  1. There was a post fairly recently, I can't remember if it was me that instigated it or someone else about Vitamins being taken up by plants. It went into the pore size of the roots and that they're not big enough to let big molecules in, it's possible some human medicine metabolites may not be able to be taken up by the plants anyway? Just a theory... someone here would know the answer though, I just wish I could remember which thread it was... I pee in my pots, but generally just splash it about so no one pot gets a lot - never really considered my mood at the time though, generally when I'm peeing I'm pretty happy anyway :)

  2. Regardless of the moral/social/ethical/spiritual bonding behind handshakes, I can't help but think of the 'do you wash after you wipe' thread - There were a significant amount of people that don't bother washing their hands even after number 2's... Then you've got the nail biters. I notice the stubbly fingers coming towards me for a grippy shake and wonder 'Are you also a non wiper-washer? and if so, do you have particles in your mouth?' Do I now have particles and spit on me?

I have a secret weapon when it comes to this issue... I'm left handed, so the chance of something from your firm handshake, going in my mouth, is somewhat reduced. The same goes in reverse, so you can thank me later for my innate ability to keep a lot of my dirty habits from passing to you :)

A few times with the manly handshake - or the deliberate 'I'll squeeze your hand as hard as I can and It'll be really funny people' I have asked to swap hands and squeezed the living shite out of someone's hand till they drop to their knees. The thing is this; I live in a right handed world, and as such, my right hand does get 80+% of the workout that yours does, but my left hand gets 100% from me all the time, you righties use your left hand much less than I use my right. It's not something that many people notice (unless they're a gifted lefty) but if you get the chance, have a squeeze off with a lefty and you'll be less likely to go into the 'I can squeeze harder than you game' at least with your left hand...

(Note: Many hands were harmed in the making of this deduction, if you try this at home, please wipe first)

Edit: Oops, I wrote 'wipe' when I meant 'wash' - eg, do you wash after you wipe...

  3. I think any further attention drawn this won't help a lot, is it possible this thread is worth putting in the restricted section? Sometimes it feels like the more attention this topic receives, the more it'll happen and the more likely it is that some authoritative doofus might just decide to poison the lot of them and whallah 'problem solved'. Our community respects these trees, so it'd be nice if they became lost and forgotten to the greater world, known only to the few that love and admire them... I guess that's the 'shove it under the carpet and hope it goes away attitude' but it's hard to decide how to go about this one. It only takes a few to ruin it for the many.

  4. So I've found out that where I plan on growing the winning pumpkin in this competition, there are regular morning visits from our native hopping friends - roo's...

    - Do they eat pumpkin leaves??

I searched and got as far as "Do Kangaroos " and the preselected results list had

    - Do Kangaroos fart

    - Do Kangaroos eat weed

But I'm unable to find out if kangaroos enjoy eating pumpkin plants... This will change the ball game significantly for me if they do, as I'll have to erect a substantial fence...

Edit: Just confirmed - Kangaroos love juicy green fresh pumpkin leaves...

  5. Ok - So I'm thinking it's over as quick as it begun; Can someone tell if this is white mould spots, or is this what Kombucha does when it gets going and starts to grow? It doesn't smell offensive, slightly tangy, mildly vinegary but not 'off' as such.

    post-11189-0-18442400-1376555188_thumb.j

Edit: After much searching and hunting (by my gf who expertly found the answer on the net) It looks like that's what Kombucha does! and that the white spots will join and then happy days!

  6. Bog: Aren't 'positive' and 'negative' just arbitrary definitions given to explain two different, but equally valid viewpoints - the 'negative' you're referring to is 'common' but not 'natural'. - Well, in my mind that's the way I look at it anyway. I've had this discussion with someone before - the only difference between negative and positive is which side of the fence you're currently standing on - and which side of the fence the masses are crowding around with the lynch rope.

Edit: This statement you made is a paradox "Are you supposed to just keep your mouth shut and let everyone have their view" - because if you're keeping your mouth shut, you're not allowing everyone to have their view, you're equally entitled to yours...

  7. A fish in my tank - Clown Loach - spent 2 months collecting large decorative rocks from the middle of the tank and piled them up at one corner. I could hear the click click clicking as the rocks were gently nudged around the tank at night.

After 2 months, all the decorative rocks had been moved - so I moved them back. 2 months later, the fish had diligently moved them again... I thought about this for a long time and then it dawned on me!

I started dropping the fish food into the other end of the tank - 3 months later, all the rocks were moved there.

The fish - a clever little clown loach, which is the only fish in the tank that can move rocks, build itself a 'food trap' to collect the food that falls in between the large rocks. At night it would sit at its pile of rocks, pick one up and move it out of the way - eat the trapped food, and place the rock back again.

To me that shows planning, environmental awareness, use of tools, and a plethora of other highly intelligent cognitive features - Have a think about that - a serious think about it - where did this fish learn this? There were no other fish in the tank that could have taught it to do this.

  8. I get 11:11's all the time... well, not all the time, but sometimes twice a day :)

Edit: I just remembered, I changed my phone once to be 24 hour time and I did get a lot of 22:22's so I figured its the time not the numbers ;)

  9. Lol - I figured they were probably the same, but I doubt they came from the same innards of the same pumpkin so here's hoping the cross is a whopper! Surely we can beat 56kgs?? That sounds mighty skimpy...

Actually, I'm hoping another property is ok too, I'm growing mine at my parents place, but they don't live there, so it'll be me tending the patch. I just don't have the space. Well I do have the space, but won't have the space for anything else if I grow the CHAMPION! (which is highly likely so you may as well all give up now... :P )

I'll be watering with a timer on a pump but there'll be no uncle bob doing the caring...

  10. Wild! Thanks - I've had it indoors over the winter, I probably should have mentioned that. In one of those $20 bunnings tents, with a light. Leaving it outside here I think it'd be dead already, it's been so damn cold!

So should I wait till it warms up a bit before re-potting it or do it tonight? I've killed a lot of plants re-potting them, so I've been holding off on doing that.

Edit: Thinking about it - most of the plants I've killed re-potting I grew from seed and probably re-potted too early, I think I can manage to re-pot this one without too much hassle and then in a month or so pop it in the ground. I'll cover it next winter and hopefully by then it can handle a bit of cold. Thanks.

  11. My Aya plant is not looking well...

Its gradually been getting worse and I'm really unsure what it to do about it. I would be rather upset to lose her so any advice you may have would be more than welcome!

Leaves are yellowing, veins remaining green, ends turning brown/necrotic - The plant itself is rather long and spindly...

I checked out this helpful guide: https://www.icmag.com/modules/Tutorials/PlantTrouble/Merged.htm EDIT: I only just noticed this is a weed growing site...

But I'm still not sure and I'm reluctant to try anything without advice because I have a tendency to over pamper my plants and kill them. I'm thinking maybe #4 or #6? I've only ever fed this plant Seasol and Charlie carp as fertiliser, occasionally I've used a tiny bit of Magnesium Sulphate in the water because I have some other plants that like that so I'm leaning against magnesium deficiency.

Could it be Potassium(K) deficiency combined with too much Nitrogen(N) and too small a pot?

  12. Quitting coffee??? Who would ever want to do such a thing!!! Lol... me actually, and I find it quite hard to quit coffee - so I doubt I'll be taking up a Kratom habit anytime soon - a little nibble maybe, but I'll save the hard core abuse for my current loved one... Dark Roast Arabica  I've only tried Kratom once, and probably didn't have enough... so that's a good enough excuse to try it again - Great thread OP.

  13. So... I'll lay my cards on the table and mention that the only pumpkin type thing I've grown so far was a spaghetti squash, and in my infinite wisdom I planted 4 plants all within 2ft of each other in my 2.4m x 1.2m garden box with 12 heirloom tomatoes... Needless to say - I got a lot of squash, but very few tomatoes

    My plan is this:

Get a rotary-ho and munch up a 3x3m square (although I hear triangular is the way to go with the main vine coming out opposite the first leaf?)

I have a bag of chicken poo that's been sitting on my front porch for 12 months - haha, it stunk so bad I didn't want to go near it to move it, but now I think it's well baked. I'm hoping this isn't too strong to be used, so I plan on shoving about 1/4 of the bag over that area - and about 1/4 of a bag of horse poo and rotary-ho that in.

I guess we'll see how that works, unless in the spirit of good competition anyone would care to share their plans for world domination?

  14. In the early 1900's The technology was invented to transmit power from anywhere on the earth to anywhere else on the earth, efficiently. The problem is two fold: It's hard to meter the power usage to make peopke pay for it, and there's nothing stopping someone from using as much as they want, to the detriment of others. There're enough waterfalls, geothermal energy, wave power, wind power etc to cover the worlds needs - The energy is generated at the site of a natural occurance, pumped into the earth and drawn out where it's required. No conspiracies, no mumbo jumbo, just facts, this is possible and has been possible for over 100 years - why isn't it happening? Because the patents for the inventions are in the hands of those that charge $ for electricity. The reason nuclear power is here is because they get a nice cheap source of power, and still charge you an arm and a leg for it. The devices that use electricity these days could be made much more efficiently too, which would cut down on the demand for electricity a bit. It's pretty easy to see who's best interest it is to make power hungry devices too.

I find it all very frustrating. I don't really know enough about nuclear power to make a comment about if it's good or not, but considering there are viable alternatives to both coal and nuclear power, it's a lose-lose argument.
