  1. I would've buried it deeper. I have a feeling that cuttings will be more stable if they have a bit more depth in the soil. Perhaps they'd also form more roots and grow faster, due to having more surface in contact with the soil from which to grow roots. Then again, maybe not - I don't really know.

Trich roots and moisture - mythbusting time

I usually root trichs in totally bone dry soil - they seem to do just fine, but I don't know if they would do better if the soil was moist. Moisture risks rot, and I heard an argument that there's no point providing moisture to a plant with no roots. But this begs a question - can a root-less trich cutting still detect soil moisture and respond to it? If it can't, then it probably would make no difference if the soil was wet or dry. I'm very interested in this issue myself - hopefully some more knowledgeable people will come and share their wisdom!

    new members?

I met a guy about two weeks ago who was trying to join up. He seemed pretty keen, and was waiting for his membership to be validated. Sounds like he's probably still waiting.

    most expensive cactus ever ?

AKA "lava cactus": "As its name suggests, the lava cactus occurs exclusively on barren lava fields, lying at sea level. Not only is it one of the few plants that survive in this extremely dry, challenging habitat, it is often one of the first plants to colonise a fresh lava flow." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lava_cactus

    catha edulis seed give away

Pm'd, although it looks like more than 8 people have replied...
  9. EDIT - SOLD! Pictured above is a beautiful and healthy Cleistocactus Strausii that I'd like to sell (AKA "Silver Torch cactus"). Potted in clay pot and in quality cactus soil, 21 inches tall (53 cm). Relatively fast growing cactus that will clump vigorously at the base with time. A beautiful example of such a specimen can be found at the following link: http://mariscalcactu...ocactus_56.html I'm not really sure how much to ask for this, so feel free to make me an offer. Happy to send it through the mail (and it would be packaged with great care!). If I post it, I'll remove it from the pot and shake off all the soil.
  10. This cactus has now (finally!) sold. Someone outside of these forums gave me $20 for it.

    absurd dreams

Haha, that reminds me of a time when I woke up screaming. Only ever happened to me once in my life, and it was the night before I left to travel Vietnam for a month (i'd never been overseas and I was going without anyone i knew). I sat bolt upright and knocked over a glass of water whilst screaming at the top of my lungs. I woke from a dream, but could never remember anything about it. Weird...

    absurd dreams

Thanks for sharing your dreams with us - I've always been interested in dreams, and especially lucid dreaming! My first impression o your dream is that there might be elements of growth and change. Aliens are often thought of as superior, often frightening beings that come from above. It sounds like the coming of the aliens is associated with fear and resistance - the sky bursting into flames, you trying to hide etc. Then it seems like you steel yourself and choose to accept the inevitable. The change to a delivery truck may be an additional representation of the arrival of new things - after all, delivery trucks generally deliver things, right? All of this may indicate that there is some unmet need to grow and change in your subconscious - perhaps something repressed, or perhaps your life has just become a bit too routine, or perhaps there is something that you need to face up to within yourself (or someone else?). Then again though, maybe you just have a fear of aliens, and nothing more, or maybe your dream was simply the result of you receiving a package the day before and then watching Independence Day! I'm even less sure about the dialogue with your boyfriend, the cat, and the laptop cord. Perhaps you feel your boyfriend doesn't take the situation seriously? Perhaps this has some connection to your dad? I don't know. I think it would be very normal for anyone to be skeptical when someone tells them that the sky is on fire! Maybe your boyfriend's reaction in the dream is just you subconscious mind attempting to make the dream realistic, and nothing more. If any elements of your dreams are recurring, I'd pay coser attention to them. And what you really need to ask yourself, is what do your dreams and dream elements mean to YOU? Do you fear aliens? Or do you secretely wish that one would take you away to a more advanced civilization away form all the hairless apes on earth? An interpretation of your dream must take the answers to these questions into account, I believe.

Growing & propogation medium for lophs

They are both pretty different. I have little experience with lophs, but I know they can be prone to root rot. The few that I have seem to be growing in amongst little rocks with no organic matter at all. Bridgessi on the other hand is almost like a normal house plant. I grow mine in store-bought cactus mix, but they tolerate being left in the rain just fine, and I know of a very old plant growing and thriving in a hilly region that gets LOTS of rainfall in the winter. In other words, be careful with your lophs, but the bridgesii are pretty tough (mine are at least). Using unglazed clay pots is a good idea as they allow the soil to dry out quicker. Having said that though, all my bridgesii are in plastic. Good luck!

Ah, failed to notice that. Definite bargain - well done!

Could any body identify these fellas'?

Nice purchases! How much did you pay if I may ask?
  17. I have three beautiful T Bridgesii cuttings for sale. The two smaller ones are 39cm each and the longer one is 60cm. They are all $1 per cm. The newest growth on all of them (top 2 thirds on the smaller ones and top 1 third of the longer one) are pristine, with minor scarring lower down. I don't know what variety they are, but they grow extremely fast. They are the fastest growing cacti that I have (more so than any of the pachanoi or peruvianus varieties that I have) and also pup prodigiously. Almost all of the cuttings I have rooted (about a dozen) have produced at least 3 pups from the top within as many months and several have also produced basal pups. Postage is within Australia only and not to WA. Spines will be trimmed. Please PM if interested!

    FOR SALE: T Bridgesii cuttings

Wow that's one hell of a cactus patch! I wish my yard looked like that! My cuttings are not the sausage type unfortunately. Sorry to disappoint you Quill - I know how much you like the sausage! Finally, it appears that these cuttings are all sold (pending payment). I'll have more available throughout the next 6 months for those who missed out this time.

    Busted for porn

I don't think anyone should be ashamed of enjoying pornographic material just because they enjoy pornographic material. I think that for one thing, it depends on the nature of the porn. My biggest problem with internet porn is that some of it involves underaged persons, and persons who are forced into the sex industry against their will. I don't want to encourage these practices by entering sites that are involved in them, and the thought of getting sexual enjoyment from looking at people being raped and/or enslaved etc is sickening to me. The problem for me is that it seems very hard to tell which sites do these kinds of things, and I have no idea how widespread they are.
  20. I think there's probably a lot of people on here that take issue with the nature of our financial systems and the rife corruption that exists there, as well as in the worlds political systems. I often hear people discussing and lamenting these issues, but what really impresses me is when people actually DO something about them! Signing this petition is a chance to do something about these issues. It won't solve these problems, but it could make a small difference. More importantly, these sorts of campaigns build momentum and awareness, and can make more impactfull action more likely at a latter date. More signees makes it more likely that people (including the media) will take notice and take the time to learn more. So, if you're feeling heroic, please sign this petition! http://www.avaaz.org/en/the_world_vs_wall_st/?cl=1310164419&v=10614 There's also a bunch of rallies planned around the world in connection with this campaign. I'll be attending the one in my own city, and a google search would probably reveal where others are taking place if anyone's interested.

    Dandelion

This is from Wiki - not sure if you saw it already: Dandelions are so similar to catsears (Hypochaeris) that catsears are also known as "false dandelions". Both plants carry similar flowers, which form into windborne seeds. However, dandelion flowers are borne singly on unbranched, hairless and leafless, hollow stems, while catsear flowering stems are branched, solid and carry bracts. Both plants have a basal rosette of leaves and a central taproot. However, the leaves of dandelions are smooth or glabrous, whereas those of catsears are coarsely hairy. Other plants with superficially similar flowers include hawkweeds (Hieracium) and hawksbeards (Crepis). These are readily distinguished by branched flowering stems, which are usually hairy and bear leaves http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dandelion

Corruption in Financial and Political Systems

I agree, and I also think they should be electrocuted whenever they fail to answer direct questions. The fact that they get away with this so damn often is just not good enough.
  23. Whoah! Beautiful pics! I'm no photographer, but I think my favorites are rainbow, rocks, and sunset #1.

Corruption in Financial and Political Systems

No, I have no affiliation with any of those sorts of organizations (Avaaz, Greenpeace, GetUp! etc). Out of curiosity though, why do you describe GetUp! as a cult? Sounds like you have a low opinion of them... I occasionally post things like this because I care about the fact that human beings are rapidly destroying this beautiful planet, and I feel it is my duty to make an effort to do something about it. I would much rather not do this. Not only do I have much better things to do with my time, but it doesn't seem to do much for my popularity - people often seem to resent it. But despite this, someone has to do something, because the future looks very uncertain.
