for all those considering getting this in under the radar a word of warning. i had a pachnoi crest(10cm) cutting sent to me from USA, i had ordered seeds but a confusion had occurred and the vendor sent a cutting instead. It was obviously falsely declared by vendor and both AQIS and Customs assumed i had done this before. Both customs and quarantine ended up on my doorstep. Search warrants were issued for my two places of residence, my computer was seized to check all email conversations between vendor and I. I was found innocent and computer was returned a week later but it was a very close call so i DO NOT recommend trying anything similar. plant was destroyed. and now i'm black flagged by both departments so must be extra careful about what i try to purchase.

the bare minimum would have been to have the sign removed, if the exact sign had been in my front lawn or the front lawn of a church for that matter it would have been deemed offensive and a removal order would be issued and that would just be for the sign not someone also standing with the sign and verbally abusing all that pass. i would be arrested if i stood in public and called people sluts at the top of my voice, they should have been cautioned to tone it down monitored and if they continue to cross the line of decency then shut them down.

only one that is still nice looking the rest have either died or look so battle scarred they look more dead than alive. i think a couple more of the normal green plants are starting to show variegation as they get older.

the $125 will only cover the application to import ??number of plants next you have to pay for them to be housed in a certified quarantine area $$??? now the inspectors charge you for everytime they inspect which will be a number of times over months i believe.$$??? import duties $$??? but im still game to contribute

there is a seller on ebay from NSW that has been releasing nice plants rather sporadically but it's such a sort after plant it is hard to buy/win them at a reasonable price, i haven't yet.if you put a search watch on ebay it will email you if one is listed.

root pruning is a definite yes and depending on the size of plant can be done yearly or every couple of years and yes they can set fruit but it is not always reduced in size.

there is no migration of characteristics either up or down but in rare cases a chimera is born which is a combination of both stock and scion. a new form begins to grow usually from around the graft join. Google image cactus chimera some of them are way cool looking.

Shruman i have the scop that's nicknamed Hulk pushing about 10 buds now so if you think you have a diff plant i'll do you a pollen trade if you like.

as the plant has mainly been propagated by the nursery industry wouldnt it be possible that the first plants propagated were from a lower strength plant(ala ditch weed) and have had the actives bred out of them and most subsequent purchases have been of nursery plants so are devoid of sufficient levels of actives? when i first heard of this plant (15?)years ago this was the first thing i considered when trying to find suitable material to try(which i have never done)because any literature i read back then said it was a highly hybridised plant bred specifically for its leaf pattern/colour so i surmised anything i found at local nurseries or young gardens would be crap i needed to find a.... for want of a better term "historical" garden that had an old original plant. i can honestly say i have never seen a tall variety such as mutants in gardens or nurseries here in South Australia though my gf does remember her nanna had very large plants in New South Wales(which she's only just told me )seems the short clump variety is the preferred form by the horticultural industry and has been for possibly decades so the gene pool could be really polluted. great read so far. oh and i think it's got this far cos teotz is banned at the moment his/her exuberance certainly would have de-railed this by now.

dont know,dont know and ummm.... dont know the tall one i got of the net years ago from a company claiming it to be a monstrose trich( a few people here have it) yeah i was giving you pollen this season glad you made this thread and bumped my memory dont need it my self i've not got enough room for too many experiments at once. from the plants i have seen over the years(some really nice big plants here in adelaide)i would guess the two forms have been crossed as i have seen plants consisting of both growth patterns on the same plant. ive also got a large(15"tall9"wide) crested/monstrose cereus recently that hasnt flowered yet but if it does would be interesting to chuck into the mix as i've not seen many crests form on monstrose cereus.

Love your "nishiki" def the way to go crossing her as apparently the red forms are the strongest so you'll def get some coloured seedlings from the cross. Good luck

Wow love the crests Tip for growing your bonsai quicker-leave them in standard pots and train/prune them till they are more advanced then pot up into bonsai pots, you get much faster growth and in one year can obtain quite a good head start.
