  1. The pumpking is going in the ground this weekend... it's been sitting in it's pot, meditating until now, waiting for the right time to go in (or more likely for me to get around to planting it). I've noticed though that it may be sprouting flowers already, even before the vine has started to grow. I wonder if this is a problem? Should I whip the flower buds off when I transplant?

I'm glad I didn't bung it in the ground before this though - the weather has been abysmal...

  2. I fought with Telstra for years, $600 bills reduced to the capped $60 - time and time again, in the end, I played back a recording of them saying "We're sorry sir, this will never happen again", then asked them the next time it happened - "Why was I lied to by your customer service representative?" I told them I'd take this to court and plaster it all over the media, the internet, 60 minutes, today tonight, youtube etc... if they didn't fix it once and for all. For the past 5-6 years, I haven't had an issue with them at all, and they'll even ring me if there's a better deal on than what I'm currently on. The power of negative advertising is huge - use it if you can.

If you think Telstra is bad - wait till you get a $1,200+ bill from Lumo/Origin etc... and see how you go fighting it... no chance in hell - the energy companies have got you stitched...

  3. The world would be a better place if kids were taught to talk to strangers. Think long and hard about what it means to teach kids 'don't talk to strangers' and what would happen, (in both the short term and long term) if this one little rule was changed...

  4. You're surrounded by 'work' people, not by choice, but by circumstance. They feel the need to give you their opinion on life the universe and everything, for an extended amount of time, even after you've given every subtle body signal in the known human repertoire that you're not interested in anything they have to say... Yet there they are, standing in front of you, mouth moving, hazy glaze over their sleeping eyes, blurting out repetitive (dis)information they gleamed from the television last night, constantly asking for your opinion on subjects that simply should not exist, and by doing so, they spread their weeds into your mind garden...

I smile and nod because they're just doing what they know, but my soul dies a little each time...

  5. Find your nearest doof and stomp on the dance floor - The person standing next to me always has the answers to the questions I'm asking myself, and sometimes, I have the answer to theirs. I've just spent 3 days out the bush dancing with 1000's of people I've never met before, but feel like I've known all my life. I'd lend them my body for a day and know it would come back in the same or better shape. Good fun, great people, fantastic tunes and a lot of smiles - festival folk are my family and I love them, they make their own world and it's out of this world...

  6. I'll be really interested to see how you go with duboisia hopwoodii BB - I've managed to get a seed or 2 to germinate, but I had to go away and they perished... Do live near any natural stands?

  7. Awesome stuff - I love the way you've used various things like baby baths, throughs, buckets, bowls and anything else that can hold dirt - gives a really rustic homely feel. A few fairy lights amongst the succulents and it'd be a real 'witches garden' - when we were kids the neighbour had heaps of succulents and we thought she was a witch :)

What sort of cactus are you planning for the trough?

  8. They look like fantastic tools Got - I think with 12 trays in the shelves I'm gonna spend the $3 and invest.

So - a bit reluctantly, I've taken some shots of my dungeon dwelling Frankenstein freaks that suffered though my learning curve... Maybe someone can learn what not to do by seeing these, or maybe if you see yours heading in this direction you'll be able to rectify the problem before they get shunted to the dungeon of disasters...

    Etiolated

Lack of nutrients - Left in the container too long - Put in too bright light - These are surprisingly 18 months old! They're still alive and I'm in the process of picking them out and transplanting them...

The repair centre - these looked the same as above but are on the mend after re-potting, it'll take awhile but they will spring back.

I learned a lot though these failures. The etiolated ones above all fell over like Got mentioned and I didn't know about gravel or pumice or scoria - I did try a few toothpicks as stakes but it was a futile exercise. Get onto any problems you notice early. I could have saved the sunburnt ones because I saw them gently whitening, then 2 hours later they were yellow and red, burnt and wilted.

The biggest thing I learned was what Ceres mentioned, light is a killer. I've now found the 4 sweet spots in my yard.

    1. Full sun
    2. Dappled shade all day
    3. Morning Dappled Sun for 2-3 hours
    4. Full shade all day with bright ambient light

    4. is currently where all these little Frankies are living, 3. is where my latest hardened off cacti are, 2. is where I have the larger seedlings, 1. is for the big boys

Hopefully someone will see the signs of one of the above issues and be able to fix the problem before it gets too bad. :)
