Does anyone on this forum actually grow Aztekiums? fucking cunts of things to grow from my experience. only had success with grafts and even then...

I agree with Zelly, if you're going to buy a book on Cacti buy the new lexicon. This book has the most up to date names, not great for Echinopsis/Trichos as the work hasn't been done, but a huge amount of the taxonomy is solid. It is worth the money!

First time coir user, anything to watch out for?
prier replied to Quixote's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I haven't used coir in cacti mixes, really don't see the point. What has got me worried here is that you mention your Tricho's are inside. If you're going to grow cacti inside (this does not come recommended), make sure they are in an exceptionally well draining mix. You only need to water half as much as your outdoor plants. I think coir would be a bad idea in this situation. -
3. Coryphantha spp. or Thelocactus spp. 4. Mammillaria rekoi ssp. leptacantha or Mammillaria huitzilopochtli ssp. niduliformis (such a rad name) 5. Mammillaria magnimamma type 6. Mammillaria pectinidera ssp. solisoides or M. pectinidera ssp. pectinidera Does it have yellow flowers?

Haha. I was a little drunk last night. This thread is for beginners, have a look through the id forum to see the stuff I'm talking about. I can't be bothered finding photos, it's not hard. Also what about afp? This topic barely ever comes up on the forum.

Myron Kimnach certainly has a way with words.
prier replied to trucha's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
haha. Backeberg loves creating new species, his work is very particular. -
maybe Matucana weberbaueri, I don't know that genus well, just having a flick through the new cactus lexicon.

Don't get to excited yet, you could always do something silly like. get lazy and try and kill two birds with one stone. oh, there's a small mealy infestation on this cactus, oh, there's a little bit of algae growing in that seedling punnet. hardly enough to warrant making up a whole watering can of rogor or a whole watering can of algacide. yeah, may as well just mix up a bunch of Copper Oxychloride and throw in an extra helpful dash of dimethoate into a nine litre watering can. then water in all the cactus seedlings and a couple of random things around the house. then, well everything turns too mush, that whole 6 months of growth, all those crazy hybrids, gone.... um, yeah be safe with ya seedlings, and don't count ya chickens till they've flowered...

I used to do this regularly in the warm weather, it was more a habit of forgetfulness rather than something I planned. I think it is fine, as long as your not watering in the heat of the day, or when your plants are in direct sun, anytime is alright. I'm not sure which is optimum, as cacti are doing a lot of stuff at night i'm curious if it's better at dawn/dusk or at night. hmmm.. . I'm going to do some research and experimenting...

Terracotta pots and tips for the cactus-confused
prier replied to gtarman's topic in Cacti & Succulents
There is some really good info in this thread. I'd just like to discuss the terracotta vs plastic debate. Terracotta is great to grow in but a real shit to repot. The plant roots tend to stick to the sides of the pot making it hard to remove. I usually use a blunt knife or machete to get them out. They are also expensive and break easily. Other than that terracotta is great. Now plastic. Black plastic heats up, heats up a lot, never water your plants if you are expecting some really hot weather, the roots will stew. It is cheap and readily available. If you live in a big city where the council still does the old fashioned hard rubbish thing. You will never run out of 6 and 8 inch pots again. White plastic is awesome! it doesn't heat up anywhere near as much as black, all that white goodness just soaks up the heat but that power comes with a price. White plastic degrades really quickly. Most colored plastics are really tacky but I really like the terracotta colored ones, they don't heat up as much as black and don't degrade anywhere near as quickly as white. They are however a bit rare. Anyway, just a few thoughts. Great thread! -
Could be G. pflanzii or it could be G. saglionis, who know's they both look so damn similar when babies.

A few cacti identifications
prier replied to BreakingBarrett's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
The first few pics are Echinopsis, a huge amount of the Echinopsis available in aus are hybrids. I'm not great at IDing em. Always remember to ask the original grower. The last pic is a Trichocereus spachianus. There is no Echinopsis name equivalent, technically the plant doesn't exist. the original type specimen was lost. -
glaucus peruvianoid name id?
prier replied to DiscoStu's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Where did you get it from? It looks like ROSEII2 to me -
18 year old cactus, help me ID!
prier replied to eiac's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
The first plant it a weed. The second one is a Pachycereus weberii seedling, those things are super slow. Your's has been grown outdoors in full weather. If you grow them in a hothouse out of the weather they look much nicer. It should come out with new, lovely red spines when in growth. -
Very Cool Hybrid Trich- What do you think it is?
prier replied to Getafix's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
There are only so many nurseries, serious cacti gardens and collectors in this country. Most places will have a good idea of what their plants are. Ask the seller, this is the best advice I can give, if they didn't grow it themselves find out who did. It may well be a random hybrid from and old garden or a nursery, the grower might not know what it is but they will be able to tell you what flowering size plants they have and when they flower. which can help narrow down the possibilities. If you have to resort to the internet, mention where you got the plant, even if it's just a town or even which state it was found in can help. I know people hate giving away their "secrets" but knowing where the plant came from greatly helps to identify it. -
Sorry to be a downer but that definitely is not Stetsonia coryne, it could be a number of things. Any flowers this season? Seeing a flower would greatly narrow it down. Also where about's did you acquire this plant, just a rough idea will help.

Turbinicarpus pseudomacrochele?
prier replied to terracottacactus's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Could i see a photo of the tag's that came with the plants? Are they from vic? Dan's Plants sold a bucket load of Gymnocalycium saglionis and G. pflanzii to bunnings a few years ago and you still see them around, it's likely one of the two. Then again Gymnocalycium is a big genus. it may have come from Paradisia Nursery which is likely as they also grow Turbs, whereas Dan doesn't. Give it a bigger pot in a well draining mix and give it a real good feed. I'd recommend slow release synthetic stuff personally. Once it gets a bit bigger and flowers I could have another go at IDing it. -
Is this sunburn or over watering on my cacti?

Is this sunburn or over watering on my cacti?
prier replied to gr33ntea's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I recently spent far too much time on imgur. tonight i decided enough is enough, i have wasted far too much time on this nonsense. i'm never going back to imgur again... anyway. your 1st trich is burnt as shit, my guess would be that it was grown in a very shady spot and moved into full sun on a hot day. that doesn't usually happen if a plant is used to full sun. just leave it, don't cut out the burn, keep it in partial sun and in a few years you won't be able to tell. the second plant is fucked. just throw it in the bin now. and the third is fine, just needs a good water and should probably go into a better draining mix. that plant usually goes kinda red in full sun. -
Any idea what these two yellow cacti are?
prier replied to terracottacactus's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
The first plant is a Gymnocalycium sp. the second is a Rebutia sp. Neither of them are variegated. They are both in desperate need of some nitrogen, and possibly a sunnier position. -
Mutant, is that a Trichocereus (Echinopsis) purpureopilosus? the pink flowered tricho/echino/lobivia looking thing?

Awesome shots. Quite a lot of my plants in there, haha. -
When bridgesii's are planted in a clay soil along with regular trimming they will have a semi monstrose appearance. Generally when you cut back a plant the remaining stems will change the amount of ribs they have.

Succulent identification - a mesemb ?
prier replied to mutant's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
And yes you can take cuttings. Cheiridopsis are very easy to grow.
