a regular water schedule and grow like mad... it only takes a short period without water to trigger dormancy and it takes a lot longer to get back into growth mode i'm not an expert on watering cacti, but I guess as long as water is getting to the roots anything will do! I personally dont like sprays due to water wastage but they have the advantage of spreading out over a larger area which I guess would be a benefit for cacti with shallow root systems

good pics lsdreamz... dunno what is eating your cacti, but I know from my experience that anything new in a garden gets instantly attacked by whatever animal is around and after that they seem to be left alone scrub turkeys are my number one enemy at the moment, anything newly planted has to be seriously barricaded, they eat all my bananas and after that they will uproot the entire tree or peck big cavities out of the trunk. turkeys have no fear, they will stalk you and attack when the time is right and try pecking off your toes

I've always worked on industrial sites where drug testing is the norm, and have seen workmates sacked from their drug use which has usually been a week or more prior while away on break. Then there's the group who constantly come in hung over from the night before, hide all day and are completely unproductive. These guys are always the heros, yet the dope smoker is kicked off site on the spot without further question.

Hi there xodarap, It all comes down to how much you are prepared to spend really... I've installed a few solar systems and a package worth around $30K will keep you living very comfortable without having to stress too much about your power use. Your hot water system and cooking appliances will have to be non electric. Definately do the calcs as Ed suggested so you can work out a price on your system.

yep, salt and vinegar is another one i'm addicted to, but the flavouring burns my mouth?? dunno if its just me, but after a whole bag of salt and vinegar chips my mouth is literally suffering from a chemical burn and the next day i'm spitting out layers of dead skin that were once lining the inside of my mouth... but I cant help myself, it tastes so good am I the only one this happens to?
