somnif Posted January 7, 2003 Here is a pictures of one of my Tricho's (at least I assume it is a tricho?) taken yesterday (not flower) and this evening (flower)...can anyone help identify it? Top View Before... ...and After Side View Before... ...and After Here is one of my San Pedro's on its way to flower...it is taking oh so long...(as are the other three which are going to flower) I am predicting early to mid February for anyone wanting to do some pollen exchanging. Did anyone else boycott the typical xmas tree in favour of a xmas Cacti? We has this out the front of our house lit up for a couple of weeks and no-one stole it - is this a sign of good will or is it just that the local youths haven't evolved past heroin use yet? You can see my Terscheckii X. on the right which flowers amazingly twice each year, a couple of San Pedros (the tallest of which is due to flower in a few weeks) and a smaller prickly Tricho whose name defeats me at the moment. Guest Mesqualero Posted January 7, 2003 Very nice pics somnif My guess is that the top one is some kind of Echinopsis
M S Smith Posted January 7, 2003 I would say the top photo is of Echinopsis subdenudata due to the lack of spines, but this plant has too few ribs to be that plant. Definitely an Echinopsis though. Michael
somnif Posted January 8, 2003 Ah, good thing I didn't try to eat it then ;-) The only thing I am sure about this cactus is that is was purchased from Collectors Corner at Garden World - I shall go back and see what they label similar beasts (err, that probably isn't the right word) Anyway, this is the problem with cacti, you start with this ambition of eating them and then you find you just *like* them too much too bring yourself to do it. I was just going to mention that my attempt with pollenation with some Terscheckii X. pollen was probably pointless until I came across this: http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocereus_scopulicolus_webpage/Trichonopsis_photos/index.h tm://http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocere...tos/index.h tm://http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocere...tos/index.h tm://http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocere...tos/index.h tm://http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocere...tos/index.h tm://http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocere...tos/index.h tm://http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocere...tos/index.h tm://http://trout.yage.net/sc/Trichocere...tos/index.h tm (ah Snu, wonder how the book is going - we can assume well I guess considering how quiet he has been across the boards ;-) [though I did note a recent post to EA so he is probably still alive] ) Anyway, considering what a prolific flowerer both parents are, any offspring should be amazing. BTW, recent hot days has cause my Perdo flower day estimation to be moved earlier to late January. Guest reville Posted January 9, 2003 My scop is starting to flower - maybe we can do a pachanoiXscopolicolus Ill post nearer to the flowering- the bud is taking ages to do anything. how do you get your pedros to flower? mine never do
somnif Posted January 9, 2003 Neglect mostly ;-) The only thing I do to them besides watering now and then during the hot months and re-potting when needed is to throw a bit of lime at the pots in spring - the lime thing I started last year and I got my first pachanoi flowers last year. It is probably mostly an age thing though. I'd love to do a cross! Re: pollen, Torsten mentioned drying the pollen (using filter paper over the end of a vacuum) and then freezing as a good method of shortish term storage. Current estimated time of flowering is somewhere around the 23rd assuming a burst of hot weather.
somnif Posted January 11, 2003 Looks like I may well be sending pollen to you, Rev (and anyone else who'd like some - just email me with your postal address) Less than a week to go I'd guess (once these buds start their growth spurt there is no stopping 'em): An here is a close-up: [This message has been edited by somnif (edited 11 January 2003).]
somnif Posted January 17, 2003 Ah, my s'pedro flowered this morning Here is a picture: And here is another with a bud which is just about to also bloom: Email me if anyone wants some pollen (I've already contacted Rev & spiraleyes.) Regarding my attempt at pollenating the Echinopsis sp., I am not sure if I have been successful as I don't know exactly what I am looking for; the flowers broke off after a week or so and I was left with the following: Success or failure, could someone please tell? (I suspect failure)
