endorfinder Posted January 21, 2013 My dear mother claims this tree is an acacia and grows like a pest around these parts (northern Queensland). The species' she thought it might have been have turned out to be incorrect though, can anyone provide an ID? many thanks! -ef
0 IndianDreaming Posted January 21, 2013 (edited) Hmm.. It's so diifficult to tell by those pictures... Can you get more photos? I'm no expert - but I think even the experts would have trouble with this one - Acacias being so similar to each other makes it hard to identify them... Maybe photos of the bark and flowers too? 0 Stillman Posted January 21, 2013 Common name Golden shower tree?
0 endorfinder Posted January 21, 2013 Part of me *does* hope it's a golden shower tree, there are a bunch in the wetlands behind me here, which makes me giggle. ;) What more useful pics can I take while it's still daylight? My hopes that this is an acacia are kinda slim at this point :/
0 IndianDreaming Posted January 21, 2013 Flowers, seeds, bark, where the leaf joins the stem, real close up ones are better...

0 psyspasm Posted January 21, 2013 yeah ive always found acacia seeds to be pretty much a giveaway... that its an acacia anyway, not necessarily the variety
0 Stillman Posted January 21, 2013 you can see the black bean like pods in the second photo
0 endorfinder Posted January 21, 2013 Yes I think the pods are the giveaway. I'm not going to bother trying to ID this one any further, although I'll toss in another ID in a second while you guys are around :D I'll feel better when i take the chainsaw to this one now.... 0 IndianDreaming Posted January 21, 2013 I'm just poking fun Endor - If you use g00gle images to ID plants, you'll find it a bit easier to rule some out: https://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=acacia&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.41248874,d.dGI&biw=1920&bih=1031&wrapid=tlif135874896088410&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=PN78UKSKOoiiiAfu-YD4CQ
0 endorfinder Posted January 21, 2013 Any idea on this guy? I long presumed it was an acacia but that was before I cared about plants @IndianDreaming heh I knew it was a long shot on this one after poking around google, but my dear mother has been insistant that it's an acacia for 20 years so I had to give her the benefit of the doubt ! 0 endorfinder Posted January 21, 2013 @IndianDreaming have you tried the Leafsnap smartphone app? I've played around a little but the database is obviously quite americo-centric.
0 IndianDreaming Posted January 21, 2013 Looks like an interesting app... Kinda like Shazaam for plants?
0 endorfinder Posted January 21, 2013 IndianDreaming - so it seems, I just downloaded it this afternoon. It's based on similar technologies to human biometrics, makes great sense. Getting a decent pic from an iphone on a white background isn't the easiest though... I'll have a macro lens soon which should help. What would be interesting would be to contact the developers in the US and see if they'd be interesting in expanding their database with the help of a bunch of aussie plant freaks with smartphones :D
