Solvent purity

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

after doing a number of extractions that im less than happy with i've decided to try and get my hands on some top quality solvents.

Now i've been checking out batco.com.au and come up with a few q's

The solvents come in grades like extra pure, reagent grade, technical grade and with other names like 'dried analaR' as well as chromatography and spectroscoopy types.

Now we would want the most pure grade but which is it? Or which grade is suited for basic extractions etc. ?

Cheers

Usually reagent grade is good enough.

However, read the label for impurities and other additives before you buy.

A good way to test the purity of solvents on hand is to evaporate a little off in a glass petri dish and see if any residue remains. If no residue remains, the solvent is clean.
