I was just looking out the back of my place at a termite nest in a tree, and it got me to thinking, is there any direct competition between wood loving fungi and termites. I've read/seen docos on ants(and maybe termites) that use fungal gardens in the bottom of their nests to digest cellulose from leaves and wood to feed the colony, and after googling the fungi seem to have their own Genus, Termitomyces. However I was thinking more along the line that wood lovers and termites that aren't in a symbiotic relationship, they may be basically competing for the same resource, dead timber, in the same environment, underground/inside the timber with high humidity. Do you find them in the same places? or does one preclude the other? Does anyone with a garden for wood loving shrooms find it attracts termites? On a wider note, what about other insects or animals how do they influence the local fungi? Apart from the obvious connection between cows/horses and certain species. You mushroom hunters out there do you ever notice anything eating mushrooms in the wild? (apart from people) Does it happen a lot?

Thanks for the info Zed. I'm almost a complete noob to mushroom growing(or hunting for that matter) the glowing ones might be something to try out when I get the hang of it. Be interesting to work out if it's just the strain or maybe what it's growing on/near that gets it to produce more of whatever chemical is making it grow.

Anyone know what's the lifetime of any Glowing mushrooms are? ... well more like how long are they likely to fruit and how long does the glow last?

I had a friend give me a native lime about 3 years ago, not sure if its a finger lime or another native lime, pretty sure it came from the Gap Nursery on brisbane's north side. I don't know if it was grown from seed or a cutting, but it was about 2 inches high with a very thin/fine stem and tiny leaves when i got it, seems tiny even for a cutting so maybe they're germinating seed there. They're Greening Australia so they might be happy to share knowledge if you email them. My lime has certainly struggled, its only grown to be only about a foot tall in the last couple of years, and still tiny leaves. Truthfully though I've been pretty neglectful so maybe its not indicative of growing from seed. I think i should probably help it out a bit as it's survived despite my neglect, but I'm not really sure the best way to go about giving it a boost. Any suggestions would be welcome. Don't expect it to fruit anytime soon, just want it to grow and be the plant it wants to be.
