  1. Has anyone ever found one of these (I think the genus name is Morchella)? I remember reading that they were quite rare, but seemed to come up sometimes after bushfires. Does anyone know what kind of habitat they'd be found in, or at what time of year?

  2. Scotty - I have never cultivated mushrooms and don't know what the silica gel is used for, but if you just need a desiccant, go to the hardware shop and get a carton of "Damp-Rid" (calcium chloride, used for drying rooms before painting). It works very well and very quickly - difficult to re-use though.

  3. I remember seeing a book recommending one of the blue-staining boletes as an edible species ("sliced up in salad"), but I've also heard people claiming that there are viciously toxic ones out there. Are there any blue-staining Boletus (introduced from other countries)? The only blue-stainers I've found have been under eucalypts and brush-box, so I assume they're native (Austroboletus, or whatever they are, I've never actually tried to ID them). Does anyone know anything about the supposedly-toxic ones (eg. habitat, country of origin ,genus, apperance, degree/kind of toxicity, etc)?

  4. Still not entirely sure what you are asking mescalito, but I would like to tell you a story. About two years ago, SWIM was very, very depressed. Suicidally, in fact. There was nothing particularly wrong with their life, but nothing to really look forward to either. One day they finally had the house to themselves and ate a whopping dose of mushrooms. Aside from some brief unpleasantness resulting from forgetting to unplug the phone, it was a wonderful experience. SWIM listened to music and danced and lay down in the grass watching the clouds, and most importantly, remembered that life is good. This realisation kept SWIM happy for weeks afterwards. I don't know if it's a good idea to recommend psilocybin in many cases when people are depressed - everyone responds differently, and if something really is wrong in their life, it may not be helpful. But it did work that once, and I'll be forever grateful for that experience.

There has been. That was one of the things the US mentioned as they were preparing to invade Afghanistan - that the Taliban secretly supported opium production, that their government was propped up by "drug money", that they had huge stockpiles of opium...

Don't forget Colombia either - the US has used Colombias coca plantations to try to justify going in and taking their oil. And I don't think that it was the only South American country this happened in, though it may be the only one they got oil out of. I got the impression that the US was pretty fond of invading South-American countries (often using the "drug-wars" theme as an excuse), setting up a puppet government, and then claiming forever after that that country was in debt to the US and must give them "favourable trading deals" (ie really really cheap food/minerals/oil,etc.) The whole thing makes me sick - US military assholes destroying some poor farmer's coca crop, then telling them that they had to grow oranges or something for the US, for which they will recieve a tenth of the money, because some idiots in the US government believe that cocaine use is wrong, and that hassling some peasant farmer half a continent away will fix the problem.

    OK, I've ranted enough.

  7. I believe that stropharia cubensis is another name for psilocybe cubensis. It's probably more likely that they were introduced unintentionally with the cows, than deliberately by hippies. Does anyone know how long they have been in the country for? Try cow paddocks in autumn and spring especially - they like warm wet weather(although I have seen areas where they appear over 9 or 10 months of the year). These fungi are very widespread, and you shouldn't have great trouble finding them.

Remember, however, that possession of psilocybin is illegal, as is trespassing.

  8. Found a lovely black bolete (think it was a native, given the location) once - shaggy scales on the cap, very dark brown sponge, ink-black stem. Couldn't ID it, but then again three-quarters of the fungi I find aren't in my book. (Anyone know of a good book for Australian species?)

Don't know about that one, but I do remember one bit about not being allowed to eat fruit off trees younger than four years or something because the tree was "uncircumcised". :D

And Auxin (or anyone else for that matter), could you suggest a way to clean a syringe such as the one pictured earlier in this thread? The metal (what kind?) is pretty scummy - there's all this greenish oxidised crap on it. How could I get it off and prevent it from happening again? Ideally I'd be able to clean the thing up to a smooth shiny surface so it could be sterilised properly and actually used, but any suggestions would be welcome.

  10. Would any penicillum species be dangerous for someone with a penicillin allergy, or is it only some species? I know someone with such an allergy who claims to get allergic symptoms after eating penicillium-containing blue cheeses. Do the species in blue cheese actually produce penicillin, or is it a related compound, or are the symptoms all in their head...?

And sort of off-topic here, but does anyone (I'm lookin' at you, bluemeanie :) ) know what the nasty molds on peanuts and chillies are called - they produce somethings called aflotoxins, which are apparently quite nasty - forget what they're meant to do.
