WarpedAstro Posted August 23, 2002 Hey guys, I was given some female Hops root cuttings, and I put the cuttings in the soil, and they have started to pop up in the pot, and I was wondering if anyone knows about growing Hops? do they like grow in sunny or shadey spot? can you grow hops from pots? does Hops need a lot of rooting space? Any advice soon would be great..... cheers WA

The short answer is a bit of both, yes, and preferably yes They are native to northern Europe and ideally prefer cool (by Oz standards) summers and long days. So don't let them get sun scorched. Most Australian hops are grown in Tassie. They come up from the roots every spring like a grapevine, but typically die right off after harvest. The roots can handle being buried in snow over winter. They need something to climb on. If you put them in the ground, they will attempt to spread via suckers. The root stock is pretty hardy and can handle being chopped up quite a bit.
