Fruit Wines (only some from native plants)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, as further research, here's a list I made of Fruit Wines, so I could then find out which places were using *native fruits in their fruit wines

(not that many as it turns out, nearly all in Queensland, apart from one place in Victoria and one in SA)

And yes, I have banana's as a native fruit (well its originally from New Guinea before it spread around the tropics if anybody wants to argue the point)

great list. i'd like to try out some of the elderberry wines to see how they stack up against the batch i made this summer. i'd also like to try most of the others as well, for educational purposes. also coming soon to a wine list near you should be the cold climate fruit currently being marketed as tazziberry, it's already being used in icecreams and i'm guessing when production allows will find its way into winemaking.

Did you know you can also make elderflower wine (or "champagne")?

It's a very laborious process though, as the green bracts (or sepals?) must be removed by hand from each 3mm diameter flower or the resulting wine will be truly nasty. It's good if done properly though.

Not that I'd condone cultivating the stuff. It's very weedy- my folks have been trying to eradicate it from their property for years now (along with Hemia salicifolia escapees...).

Hi Tryptameanie,

Aha, you would be talking about this

there is a native elderberry, the white elderberry, Sambucus gaudichaudiana

http://www.utas.edu.au/dicotkey/DicotKey/O...S/gSambucus.htm

perhaps we should be encouraging that?

Thats Great!!

I have been playing around with fruit wines, and in an overcrouded gape wine market, something different is needed?

Only problem in fruit wines have a limited shelf life due to the delicate fresh flavours that make them so appealing, with ittle ageing potential
