Hi sabers, if decided I want to try grow some shiitaki mushrooms. I purchased some dowells on eBay and did a little research online and found out that in Japan they like to grow shiitake mushrooms in oak logs, so I thought if I'm Gona try this I'll buy a oak log. I went to a saw mill and purchased an oak log cost me £8 and it's heavy as fu@k nearly pulled my back lifting it into my car! Apparently if all goes well I can expect to be harvesting for up to 5 years :-) Been a newby to this do any of you guys have any tips on growing these? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have not yet drilled holes to make the log colonised just trying to make sure I'm doing things correct.

Hi sab friendsthisim is my 1st give away here, I have some Lactuca virosa seed wanting to share with the community here. My plant is in flower at the moment and iv collected many of seeds and their is still plenty of flowers yet to open. This plant is a biennial the 1st stage it grows lots of green leaves which can be eaten as a salad. The next faseis where it flowers with tall flowers, and is said to be slightly sedative when eaten. IM a bit skint at the moment so would have to kindly ask for you to cover the postage. Seeds will be posted out in a padded envelope for protection. Please reply on this post and a PM would be good too. Of corse please check your customs regulations before agreeing to accept the seeds.

Don't think shooting it out is a way to go lol thought about some sort of shade cloth or something. Iv considered planting a conifer or something like that but I rent the property and the landlord is a dick and doesn't maintain the property well so don't plan on living here for too long!

Yeah man the weather over here is crazy, this time of year it is usually cold but we have been getting around 14 Celsius and it is usually below 10. I'm not sure what has been munching them they wasn't any snail/slug trails on the lophs or pots. I think I will do like you say leave them to fend for their self.

I went into my greenhouse on Friday to find that something had munched on my lophs! I usually bring them indoors over winter mainly because I didn't have a greenhouse until this year. I thaught I'd leave them there for over wintering this year but when I saw something had taken a fancy to them I decided to bring them indoors. Will this effect them from growing to their full potential next year? Iv never had this problem with them befor,

Hi interbeing, I'm intrsted in growing some Trichocereus, but iv never grown them before, so I don't know which are the cool ones to have. Could you recomend 1 of the seed packs that you have left for sale?

Awesome, and has given me some motivation to collect some acorns, and other tree seeds to try get back into growing bonsai again. Only got 1 left that needs a new pot and a root trim in next spring.

Nice work man. I'm very keen on trying grow light's but knowing in this area is small. Do they cost a lot to run? I do have a little fluro light thing that is great for seedlings, but it's quite expensive to run. I'm interested in trying LEDs so this topic will be very useful.

I use coco core and mixed some fish tank gravel in for good drainage and to let air to the roots. Like what coolname said about give them a gentle squeeze if they feel soft they are ok, it all depends on the weather to how much water they need. I feed my lophs every other week from spring, just find a liquid feed that is relatively low in nitrogen and has micro-nutrients in it. I use chempak cactus and succulent feed and that works fine for me.
