Is a 250 Watt Light Fine for Caapi and Viridis?

I made a mistake and put mine under a 400 HPS... death comes swiftly... I have a 220 watt 4xT5 compact fluro over the remaining 2 and it's too much. I killed 2 P. Viridis plants and 2 Caapi vines with the 400 watt, scorched 2 more of each with the 220 t5's at 30cm in a 2.5ft x 2.5ft x 2.5ft box. Now I have them on the windowsill inside that gets morning sun till 11:30 am in a coke bottle green house each and they're recovering... I'm a noob though so don't take this as gospel... Just giving you my experience so far... Good luck, I'd love to hear how you go - I noticed there's a thread 'learn from others mistakes' - I'm glued to it, highly recommended reading. Note: I have a 120mm silent PC fan in the box and it managed to keep the 400 watt hps down to 28 degrees the whole time! So it was the intensity of the light + lack of humidity I believe that did the scorching...

    Loph vs Grub

Grrr!!! That happened to by baby Lophs... I have the slug's babies in retrurn! Waiting for them to hatch, kinda funny, I'm quite fond of them now that they're growing inside their little eggs, you can actually see them in the blob... Sorry for your loss!

Haha - maybe some salt would be good... I think i'll let them hatch, then ditch them out the front when i lose interest in them. Funny... one minute I'm growing cacti, the next i'm a nurse maid for the enemies spawn...

@Evil - Thanks, I'll give that a go on the next few. I've seen people doing that on the bigger ones. Hopefully i've left enough room that the edges won't interfere. Can you graft onto the areoles sites? If I had a 1ft stock and a few 1cm LW's could I graft them around the sides? (...Indian dreams about the day his little LW's grow to 1cm+... ) (with bionic legs that might be quicker than expected...)

    mixed Trichocereus seedlings

They look great mate - How old are they? Also - what size pots/trays are they in? I haven't found a good tray/pot combo yet Did you buy your trays/pots online?

Yes... I've got them in a jar, it'll be interesting to see how long it takes them to hatch
  7. Great info bbgone, thanks. I've got half of my LW/Trich seedlings (3 months old) in a buninngs tent out the back to 'slow grow'. But the other half is in a 2ft x 2ft x 2ft sillver lined box, inside the house with a 4 x 55w T5 6500k light right at the top and a pc fan blowing in one corner. I put a 1lt container on the bottom (under where the fan blows) with strips of material in it that hang out over the edges of the container for humidity - I need to fill the cup every 2 days, so it seems to be evaporating nicely. I tried to find some 55w 2700k 2g11 tubes today and they're quite annoying to find... There appears to be 3 brands: Ge = Biax-L Osram = Dulux-L Philips = PL-L Sylvania = Lynx-L After reading all these posts, I'm going to try mixing in some red to keep things balanced. Any preferences? Do any of you have these lights? Goldtop: I know how you feel - I just lost a few to slugs!

OMG! My poor 3 month old L.W seedlings have been EATEN! No prizes for guessing there's a tripped out mother slug in my greenhouse!...
  10. Eriocereus Jusbertii - I don't suppose you'd have a seed or 2 spare for this one...? Flowering is a yes in my books and anything to help in that direction is a +++ @Goldtop - It felt quite alien taking a razor blade to a little cactus head! And they call it the 'Psycho0'! I think the name is better suited to the one weilding the razor!

@Jox - No worries. Here's the first 2 attempts - LW.Caespitosa / Pachanoi x Psycho0 is the first one. LW.Huizache / Pachanoi x Psycho0 is the second. They're so cute, it's hard to chop their little heads off...

Yep - Just hedging my bets, trying a bit of everything to see what works. So far watching the seedlings grow is fun but patient work, if i can give a few a little boost and get to see my first flowers I'll be stoked. I think I'll leave most on their roots for the long haul though. Anyone got a 20+ year old Loph grown on it's own roots? Pics?

Rippa! I read the grafting comp thread at work whilst working hard... Man thats some awesome work! I'll read the others and watch the flick. Here's my peres, which has been in this pot for 3 weeks, it hasn't seemed to change at all, it looked like that when i got it. And my fat little LW, which is pink...? The the LW's have been in a humidity tent outside under the verandah, but it does get some direct light in the arvo, so i'm figuring they're not liking so much light and have gone pink? I've also got these others - A mate had them and gave them to me, he said: "They're LW, I got them off a mate" but they were in a bag that was labelled 'Pachanoi' - So i have no idea which they are, and neither does he. At what stage can you tell? They do look greener and different than all my pach seedlings (which are all pink too), and the pach seedlings seem to have spikier heads... Is it too early to identify them?

Thanks Got - I'll check out that thread. I also have quite a few trichs grown from seed, some slightly bigger than others, but most smaller than a tic-tac. I wondered about doing the chop on those: seedling LW onto seedling trich... I'm keen as mustard to have a go - I think i'll find my healthiest looking peres and give it the chop tonight (and hope it has roots), might just try all 3 methods: LW on peres, LW on 'tip of little finger' size trich, LW on seedling trich. I have some extra LW seed to plant tonight too so if i bugger it up (more than likely) I'll have some more to play with soon, keep forgetting to do it! Working late tonight... tick tock tick tock...

Hehe - glad to know I'm not the only one... Yep, there's definately half a dozen that are ready to go. The peres isn't doing too well, I might have to check that out. Might try grafting onto the top of one of tripsis's little beauties though. Will let you know how I go, if they take I'll be so excited you won't be able to shut me up...

OMG! Well I know what I'll be doing all weekend!!! Thanks for the pics - very helpful. Nice loph myco! No idea about your original question though, as may be gleamed from the above, I'm a newb to cacti I did learn the hard way though, that peres spines are !@#$'ng ouch! Also, looking at your pics - I may have planted some of my peres upside down...

Oh really! So my LWs that I have already, that are just a little bit smaller than a tic-tac could be grafted now?! Some of them actually look like a fat grain of rice, but a little shorter - the largest I have would be about 5mm across... I was under the impression that they had to be about the same diameter as the peres? On another note - I bought some cacti from tripsis (thanks m8 they're awesome) that are about the size of my thumb, and have roots already and are doing well (Pach's - Psycho0's and all sorts) - if my LW's are 3-5mm - can i just whip the top of one of those and graft away?! (I'm containing my excitment, if i can do it now, I'm leaving work and heading straight for my garden!)

Looking at your pics - What are the blobs in between the scion and the peres? I haven't done a graft yet - I have some peres from cuttings that I'm waiting to take root - and some LW planted from seed that I'm waiting to be big enough to try. Looks like a little brown bead or blob on the first pic - especially noticable in the bottom right? Is that a 'scab' form the graft that happens when it 'takes'?
  22. It is a tricky one, men ususally read it one way, women read it the other - both ususally find it insulting till they see the other side: Woman without her man, is nothing (Without a man, a woman is nothing) Woman, without her, man is nothing (Without a woman, man is nothing)
