I've read that poplar, alder, possibly ash and walnut and a few others (obviously sugar maple)............but your'd have to double check..search....before you give them a try :- ) I have tried some of my alder and ash trees....but they were pretty dry...not sap givers............the canadians apparently had a bad maple syrup season ...global warming? too warm?....anyway some farmers tapped their birches as an alternative for income....I guess they are not so heat sensitive..........a traditional thing...........but you need bucket loads of maple sap to boil down into syrup.........and considerably more bucket loads of birch sap to get the equivlent in syrup..................I tried boiling down a good pot full last season............and even when it was reduced to a few teaspoons after hours of boiling..............it was still a long way from being that sweet maple syrup.............I just enjoy drinking it straight first thing in the cool of the morning..........its pure nectar......well 1% anyway :- ) I'll see if I can post a pic................there is a recipe for making alcohol from it ...maybe just leaving it in the sun, or not rinseing your collecting bottles regularly....your'd need to search...... for anyone trying birch sap........ cut 1-2 mm off the end of the branch every 2nd day ....just to keep the sap flowing freely

Echios or O.galapagia...I'd love some seed of those ...total lust (but I guess they are 100's of years old).......couldn't imagine finding those in NZ....yeah Spine we are diffentatly reverse seasons....has some advantages.....Texas is big right?....so I guess there are all kinds of climate ...from hot deset to dry/wet cold mountains?,,,i've never been there... ...i'm suspecting the lower yellowing Op. maybe Opuntia stricta.taking into account what SallyD (id) was saying about hybridising freely and soil con. and look at some images..................

hi eatfoo...............yeah its a 1' pup coming out of base of the tall yellow one......(stress I guess)........I was wondering if it was a spiny trich....1" spines on it......... thanks SallyD........there are diffinatly 2 different opuntias in the picture...............the one with the thick pads has golfball size red fruit (right side in pic below)................if your's is a spineless cultivator .......does that make your's a Opuntia ficus-indica?...........my fruit doen't look right for that.... heres a pic of the 2 different fruits from opuntias above so seems to be a concenus..............the unhealthy tall with pup is probably peruvianoid maybe Pachanoid........................it apparently has white flowers...................but so many do............The people had heaps of them but said it never set fruit.............so I'm guessing they were all clones and don't self fertilse.................I should be able to x it with a few plants this season and see what the fruit looks like................its hard figuring these out ...they all look alike.....................thanks all
