Germinating pituri and growing
BreakingBarrett replied to Meditator's topic in Australian Native Plants
Sorry for the late reply. They tend to grow out in the desert, not too far from where I am, which means they would thrive in sand type soils. As for germination, I'm not sure what would be the best medium, but when re-potting a sandy mix should work well. Let me know how you go with them, as I plan to grow them out here in the ground. -
Thanks Ceres Yeah, they are kit set - bought from big w I think. The messier the better. Our bark yard is all over the place as we bought the house next door back in the late 90's, so there are a fair few separate messy sections.

Just took them off I left one closed, to dry out, and opened the other. Quite an interesting structure inside. The seeds are surrounded by a thin layer of silk like fibers.

The distribution map shows that it grows out this way, but I wouldn't know about whether it would be safe or not.

Yeah I went out for a bush walk looking for it today, along with datura - I remember seeing datura a little while back, before I got into gardening. Came across a castor oil plant for the first time out here. I saw the pods just over the edge of a little hill in front of me and instantly thought "Datura, Yes!" Then I saw the leaves and wasn't excited anymore. Also found a pretty cool succulent, so I took a cutting and have potted it out the back. Here it is:

There are quite a few creek beds that surround my town and I go out bush here and there with my dad - he is an outback landscape painter. So there is quite a bit of natural sand, and plenty of red dirt. I'm in saltbush country lol, on the SA/NSW border.

Thanks PH I enjoy being part of this community and I'll be sure to upload more photos of the progress of my seedlings - mimosa, cali poppies, t.pach - that are currently germinating Going on another nature walk through the bush to take photos and to see if I can find some interesting species that I can get clipping of for my garden.

With Halloween just around the corner that is a great theme for the garden I'm going to plant some interesting arid species that aren't cacti, such as; duboisia and others Though, I will surround the trough with echinopsis, loph, euphorbia, ferocactus, myrtillocactus, oputina and others that catch my eye.

Amazing garden you have there! Love your pach brain. Will have to try and find one of them for myself.

What did you do in your sacred garden today?

This morning I started setting up my 52ltr tub/green house and have been monitoring the sun to see where the best spot to put it will be, as It gets really hot out this way. I'm pretty sure I've found the optimal spot to get morning and afternoon sun for my mimosas that are germinating. I watered my acacia baileyana purpurea, which has started getting some purple foliage I also made an arid species seedling mix out of: 1 part premium potting soil 1 part mixed sized river sand 1 part 3-5mm river sand 2 parts compost handful or two of agr. lime Letting it sit in the sun today to dry it out, then will plant some cacti and other arid species over the coming day. -
Vines from far west NSW

Thanks for the reply tarenna. You seem to be spot on -
Is anyone able to tell me whether these photos are of San Pedro Cactus or anyother Cactus.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I bought it from a nursery, there isn't a bunnings where I live as it is a pretty small outback town. It was the largest cactus they had (about 16in) and I thought it looked like a Trichocereus ssp. SWIM has 22 t.pach seeds which have been germinating, two per pot, for the past week and is hoping they all survive.
