What a bizarre fruit!  does the calyx fill up with water or serve any discernible purpose?

it fills up with a billion seeds!! maybe not a billion, but heaps... it should swell up and then change colour right before it cracks open to drop seeds

sorry the calyx... i watch them go real woody and brown as it ages so i reckon u could be right... ill cut 1 open an look...

That third fruit back with the flower remnants brings a dirty image to mind.  I do like that groovy calyx.  Theres a variety of convex and concave shapes too, and one of them is cupping its axial bud.
