Digital Mozart - Music Producers Thread
ajna replied to Psylo's topic in Creativity, Spirituality & Philosophy
can i ask why u export the .wavs for mixing? audacity is the only cpu program i use for music, and i only use it occasionally to do fiddly editing jobs, but ioften find myself going back to the multitrack for final mixing. i like audacity's simpicity, but still i barey know how to use most of it's functions. would love to learn to use a program like Live, but a) i dont have a good enoguh computer to handle it and i'd need a very patient teacher my recording is done on a digital multitrack, which has served me quite well, but i have recently noticed some of the faders and knobs are making clicking noises that are making it into the recorded track and the battery power option isn't working which means no more portability. it's a real pain in the ass going between computer and the multitrack via SD card, hopefully one day i can get a decent cpu setup and do all the work that way. my instrument collection includes an old shitty acoustic, an old shitty ibanez electric, a friend's old shitty bass...a sitar, pipa, flute, didjeridoos, djembe, dan moi, singing bowls, korg monotribe, kaossilator, various noise making devices, and kids toys etc etc a lot of my song writing starts with acoustic guitar improv, but just as often from sound experiments and attempts at representing ideas/feelings i can't express verbally. maybe it's just because i can't write lyrics that i'm happy with, but i tend to prefer to make and listen to instrumental music and find lyrics often get in the way. although i seem to spend many hours working on tracks i still kind of like a roughness to the end product, i often leave mistakes in or restrict myself to a single take just to try and capture a bit of in-the-moment-ness... i had plans to have finished an EP by the end of the year, but as things are now i'm probably pushing it with a bit of luck, i could have 2 done next year. i'm very keen to have a more serious crack at making electronic/sample based music in the near future i also really miss playing in a band haha...that's all i can think of saying fro now -

lovely work -
really like it man! got a bit of a BoC vibe even, and to be honest until they release more music there's a huge gap for that kinda vibe in my life haha all sounds good to my ear production-wise btw, but i listen to and appreciate a lot of lofi music and non-slick electronica too. shouldn't excuse yourself for it i reckon, it gives human-ness too your music (or maybe that's just my excuse )

how should i send to ya? i was looking for your email, but maybe .wav would be too big? yeah i like all the filtering n whatnot going on, i think didj would blend nicely and contribute to that flowing feel -

i got a feeling this track is too good to add anything to really nice, my first feeling was to do a didjeridoo track for this but alas, my wee one sleeps, so no didj tonight at least i did jam to it with guitar a bit tho, i can send through some stuff shortly i suggest u heavy manipulate/loop/filter/cut up etc anything u like, so it doesn't get in the way of the awesomeness will msg ya -

wouldn't have guessed it started with a strat that does sound like a painstaking process! guitars and electronic beats seem so incompatible most of the time, there's no rock soul in the programmed, quantised feel of teh boomboom. it's doable, and some do it perfectly, but as u say blending the organic and synthetic is a challenge. got any percussion instruments around? even putting effects on pots, pans, bins, whatever can be interesting and at least has that human feel that might work better with guitar. i'd be keen to hear the stoner rock version, or any other tracks pre-reasoned for that matter

hmm it kinda sounds like i was saying band posters are the only good thing... i meant street art in general (incl. band posters and graffiti) is the only nice thing to look at in the city
-
that's a fucking cool poster man and i like the idea of using original / diy art to promote music music posters are like an part of street art - just about the only nice thing to look at in the city!

what do you use for writing your music? i have very similar conflictions when it comes to electronic music, between what i'd like to create and what i actually enjoy creating. i seem to have very little tolerance for doing much music work on the computer, anything complex becomes too tedious. but i love tinkering around with hands-on synths and whatnot. maybe a quality drum machine / sampler would suit, but then i kinda wonder if it's hard to get away from the 'built in' drum sounds anyway... having said that, i do like a lot of minimal electronica sounds too so just gotta embrace that having had a headphones listen now i'm more in tune with the journeying i dont mind the housey beats tbh, adds more to the goa-esque groove which is what i like most. but would def be interesting to hear some variations and see what works...but yeah, work on new stuff, come back to it when it gets some freshness back
-
nice, i like the progression, got a bit of a goa-vibe which i dig a little short to feel the full story/journey here but i totally understand the feeling of having to move on to something new (!!!!), plenty of potential for sure

very nice work brotha n sista -
cheers. yeah sealer should keep a safe barrier i think, or at least as good as the timber most houses are made from. if they are single-use pallets, cant imagine they'd spend money on treating them hey. the reason i asked was because i had thought of making planter boxes out of pallets/scavenged wood, but was a bit concerned about chems leaching into the soil and ending up in vegies.
-
really nice work mate! lovely stuff equally impressed by your natural finishing technique am i correct in assuming that pallets are not treated timber? it's one thing i'm a bit cautious of when scavenging wood...

thanks for listening and feedback guys haha that's prob true. the lack of "real instruments" in my recordings lately is mostly due to having a 1yo in the house - either he's makin noise or he's asleep and i can't new stuff is recorded late at night, zoning out with headphones while my munchkin sleeps. got a few guitar based ideas that i'm itching to get down though so hopefully soon... thanks heaps mate, really nice to hear that this music transports other minds too -

new sounds to share (psychedelic / electronica) this one goes out to all those who have been disemboweled by the mantises http://soundcloud.com/howlingcloud/mantis -
the sounds i refer to first come in at about 40sec mark i think. reminds me of sounds i hear in the psychedelic state or sometimes half-sleep state kinda like incomprehensible alien gibberish, but also a bit like insects and analogue synth sounds too...lol maybe it's the sound of neural activity, i dunno, fascinating though
-
great work man. i like that it kind sounds like left-field or undergound electronic music. i like electronic music that has some human-ness to it. clever composition, tells a good story, unique sounds and experimentation, intense! i particularly appreciate some of those psychedelic-gibberish sounds in the background of some parts oh and congrats, you are def coming close to finding 'it'
