bill mollison, the primary founder of permaculture, said that this was probably the most efficient and effective system of dryland watering he had ever encountered. he was in hyperabad, india, so presumably they invented it, and the mouth of the pot was aboveground to be filled with watering-cans. i've never seen them but anyone know how you could make a porous ceramic pot?

probably, i couldn't find anything on the subject.. but the assertion that fungal spores are up to the task is purely McKenna's. the ability of bacteria to withstand re-entry has been proven.

here i was thinking that most of the beautiful fungi was in the northern hemisphere. score one for new zealand! i wouldn't know where to begin searching for an ID, it's such an unusual fruiting body. where do you suppose the spores are? modern fungus taxonomy is very micro-oriented so you might want to take a much closer look and describe the hyphae.

can you make the meaning of that statement any clearer?

wow. check out some new zealand fungus sites. they have so many impressive speciments! far more impressive than anything growing in queensland. we have several glow-in-the-dark mushrooms but nothing nearly as appealling in daylight.

McKenna has a good argument for all fungus being a case of panspermia (in The Archaic Revival). Something along the lines of it's total feasibility and if i didn't make this part up, the lack of any ancient fossil record of fungus. You see spores could easily survive cosmic radiation, space-faring and planetary re-entry, and for a spore 500 million years adrift is nothing. Their coating is among the hardest substances in nature and space is ideal for their preservation. Plus, fungus looks really weird. That one you have there is a definite candidate for interstellar introduction, much like the kiwi accent. Never seen anything like it and eager to hear it's explanation. i checked out the link... it's sad to hear that the legendary story of thermopylae has been perverted so. ahh well, big films tend to do that to great stories. i notice one major difference from these posts - if i'm not wrong, the other greek armies weren't too afraid to fight, they were too far away!! the role of the tiny spartan outfit was to keep the persians out until the larger greek army could arrive and carry on the fight. on the homosexual note, it's surprising how many cultures have viewed homosexuality as a warriors virtue when modern military policy holds an opposite view. the ancient reason being twofold: greater bonding between soldier/lovers, and less homesickness. pretty handy if you think about some of the campaigns that lasted several decades.

hmmmm you asked for subgenre descriptions. quite an ask but i'll take a crack. these are some of the subgenres as i have been led to understand them in my tiny grasp of trance music. i'm not going to recommend anything but if you pm me i will. morning is played when the sun is new and it's vibrant, uplifting, ethereal maybe. can be corny but can also be amazing, and probably helps you cope with the aftermath of the chems you may have munched last night. full on is full on i guess, it isn't what you'd call minimal or laid back, it has big lead synths that get in your face. dark is kinda gloomy and glitchy, it's hard and fast so it might be the one you're looking for but it's more machine than soul ;) seems to get played after midnight but before sunrise, and is avoided by many, loved by others... also seems to be the trance refuge of the metalhead then you have progressive trance which i can't quite describe but to me it's very formulaic and digestible, which is weird because it goes by the name progressive (which traditionally means non-formulaic and hard to digest) check them all out, i think you will find that trance in general goes well with the psychadelic experience, especially coming from giant speakers anyway these are the major distinctions as i currently see them but it certainly doesn't cover everything you hear at a doof edit: broadly speaking, psytrance simultaneously goes DOOF DOOF and chuggalug chuggalug, and has crazy samples, synths and effects that blow your mind. jeez do i have to explain everything?

psy psy psy which includes classical mushroom, any recent infected mushroom is full of vocals. the tricky part is finding which psytrance you love, and advice won't help you much there. another thing that doesn't help is that you will hear songs at doofs and probably never find out which artist was responsible. i'd like to say that dark is where it's at but that's too narrow an opinion, and the most impressive songs i've heard (or *thought* i've heard...) were not dark.

i've been shown a few aikido moves. to be more accurate a few were demonstrated on me. i was surprised how easily i could be manipulated when he had me by the throat. aikido only uses strikes to cause pain and shock so i won't disagree with you about how useful boxing could be, but aikido seems like very powerful stuff. everything is practised on a partner, so i guess half the time you are being thrown around etc, the other half you are throwing somebody around, so it may not cover every situation but i'd consider it "real" practise. one thing that has changed over the years is that they no longer do most of their training on their knees.

i can't say for sure bloke, honestly it didn't affect me very much. what i can say is that there was a first aid tent, plenty of compassionate people, and the copperdogs and ambos hung around for a good number of hours. if there was any proper, professional counselling it probably took a while to arrive. for the record i'm not completely disagreeing with you or torsten, it's just my personal opinion that witnessing the jumps was thoroughly awesome, to me it outweighs witnessing the unfortunate accident. you have a good point, in terms of some people being deeply disturbed by it, and i guess you'll be somewhat vindicated by the fact that the person at fault has lost his property. the shitty thing is that we can't enjoy that magnificent site ever again. bat caves and all. anyway, this really had nothing to do with the organisers. i'm sure they were informed but they couldn't have stopped it if they wanted to. it was between the jumpers and the pilot/property owner. at the very least he had to replace somebodies early 80's model hatchback. perhaps he's been sued for emotional distress? my guess is he owes a lot of money in fines for breaking the law. maybe you are right and there should have been a serious effort to inform people of what was going to happen, but i'll say once more it's unfair to implicate the organisers.

a bit late but i wanted to post my .2 pesos on this matter, and some other things. i saw this guy smashing into a car just after his chute opened from about 50 metres, and was nearby when the look on everybodies face changed (when he was definitely dead). my head was pretty straight at the time, i feel sorry for anybody who saw that on a head full of tryptamines, but i still have to say that watching those base jumps was quite a spectacular addition to an already fantastic gig. facts: the base jumping was not advertised, it came as a complete surprise (i think mesq mentioned this - looking forward to your set at innersight mesq). just try to picture this.. you are sitting at your base camp trying to cope with a bunch of acid you think maybe you shouldn't have taken, when somebody starts screaming and clawing and pointing to the sky. you look up and a red man seems to be spiralling around like he doesn't know where he's going.. he approaches the earth so fast that you actually think he's a goner, then at the last moment he propels himself forwards and hits the dirt running really fast, and you realise he was never in trouble he was just putting on a great show that nearly made your head implode. i'm glad this jumper went first because he was one amazing lunatic. i don't think the rest of them really came close to beating his performance, but they were still good to watch. yes, somebody died, but you've gotta factor into consideration that this person died doing something he loved.. he was flown to this country specifically to perform a dangerous jump in front of lots of people. from what i gather, it was an unfortunate case of (his own) human error and while helicopter jumps are illegal in this country (they can't reach the altitude required for skydiving), he was a pro who obviously knew what dangers were involved and agreed to take the risk. the owner was flying the chopper, and the base jumpers were all experienced experts who must have obviously chosen to do the jump. to my knowledge all six jumps (from three seperate chopper lifts) were different experts from around the world. one negative comment i do have is that the landing area was not particularly large, and around the outside of the fenced area were cars, stalls and camps. my personal judgment of his velocity is that if he hadn't slammed into a hatchback, he may have miraculously survived, but that's probably a stupid judgment. the gorge has been sold. there will be no more super-doofs at the gorge, and this is a crying shame. however, rover park (location of earth freq) may be the new alternative and while it isn't as large it is very comfortable and i hope that rover park has open ears for future doofs.
