Optimystic Posted January 29, 2013 (edited) I thought I would share some pics of my new buddy! A FoaFm was able to get it shipped here from a month long trip... he's supposed to be sending me some really cool pics of some eagles and stuffs so I'll post them when I get them if anyone is interested... but meanwhile here is some of the latest cactus pornCollection site: A plant shop in Puente Atocongo Perú near Lima, like a block away from the bridge right next to the mall laff I know thats not what constitutes a collection site, but that's meh story and i'm sticken to it.... A really nice rich green color... Big fuzzy aeroles.. They were grey until they got wet... Like a really cool grey but oh well, brown is cool too unfortunately they cut the spines off..... *** These first 2 pics maybe a little distorted in color due to the flash But they already had it rooting in a pot! A nice lady gave it to my cousin when he asked about San Pedro... They had to look around a bit, had this one and a larger one and just gifted it to him! :DHe was so excited to tell me he had gotten a plant for me... I asked him to look for ripe fruits as part of his trip included a 16 hour bus ride to ayacucho he didn't make it out to the jungle areas but he got some pics while driving.... (Plus its just not the season for ripened fruits down in SA)I was under the impression she cut it off in front of him and just stuck it in a pot! lol but nope it was already gift potted and she just straight up gave it to him! I hope he told me the truth anyhow, but he's a really good kid so I believe him. she said it will grow about 8 feet tall with a huge white flower! Im gonna need alot of patience Was looking dehydrated and so I gave him a bath... I say He cause I usually call Peruvianuses He but I haven't ruled anything out yet.... but I think they will be long pretty spines to match the peruvianus like aereols... the water beaded up like crazy... and within about an hour or so... it was nearly all gone! This guy is ready to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *without flash on the left shows the true color better which is fairly dark green So probably easy to guess one thing I will be doing tomorrow! Shit I hate sifting perlite lol the labor of love eh ;) Im stuck with perlite til I can afford better but no worries I don't breathe that shyte Edited January 29, 2013 by Spine Collector

Optimystic Posted January 29, 2013 (edited) @ GOT, I get big ass bags of perlite like 4 cubic feet, approx 113 litres.. its way cheaper but unfortunately it comes with that dangerous fine powder which is no good.. IME its alot more like Diatomaceus earth when its in fine poweder form... and plus it has a big ass warning that says "don't breathe or it can fuck you up for life" lol Most of the commercial brands in smaller bags are washed real good but I don't know how they wash it I can't get that to work right.. but im seriously done with perlite after this round... just using it for stuff im eventually gonna repot... Me neither CBL! Edited January 29, 2013 by Spine Collector

Me neither CBL! I buy it in big bags as well but I never run it through a sieve as doing that it will produce more dust. I just add it to the mix straight out of the bag. Once it is in the mix the dust isn't a problem any more as the dampness of the mix suppresses the dust. All of my Trich's are in potting mix with added perlite which I will continue to use as there is nothing available here that will do as good a job at the same sort of price. People always talk about perlite floating to the top of mixes but I have never noticed a lack of perlite in my mixes when I re-pot. I think what you see in the top of the pots is just the loose perlite on the surface which can be a bit of a pain when it blows around in the wind but other wise its good stuff. theuserformallyknownasd00d Posted January 29, 2013 I've personally experienced what SC has said about perlite. I buy in bulk also and my tek it to always wear a suitable mask and spray it down with a pump action weed sprayer ASAP. Once its out and moist, and the fan has blown the dust away, masks off and all is safe... D00d
Optimystic Posted January 29, 2013 I really need to figure a way to wash it but each time I try there is so much dust that it just clumps altogether but it maybe container issue or something... When I get into mine theres so much dust, just getting a scoop, that I have to take the entire bag outside to work with it.. and frankly im at the end of my stick... Its my 2nd large bag and my last period. I get most everything through amazon and ebay cause there is nothing commercially that is superior to what I can mix together with some fresh earth plus amazon and ebay... however I do have a huge pile of compost to work with every year... I was nervous to use it with cacti but I don't think I would be as nervous without the problems a I've been having... again, I have found better bags of perlite but only the smaller much more expensive ones and if I was going that route in price then I may as well go with zeolite or even some mineral rock that breaks down slowly and feeds.... I would have topped my pots with pebbles at first if I had thought of it, but by the time I saw it mentioned to someone else, I was already sick of the perlite lolIf I were to get all my supplies from around here, all my plants would be in little pots lol Anyway, my plant says "Trivial" lol... use what makes your heart sing, but by all means, DO NOT BREATHE THE DUST
