  1. ever considered how selfish that sounds? I mean, why is an individual's desire for a child overriding the risk of a life of misery for another human being?

I have an aunt who has downs and she was told she had a 60% chance of having kids with downs. The first one turned out fine, but the second was severely downs. It made the life of the whole family miserable, including the first child and obviously the downs child. But at least the selfish bitch had the 2 kids she always wanted :BANGHEAD2:

Not that the issue of this topic is quite as severe as downs or even as high a risk, but it's just the self centered mentality that gets me.

so in [downs] you mean down-syndrome?

or a [downy] not sure what is politically correct here? or the difference?

  2. So, this is apparently the first undeniable example of forward thought in non human animals (I disagree with this, what about animals who plan their pack hunting, or those that knock down fruits and leave them uneaten to ferment to get drunk...) but its pretty interesting anyway, and may go to suggest that some (won't say all because I'm sure there must be some that are happy to be pampered) animals really don't like zoos regardless of what the keepers say.

  7. AFAIK you cannot get HL2 or games based on that engine to work using Wine or WineX (Cedega) or Crossover, because they use DX10 while most emulation layers are only kitted out with DX9.

I play CS1.6 fine on WineX. Like it better than CS:S anyway!

    ok some questions :)

what distro do you use sina? ...and does WineX = Cedega?

im still trying to get my head around getting any game to work even linux native games like americas army I dunno :scratchhead:

I will keep working at though i will never go back to :uzi: XPoo thats for sure

  9. I feel that in terms of bushfires we need to always be prepared for the worst case cenario rather than hoping for the best. So, I am not surprised by the fury of these fires, and neither are emergency workers who witnessed the ash wednesday fires.

I think it is wrong to say people were prepared because it implies that everything is fine and dandy and we should keep doing exactly what we have been. I think it is very important to say right now that people were not prepared, or at the very least to say they were not adequately prepared. Only by doing so can you instill a will to actually improve whatever was not adequate. For as long as we pretend that a garden hose is an appropriate fire plan we are doomed to get into the same situation sometime in the future. Like I have been saying here, this disaster needs to trigger a fundamental shift in building codes, town planning, and community awareness that will last for at least a few decades so that we don't have to repeat this every few years. Just like we advanced townplanning and building codes to deal with flooding to the point that you can only get DAs and insurance if you comply, the same needs to happen with fire safety. Even if every house needs to have a fire proof toilet cubicle or something like that, so that there is a refuge that will protect life, that would be one possible solution. Personally I think a combination of sprinklers, firehose and independent pump should be a compulsory minimum. If you have a firehose in your brick living room you just can't die.

this i agree with.... a concrete fire bunker in the back yard put into the building code might not be silly http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0...5006301,00.html now this guy was prepared in advance still lost his home but his family survived

  10. By all accounts the fire front was moving about a km in four minutes, the radiant heat was so severe houses were just exploding before the fire even reached them. Stories of people trying to put out fires with buckets only for the bucket to melt in their hands. The ember storm was so severe embers would flow into every crack and crevice, going in the cracks between the door-jams, etc. The fire had stolen all the oxygen people couldn't breath. People died in cars trying to outrun it (the tyres just melted and stranded them), people died in baths trying to protect themselves, people just died no matter how savvy they were. A sprinkler system on the roof and a box of matches in your pocket would have been useless.

from what i have heard first hand from friends and family this has been the case..this was no back yard hedge fire more like a fire storm

Strangebrew: I guess it's a last minute thing, there's already a fire upwind of you, so you light one at your feet, it will burn out a patch going away from you, you wait until it's moved away and then take shelter in the burnt area behind it.

be caarefull about casually carrying matches and a can of fuel around with you down here at the moment it will not look good!!!
