    Tasmanian Mushroom Season

Hi Thought, I reckon you'd have to be pretty lucky to find any now. I have observed over the years that its fairly well over by late June mid July. But saying that, the season was late and the weather has been fairly pleasant lately so you never know they might have hung in for a bit longer this year. From what i have seen they have been fairly happy, and growing in places i wouldn't normally expect to see them. Wouldn't hurt to keep your eyes open next time you go bushwalking, you never know. What do the other taswegians think??? Cheers, Obtuse
  2. Far Out.... This is going to have some far reaching ramifications and if i was american i'd be just a little worried. Considering Australia's stance in this mess that is the iraq war, i'm a little worried too. cheers, Obtuse.

    Australian Free Seed Ring

Hey everyone, Thanks Auxin and Gerbil for pointing this out. The sudden disappearence of seed has happened in the last two days and i would presume someone either over-ordering or just playing silly-buggers. Thanks also to Gerbil for the text supplied for the website. I have temporarily diabled the box on the order form where you can specify the amount of packets you can order. The seedring is about sharing freely so as many people get to grow plants as possible, particularly the rarer ones, and not for a few people to overorder or stockpile. so for the moment I'd suggest one packet per species per order, but at the end of the day its up to the individual chapter. The thing with being "free" is that its going to invite the "as much free as possible" attitude. It will be interesting to see how many orders come in. cheers, Obtuse

  15. Hi Shroomy, My understanding is that Tasmanian Sassafras is Atherosperma moschatum. I may be wrong. I bought one recently and is known to be a tasmanian native. lovely plant. I have always been attracted to them while bushwalking as there is just something about their smell, especially when you scratch their bark, or crush a leaf. mmm yummy. Anyone else have any info? cheers, Obtuse

    think i've seen these before...

Hi Shadako, I'd say not mate. the photo isn't really clear on that close up. But to me most of the stems don't seem to have any bluing, and they are too orange/brown in colour. colour of the cap doesn't help sometimes. Here in tas, you generally can identify them by the white stem with some brown showing through and blueing. caps can be anything from brown/gold for the young ones, becomming golden yellow then pale yellow with blue stains on the older ones. In my experience colour and texture of the stem are more of a giveaway rather than then cap, as there are heaps of look alikes. The cap is usually more like a sign saying "here i am, look at me". here is a pic a friend sent me recently: It has some great examples of what they can look like at various stages of their development. remember tho I'm in tas, and what we have here may not resemble what you have there. confusing hey. cheers, Obtuse

Should newbies shut up and listen

I too spent a fair bit of time reading this site before i registered, and then still took my time to contribute. I still don't contribute often because I know i don't have much experience in most matters. I contribute to discussions when i feel i can by just trying to be helpful. I would think a fair few others would do the same. It is important that newbies contribute as there is only one way to learn when you are one. If you are corrected when you err, all the better, its all part of the learnign process. In a lot of cases it is also helpful for the more experienced to see how easy it is for some to make errors, and get confused. especially with all the mixed and confusing information that is out there on the net. In most cases i think it is important that people identify their sources of knowledge. Whether it is from their vast range of knowledge by reading on the net, or whether they have actually gotten their hands dirty by growing the said plants themselves, or if it is info via a friend or someone they know. If i skim through a heap of posts on a topic i will always take more notice of someone who has identified a fact from their own experience. Anyway my other reason for posting to this thread: I was only talking about this recently with a friend... I was going by this compilation by obtuse... which doesnt seem to include this species, unless under a different name. http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/inde...showtopic=13073 These do not come from Tasmania. there are no cubensis here guys. I think someone obvously tagged them with that name to add an element of the exotic / unusual / obscure. I for one would really like to know the history and background on these, and why they have the name they do. cheers, Obtuse
