Scenario Art: A New Futures Method that Uses Art to Support Decision-Making for Sustainable Development

This paper introduces a new futures method, Scenario Art, which involves the use of visual

representations of future scenarios to support decision-making towards sustainable development.

Based on preliminary investigations it is proposed that Scenario Art has the capacity to increase a

person’s level of empathy, creativity and responsiveness to risk; and on this basis has great potential

to facilitate decision-making processes and outcomes that demonstrate sustainable thinking. To

illustrate the application and support the proposed value of Scenario Art an overview of a recent

futures workshop, which applied the new method, is provided. This paper aims to inspire the further

development and utilisation of Scenario Art.
