Theres some info on the group i mentioned about skim milk neutralizing the virus on exterior and in the soil, also information on the increased alkaloid content in infected cactus, if you were to keep her you may run the risk of insects transmitting the disease, some however are keeping infected plants and rehabilitating them. Theres debate as to whether many cactus are carriers of the dormant virus and whether nutrient play a part in its activation.

I might have to make a facebook account and join that group.  I don't think I'll keep the infected plant though, it's not really worth the risk of transmission.

Speaking of the alkaloids do you know if it would it even be safe to consume a cactus with such an infection?  Throwing it out seems awfully wasteful compared to drinking her but the idea of doing so feels a bit sketchy to me.

The circles and rings are telltale viral, often due to nutrient defficencies but not always. Could look into tmv (tobacco mosaic virus/tombavirus) pm me for a facebook group with tons of info if your keen to learn more

Goddamn it, that's the last thing I wanted it to be.  Poor Eileen.  She's now isolated from the rest of the cacti but I'm guessing she's done for :(

I'll take another pic at around 5pm to show the progression of the damage.  If it continues at it's current rate I'll bin her pot and all straight afterwards though as she's now considered a plague victim and all but dead to me.  Thankfully I doubled down and bought two Eileen cuts so I won't lose the genetics but this is absolutely heartbreaking to me as I had become quite attached to that particular plant.  She was everything I wanted in a cactus and truly a beautiful plant that stuck out from the crowd.  I'm going to miss her a lot :(

  3. Thanks for the quick reply mate :)

I didn't really think it was a nutrient issue as I had recently put them in the larger pots with a tons of new soil with a handful of organic compost mixed in.  Thanks for the nutrient recommendation though, I'll definitely pick some up from bunnings next time I'm down there so I'm ready for them when the time comes.

After spending the last 45 mins or so on google I'm lead to believe it's sun burn as the cactus isn't squishy, leaking fluids or anything.  More than that the damage is 99% on that one side of the plant which gets full sunlight until around midday.  It was fine being so openly exposed but the last 4 days were all very wet and constantly overcast so I think it may have just got hammered by the sun this morning when the weather cleared up.  I'll definitely keep an eye on it and await other replies though because there's a good chance I'm wrong.

  4. Those hybrids sound really nice and I hope you're right about the perus x bridgesii's because that's exactly what I'm aiming for :)

I'm going to need a bit of help with my 'Eileen' cactus.  It's started going yellow and is the only one of the cacti to do it.  It also seems to be in a hurry to do so because it didn't look like this at all yesterday and I would have noticed as I check on them a couple of times a day.  Does it need a feed? If so I have some coco based hydroponic nutrients as well as a calcium and magnesium supplement I could give it but if they're no good please let me know what I should do because I will literally cry like a little girl if my baby dies.

    But this one.....idk

I got it from Sam 2/3 years ago and rooted it, so it has been on own roots for 2 plus years now, the one you seem sure about is obviously a recent degraft because of the large spines!

Not many going up for sale that arent degrafts so Im happy to confirm its the real thing, not some Scop hybrid.

Sorry for not believing the original listing, it's just that the pics don't do it justice to an untrained eye.

On a side not here's a tasmanian loph some of you might be interested in though again with the multiple not this varieties in the title lol :)

I see the same thing on there all the time but in particular with lophs.  They'll call them LW Cactus and then list half a dozen different varieties to show up in people's searches.  Here's a tame example: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LW-Cactus-Massive-8-5-cm-head-golden-torch-Trichocereus-graft-15cm-pot/264127709048?hash=item3d7f3cff78:g:Fp8AAOSwjwZcLYGk:rk:13:pf:0

    could you reccomend a tek?

Nope, all mine failed to sprout lol  I'm sure someone else with experience with growing them will pop in eventually though.  It's quite a popular plant :)

I bet that second one is the first "CSD" that doesn't sell.  It might be legit but it certainly doesn't look right.  My guess is he saw the last legit CSD go for $939 and figured his scop hybrid looked somewhat like the original mother plant and that there would be someone desperate enough to pay 2/3 the cost on the off chance it was real.

CSD might be be bee's knees but for $600 - $1000 there's a hell of a lot more on offer on the bay at rip off prices that will save you a ton of cash.  For example I recently paid $26 for mine but this $75 - $150 Roseii#2 comes to mind: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Trichocereus-Peruvianus-Rosei-2-30cm-cactus-Clone-Cutting/233082773510

There's also a Sharxx Blue for anyone that wants to get into a serious bidding war

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Peruvian-Torch-Trichocereus-Echinopsis-peruvianus-Sharxx-Blue-Cutting/273637386254

So many great cuts have been put up this year alone and at reasonable prices that it could never be justified to pay the asking price for any CSD on ebay but doubly so if you facebook stalk the original grower because you can see he has a long history of palming it off for well under $200.  I'm almost inclined to open a facebook account just to get in on that action but even still I just got 6 hype name cuts for $190 (including postage too) off ebay so justifying it for a single plant is almost unimaginable to me.  It would made for a nice flex though.

  9. I read that the first bit of alcohol that boils off is methanol which is the alcohol that will make you literally go blind which is where the term blind drunk comes from.  It has it's uses for cleaning, fueling some remote control vehicles, extracting drugs, etc.  which I only know because I fucked up a while back drunkingly purchasing it instead of ethanol.  So yeah I wouldn't throw it away but I'd definitely make sure to err on the side of caution and lose a bit of the good alcohol instead of risking having it contaminate the stuff I intended on drinking as well as wearing safety gear while handling it.  If memory serves only 10mL is enough to cause permanent health issues so if the recipe said the first 10% is methanol I'd go 15% just to be sure.  You really can't be too careful with something so toxic.

  10. Those cacti sure are pretty.  You can definitely see the influence from both parents in them especially the really dark green rosei#1 colouring which is very promising for the future.  You've got me mega excited to see how mine turn out now :)

Chances are you took those pictures with a phone which uses a corrective orientation tag which will always flip the pictures on you.  What I do to correct that is use irfanview to do a batch conversion of all the pictures I've taken and force the new pictures to have none of the old exif data.  This results in those sideways pictures rotating again by removing the corrective data but once you flip them up the right way they stay up the right way.  You could get the same result in mspaint or whatever image editing app you use by saving the files as a png or whatever to a new location but I find the batch conversion in irfanview handy as it'll smash out as many pics as I want instead of doing it manually one at a time.

Are those Len x Sharxx Blue the only Sharxx hybrid you have going?  I have some seeds of it that have been open pollinated and it crossed with trich. brigesii 'Ben' as well that I've been pretty keen on planting just to get some more blue plants growing.  How blue are yours compared to the rosei#1 x john?  That hybrid of yowie x john sounds pretty good too.  I love those deep distinct notches on my cacti and a bit of plumpness never hurt anyway either.  Speaking of which I may have to break out the psycho0 x john seeds I have.  There's bound to be some similar plants in that stock for sure :)

  11. Thanks mate and you're not wrong, I've definitely caught the bug.  I don't even care that I feel like a slave to them at times because they're such a pleasure just to look at let alone consume.  I too have to calm it down with buying cacti though as it's put me in the poor house.  Thankfully I don't have a missus.  I can't imagine the world of grief I'd get lol

It sounds like you have quite the collection.  1000-2000 plants is no joke.  I hope to get that large, if not more so, in the future.  It's always a number game so you gotta throw down if you want to find greatness.  Speaking of which pics of the Rosei#1 x John or it didn't happen lol  Seriously though I'd love to see some pics if you can be bothered.  It would be fantastic to get a glimpse of what's in store.

I actually used a brand new box cutter to do the grafts today but that TBM had a massive stem in the middle of it that was rock hard which is why it fought back.  I tried my best to only go down on it but the second the blade got stuck on that stem and Iet my grip ease a little the top of the blade went right into the cactus sinking my heart into my toes.  I felt like a right bastard but I did what I could to save it so hopefully it survives.  If not I have more to fall back on.

As for the scab/alkaloid claim I got it from this video

I love that chicks channel.  She claims to not be into consuming the cacti she grows but she's into lophs and trichs like no tomorrow and her partner is an absolute hippy so I call bullshit on that claim of hers but all the same she absolutely loves all of her cacti and succulents which shows every time she talks about them.  Her passion for them keeps me coming back and she puts up  new videos all the time which is great.

Good luck with your home brew/still setup and have a drink for me in the meantime while you're at it :)

  12. I feel like Frankenstein and died a little on the inside by absolutely mutilating my girls and piecing them together today.  You lot may be used to grafting  but I feel like a monster over it lol  Anyways here's David, 'Fields' Macrogonus, John and my great shame for the day a TBM that fought the blade.

I grafted them all to a bunch of quite large pachanoi cuts I had making sure to keep the tips so that I can have more grafting stock in the future.  I also started a blue peru project yesterday which had me planting all my peruvian seed stock.  A good 600+ seeds went in from 8 different strains and hybrids like Rosei#1 x John which is the one I'm most excited about as I have both parents already and really want to see how their genetics play out.  The unmarked blue pots at the bottom of the greenhouse have tons of iboga seeds planted in them and with any luck I wont kill them like I did the iboga plant I bought a while back.  Wish me luck :)

yeah, its from the original grower. A member here. I don't think its a good idea to invest in a bit of csd for future profit. There's a bunch of people that have dozens of grafts that will be released over the next 12 months and the price will deflate quickly. It has become more sought after because of EG's book... It is also a very slow grower...

I hope you're right.  I somewhat feel incomplete without it as it's basically the ultimate hype clone but screw paying $700+ for it.

Yeah face book, awhile ago when i frist heard of csd, whent looking for it typed in csd in the search thingy, there was cactus page selling csd cuts at remarkably low prices, also found a bloke talking about his csd cactus that he grew from seed who had a similar name to the bloke selling cheap csd cuts. As i understand it the original was from cuts handed out to few lucky sab members as rememoral for a dead member who originally grew the original

But i could be completely wrong if so i apologize

I too facebook stalked him and saw lots of cuts going for $150-200.  There's no way in hell it's worth the asking price on ebay when he's palming them off that cheaply, well cheaply by comparison anyway.

    CSD   CSD   CSD   CSD

I know it's got a legendary rep and all but it's just a cactus.  More than that though look at how many pups the original is putting out.  There's no reason for it to be rare or getting such absurd amounts of money.  Then again knowing all that it would make a nice investment. I might actually be able to make a sizable chunk of the money I've dropped in my garden back if I went down that path lol

Yeah, that’s as legit as it gets. That cut is from the original grower. He’s on this forum as @ferret...

Thanks mate, that's great news.  @ferret your mother plant is beautiful and an absolute puppy mill lol  Poor jokes aside it really does look amazing and it's easy to see why everyone wants it.

Now I just need to find someone who wants to buy an organ or two so I can make it mine :)

  16. Thanks Humbolt :)

My hands are cramping from all the work I did in the garden today so sorry for the potato pics but they were the best I could manage and I'm too proud to not share lol

I got this beast from a guy online after asking for blue cacti.  It's called Tripsis Peru 'seed grown'.  It's a good 4x fatter than any other cactus I have and blue so naturally I'm in love.

Last up is a Peruvianus called John that has a little bit of damage on it.  The desert plants of avalon chick on youtube said tichs get those kinds of scabs because of the alkaloids which has me quite excited for John and the fact he's quite blue doesn't hurt any either :)
