What did you do to your cacti today?

they do don't they, well i dont know why they don't look anything like any of my other bridgesii but then the others are somewhat smaller and most are very much younger , and after i become a non- noob maybe I'll agree more for now, the tips upon close examination - to me look like all the macrogonus I've seen in pictures before but you're not the only one to say they look like bridgesii they are very blue if thats anything to go by? and they were labelled and sold/bought as macrogonus. how do you identify a macrogonus? or is there already a thread on it? I can appreciate some bridgesii look very different to eachother , I just got a flowering one that seems to have the spines of a validus

What did you do in your sacred garden today?

I saw a tip on a youtube cactus video for ridding ants; a few drops of cinnamon bark oil (the one that's the strongest) on a cotton bud. And where the ants cross paths; is where I put them last year and haven't had any ants since, they are uk ants though , only tiny things...

What did you do in your sacred garden today?

the 13x13x13cm pots arrived yesterday so I re-potted all my salvias into one of them, repotted the huge carthagenensis collection - all sold to me as viridis by uk sellers ..in another same with the cacao if you can see it down there and the 8 viridis rooted leaf cuts - from the one uk source of true viridis so far I replaced the soil and re-potted most of the others into fresh pots the same size they were in 11x11x12.5cm the calea, psy nervosa, voa africana. Also into one of those size pots went my 2 muricata seedlings I just added a top dressing to the 2 tunkunaka and left the alicias and coffea as they were then i watered them slowly in with fresh rain using a 100ml barrel I wrote some labels for the ones that didn't have one... i mixed the soil using a handful of horticultural charcoal, 1 scoop of horticultural grit, 1 scoop of perlite, 1 scoop of john innes seed, 4 scoops of cheap equivalent of miracle grow compost with one scoop of aquarium sand folded into it and a tip of a scoop of fish, blood and bone and went and dug last years bucket of phostrogen out in prep for every third downpour and every third watering for everything else in containers umm... I fed the nicotiana tabacum and brugmansias with miracle grow in rain checked germinatia; the cacti, ophthalmocentra and datura metel seedlings - all doing well I bonsai pruned the 2 mimosa tenuifloras fed all the acacias indoor and out, pinched the tips on the passifloras indoor and out. In a gap in the rains i went outside and fertilized the acre and it's perimeter also half potted up two huge flowering trichocereus that arrived today

What did you do to your cacti today?

Today my large vmff (v m'fkn fat-not varigated) flowering knuthianus-looking plant, which takes the lead for the fattest 'bridgesii' I ever saw in the flesh..so i potted it up, the spines lower down even remind me of validus a little with their almost parallel downward spines... My large flowering pachanoi cutting arrived too and i just balanced that in the knuther vandross pot till I can be arsed to pot it up in perlite with a layer of stones for stability. opened all the windows of the sun room after last nights mighty wash -precautionary blastages too.

    How Long to Sprout Thread

it is the uk here and I go into cactus seed mode the last 2 winters since discovering them and having fuck all else to do in winter... ....at least our cold slays off a lot of bugs and illness...and this winter flew by thanks to cacti germinating with bottom heat... so being without bottom heat isnt really an option for me and is completely necessary beyond all shadow of a doubt - and then some, if i think about last years winter being around -16C in feb and then the freak snow even heavier in march2013! and they make germination very efficient indeed, I find cold to be the greatest inhibitor of germination here, it beats heat hands down every time without fail. and bottom heat is more of a constant reliable than nature here - so long as you dont have a crap propogator/heat pad that will over-cook your seeds. but yeah since the germination spilled over to spring this year im finding i need to turn them off in the day for a few hours most days all day long on the sunny days..except the last 2 days which required them to stay on all day and all night but this is greenhouse effect that is making it warm enough on the days that it is warm. maybe next month i can switch em off for the last time of the year seeing as its a mild year so far... but its only 8 watts per propogator on the 2 new ones and 12 watts for 2 the old ones... thats the same power as a 40w ye olde light bulb. I already wrote back to west seed farm and they said what do want us to do about it? lol and with the description on the listing..., and now I'm a little wiser: I dont think I'd want some replacement seeds anyway - red flowering clumping validus? with a pic of a white flowering validus?... and if theyre world seed supply too... I have species that I wouldn'tve been able to get anywhere else thanks to them. they were the first international supplier i tried after giving up with the rip-off uk ones I might even have seemed a dick to em because by then I was pretty much expecting everybody to be a rip off and hadnt found a decent uk supplier by then.. but... they cared, were patient and polite and even when i was frustrated; explained clearly and helped me germinate some of the trickier Acacias luckily all their other non cactus species with the exception of white ayawaska, for me anyway, are awesome for germination. and its a fourth fail (big mac/cuz/validus/white aya) when all the others maybe 12-15 or so species were very high score,... so 4 fails in about 13-17 species... and the white aya are still in because their sisters the muricata , from the same sowings time , just sprouted 2 so it might even turn out to be a success also for the white aya... ....can't win em all but they came close enough , especially with 3 types of aya I don't fancy my chances if I were to try growing them in uk with no propogator/artificial heat, even people die from cold here incidentally, they're now in a 50watt capability propogator with a thermostat so it is only on if it drops below a pre-set temperature, and the height of this propogator is 35 inches...so far. the 50w will come in handy when its so cold that even the other propogators at full steam just wont be warm enough to germinate seeds. - i could understand if it was Arizona, Libya or somethn or if i was a careless grower that didnt check regularly but hell, its colder in Michigan than here, I'll bet they love their bottom heat, and anywhere north of there which is a lot of people. Also in my home built propogator I have a mini computer thing controling temps and lights , with bottom heat mat which is excellent too. if i did away with all the bottom heat , my plants would die pretty fast i reckon. So... if you need bottom heat for seedlings..., use it responsibly and safely to accelerate/assist and save their piddley asses while theyre cute if you don't need it... count your lucky stars and grow a krillion more than we can?, walk round scattering seeds everywhere? -whilst wearing a spore printed hat and when its cold like in uk , using bottom heat can give more control, precision and accuracy than when you have nature's heat fluctuations like somewhere where its warmer...., meaning on smaller scales; we might just get way better results, faster. perhaps this is why Canada, the Netherlands and Germany grow so world class well? - they have pretty similar weather to uk in parts of their countries and seem to have gotten it off to very fine art indeed.

aww shame they werent the elusive "most common my ass" Panaeolus cinctulus/subalteatus Ive not seen one in my whole life , and until 3 years ago; had been a hard working mushroom hunter , all year round for a span of 7 years I love butterfly panaeolus though, there are hours of fun to be had; finding them on the lawn/spore printing them with the kids, showing them the mottled gills and such and knowing full well there isn't a poisonous panaolus in existance so letting them touch the mushrooms, dissect them centrally and learn all the different parts, even taste I.D.'ing them in full confidence that they are safe mushrooms, growing from a perfectly natural lawn that has been since the 60s; which is a welcome break from the norm of "if in doubt , leave it out" and so reliable in fruiting all year, the memory never fades for them.
