Inyan Posted March 13, 2018 If you guys see anything you like, let me know and I might add them to the grafting competition pay outs for the winners... provided we actually get some participants. Tiny knick knacks now, but the weather is warming up and these little guys will take off as soon as that happens. Making trays for grafting Planting them up. And so it begins..with the selection of a seedlingto graft. This one is Serra Blue x OST 9064. SS02 x Serra Canyon followed by Icaro x Huarazensis .
DualWieldRake Posted March 13, 2018 Great focusing job on one of the grafts I need to know now what are those green beads? I've seen them in Gimli's pots too

As Gimli noted, slow release fertilizer... the soil I chose today is supposed to slowly fertilize for 9 months. I tossed in some additional fertilizer as I like to make my cacti jump. I generally add more amendments than this, but time was precious today. Edited March 13, 2018 by Inyan Respond to Gimli
Inyan Posted March 16, 2018 Some more hopeful grafts. As you can see, the cold killed one of my variegates here, just a little bit of tissue still holding on from the center so hopefully this little Pallarensis hybrid will start jumping in its place. Another newly grafted specimen... I just had to get some Yowie genetics started so here is a little Yowie hybrid I have hopes for as well.
Gimli Posted March 17, 2018 A graft I did tonight. Tersch x Peru. Used a little leaf glue and stuck it in my makeshift humidity box. Trying things. Learning the hard way.

DualWieldRake Posted March 17, 2018 Thought maybe there was a special type of glue for leaves Your graft looks good, snug placement. Looks a bit like one of my first grafts and it turned out to be a winner

Looks a bit like one of my first grafts and it turned out to be a winner Did one a few weeks ago, seedling was "I" size approx according to this photo. Seems to have taken as it's quite firm but stalled? Been told it's quite common for it to stall. My 2 lophs on the other hand already have 10 pups between them in the same time period!
DualWieldRake Posted March 17, 2018 Pachanoi often stalls for me. With one i waited maybe 6 months before it finally started, others i just rerooted. Haven't had a single bridge stall yet, and lophs only temporarily stall for me...

Inyan Posted March 18, 2018 (edited) 4 hours ago, Mapacho said: Dude teach me your ways...any tips for areole grafting? Tip #1. Don't let your areoles dry out at any time. A glass of water can help with this as you cut... you will find many areoles wanting to dry out otherwise. Tip # 2. Don't let your areoles dry out at any time. Parafilm increases the humidity of your graft union on a permanent basis so long as there are no holes or cracks. Tip # 3. Don't let your areoles dry out at any time. If you suspect that your parafilm grafting technique is not perfect, place your graft in a humidity chamber of some sort. Tip # 4. Make sure the union is secure without any air spaces. One can do this via string if one is gentle prior to the application of parafilm. Gently wrapping the ends of the graft with the string and working ones way towards the center so as to enable yourself to see the gap closing if there is one. Covering the string with a layer of waxy can then help seal in the moisture and keep your scion from drying out. You can also use thin strips of co-ban or parafilm for this if need be. One can often secure the scion by making a cross over your scion with two thin strips of parafilm prior to your application of your larger parafilm strip that should be stretched out to cover the entire surface of your graft. Tip # 5. You may wish to make a small wedge cut into your stock. You can then shape your scion to fit in this wedge. The smaller tissues of your scion are then protected by the stocks tissues. Please refer back to earlier steps however as steps 1-3 are particularly important with this method. Edited March 18, 2018 by Inyan
Mapacho Posted March 19, 2018 Thanks very much! Any tip on perceiving the vascular bundle behind the areole? How hard is it to line that up? Also infection control? What do you do?

Inyan Posted March 19, 2018 I know I got side tracked for a bit, but back to grafts I've made today. First we have the potential scion to choose. Next we have to implant said scion into our Pereskiopsis. Noticed I still have some areoles left so I found another donor removed areole and replaced areole. Not quite done yet, but still having fun nonetheless.

Cross fingers 3days old on the graft. Validus x ss02xss01 Getting some practice in, feeling more confident now. Ordered some cheap Chinese film wrap, i did another bigger one with some glad wrap and it seems good so can't wait to try some side grafts ;)
