my 2 bob's worth:

overheating will probably damage the ram or other parts

do the diagnostics as above post/s say

and diagnostic devices on ebay for laptops are only $5 to 20

this $5 is a good all rounder

re-install windows, if it will boot to cd

chq the fan/heatsink is clear, (google brand/model name how to if not sure)

good usb laptop cooler's with 2 fans on ebay for $5 for next laptop

i sit it on a lap table, you know those tables with a bean bag bottom to sit on your lap to eat dinner in front of tv

best option to save time not $: when it overheated it probably hung and couldnt slow down cpu/hd etc so gets really hot and ram cant handle it get a better laptop on ebay for $300 or so and dont let it hang for too long as they get really hot then, ram is $50 BUT other damaged parts may arrise mb

i bet its trying to work out what happened to its memory when turned on, leave it on for 15 to 20 mins it should show a ram error
