the mouth is very sensitive...I find if you stick your finger etc in your mouth, your tongue can usually sense the smallest of spines...& then the teeth can easily grasp them (not much use if your hands are covered in soil...)

might of got some soil in with the spine....although I've noticed some cacti spines are more prone to swelling that others, I haven't had any issues with the trichs...but 1 particular nasty opuntia always causes a little swelling ...no idea why.

A little off topic maybe, I think a lot of cacti's natural habitat is in dry forest & shrub land. Often when you see them in their natural habitat the trees have long since been harvested/cleared, the land grazed & the cacti left because they had little value. I recently saw an environmental vid on the fruit harvesting of Mexican Stenocereus. Although there are a lot of plantations now, the wild sten's are still harvested by clearing out the trees....its cause major environmental damage. I read that the saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) were once surrounded by trees ....cut down for fence post long ago. So I guess they (cacti) had a lot more protection from the sun in the past & may account for the tall columnar forms, popping out in the tree tops...........

Yeah really worth doing...for the sweet fruits or the seed or both. Everyone has their own way...mostly using silica gel. I use salt....its more handy. I get a clean jam jar....fill 1/3 with salt...put in 350c oven for 30mins....allow to cool with lid just sitting (not fasten) on top of jar....(This process dries out the salt)...then I use imitation luncheon paper ...forming in into a cup & inserting it in the jar (stops the salt from coming out etc..) Tape paper to top of jar (sealing it)...still need to be able to screw lid on...I get 3 cotton buds tape them together at 1 end ....stick into paper cupped jar after rubbing them through the pollen ...seal jar with lid..buds inside it...put in fridge till needed or freezer if you want it for next season...

Have you got any other cereus or trich buds about to open? or some pollen for your cereus?....they will be coaxed into accepting trich pollen with a light dust of cement..........

I doubt there was little difference of intelligence between Neanderthal & Sapian.......Possible variations in different abilities due to greater cellular mass of different brain areas.
