    Mealy Bugs

Most of my plants are in pots. I had a bad ant problem, they weren't doing any real harm but as said above they can help other bugs along. I got rid of them by 1st submerging the pots in water for 10min, this killed the ants. To stop them getting back in I put a larger saucer than the pot underneath filled it with water and then put a brick on its side in the midde thus creating water barrier ants cannot cross. I also obtained a little ant dust and filled up onwe of the large nests with it. Has worked pretty well. It has been a while now and still no ants.

    SYDNEY storms :(

Hey all, My plants and particularly growing tips of many of my cacti have been completely smashed by MASSIVE hail stones :( My garden has been dadly battered. Even my old (5yr) columnar cacti have been hit badly. I had most of my plants out of the green house to absorb the rain....................all that hard work.

  5. Over a year ago I received 2 cuttings both markedly different and both labeled T. Bridgesii. One of the cuttings was quite old, dehydrated and was the lower woody part of the plant. I planted them both up and after about a month the healthy new growth cutting rooted and began to grow. The older cutting did nothing and just sat there for over a year. I basically thought it was stuffed and was thinking of using the pot it was in for another plant. About 3 weeks ago I was watering when I noticed a nice bulge in the skin near the top I was quite excited as I knew this would be a pup. Today I had another look and sure enough a nice pup What do you think it is ? Again it was labeled T. Bridgesii.

    Flowers....

I love all these flower threads The second picture is superb. nice one Passive
  7. Hey Ace, I was going to cut it when I first got it but holy shit that thing is like hardwood !! Once you get about half way down it is seriously tough and woody. If I had another photo of the other side you would know what I mean. I may get one tomorrow ! In regards to the colour, I got this cutting from a bloke in South Aus he stated this strain of Bridgesii was rare. I saw the mother plant and it too was the same pale green colour. I wonder why ? Could be environmental I guess.
  8. Hey everyone. I'm after sone cheap grafting stocks. I have a few grafts that will need to be removed from the peres in a few months but no larger stocks to put them on. Will pay $ for them. Don't really mind the condition they are in as long as they will root and grow ! Thanks.

Sensational ! Yeah bigger pot for sure. Due to the black spot I would put it in a larger terracotta pot with nice well draining soil. Good find

Lopho seeds have started to germinate

I took some pictures a few days ago of the first of the Lophos to germinate. I Also planted about 25 Astrophytum asterias "nudum" they are in the blue container in the pictures none have germinated as it was only like 3 days ago. I had a look in the grow room just now and there are heaps more lophos up and a few Astros too. Its looking good.

    Grafting Comp- Oct 2007

Shruman, I have 3 x 48w and they work great. You can buy 48w compact fluros for about 25bucks have a look around and as you know they last forever. XipeTotec, Mate fluros have worked wonders for me in terms of growth and health of my grafts. Longer light periods stimulate growth as far as I can tel.

Shruman, Nice cacti mate props. Your light setup is almost exactly the same as mine, I find the compact fluros work quite well. How many watts are each of yours ? Thanks

    Been a while ! update.

I think I will use this function if only for my personal record. If anyone can take something from it thats a bonus. My last entry was in feb where I grafted come T.peru "Icaro" seedlings on to peres. 3 of the grafts took and have grown quite rapidly. They were grown outdoors even over winter and have done quite well. I will post a pic of them in a few weeks. About a week ago I put 25 mixed Lophs and 50 L.Willi's down. About 20 have germinated so far and it looks good as far as germination goes. I am going to graft about 15 to 20 and do a little expriement. Half will be grown under compact fluros and half will be grown outside, under good old aussie sun and shade cloth. I will post pics of the seedlings soon.

    Laurelia novae-zealandiae

G'day, Anyone know much about this plant ? Only just stumbled accross it, through a mate of mine. I don't have much info except the active is called Pukateine and it is a native of New Zealand. Pukateine is supposed to give a Opioid like affect when ingested.

    Shipping into Australia?

    Yeah agreed.

    Shipping into Australia?

Yes, I have much exprience importing "stuff", and plant material of this nature is extremly hard to get in. Mark, your seeds are completely legal and as Creach siggests you will have no problem with them. Also Customs deal with chems/illegal material and are not up to date with plant / botanical mater. Quarantine deal wth plant matter and that is there forte. Customs are extremely vigilant in identifiying and stoppping illegal drugs. This does not include plant / botanical matter and they don't really look at plant matter all that much. Peace

    Shipping into Australia?

FM., Mate the aust government is a little nuts on imports in regards to anything of a botanic nature. Quarantine is extremely vigilant on seed, plants and basically anything else of a botanic nature as you said. It's weird, getting plants or seed into aust is next to impossible but try a phyto or research chem and no drams there ?????? crazy. I rekn you would have less than 2% chance of getting plant material including seed into aust. Not sure re homerew ??
